For whatever man he is that has a blemish, he shall not draw near: a blind man, or a lame, or he who has a flat nose, or any deformity,

or a man who has an injured foot, or an injured hand,

or hunchbacked, or a dwarf, or one who has a defect in his eye, or an itching disease, or scabs, or who has damaged testicles;

no man of the seed of Aaron the priest who has a blemish, shall come near to offer the offerings of Yahweh made by fire. Since he has a blemish, he shall not come near to offer the bread of his God.

If anyone injures his neighbor; as he has done, so shall it be done to him:

fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; as he has injured someone, so shall it be done to him.

The king answered the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if you don't make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.

The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man on the earth who can show the king's matter, because no king, lord, or ruler, has asked such a thing of any magician, or enchanter, or Chaldean.

Daniel answered, Blessed be the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.

The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whoever shall read this writing, and show me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Jeunes gens. Cette expression ne permet pas de préciser leur âge : nous savons seulement que chez les Perses on commençait à quatorze ans l'éducation des enfants nobles, pour les mettre en état de comparaître devant le roi à dix-sept ans.
La littérature et la langue des Chaldéens. Ces expressions ne désignent pas, comme on pourrait le croire, la langue et l'écriture en usage à Babylone au temps de Nébucadnetsar. Le chaldéen de cette époque ressemblait trop à l'hébreu pour que des jeunes gens intelligents eussent besoin de trois ans pour l'apprendre. Il s'agit d'une langue et d'une littérature plus anciennes, hors d'usage à cette époque, et dont la clef était conservée par la caste sacrée des mages, appelée les Chaldéens (voyez 2.2 note). Il paraît prouvé actuellement que ces mages étaient descendants ou au moins héritiers des traditions d'une population très ancienne, probablement de race touranienne. Ces Chaldéens primitifs occupaient le pays situé à l'embouchure de l'Euphrate et du Tigre antérieurement aux Babyloniens ou Chaldéens postérieurs, de race sémito-couschite, venus du nord. C'est dans cette langue des Chaldéens primitifs, l'accadien, qu'étaient écrits les livres sacrés où étaient consignées les formules magiques, les règles pour l'interprétation des songes, les observations d'astronomie et de physique, etc., et ils formaient une littérature très considérable dont de nombreux débris ont été retrouvés de nos jours, recueillis et déchiffrés.
