L'intimité des relations de la famille est rappelée de la manière la plus expressive, pour montrer à quel point tous les attraits de l'attachement personnel doivent être immédiatement foulés aux pieds en pareil cas (Luc 14.26).

L'expression : de ta mère, provient sans doute de ce que chez les peuples où règne la polygamie, la relation entre enfants de la même mère est beaucoup plus étroite que celle avec les frères et sœurs de père seulement (Lévitique 19.3, note).

Secrètement, en opposition à la sollicitation du prophète qui avait un caractère public.

Que toi ni tes pères n'avez connus. Le nouveau culte se présente avec tout l'attrait de la nouveauté.

Nous voyons dans ce texte comment Satan utilise nos proches, pour nous inciter à commettre le mal : ceux que nous aimons sont en effet les derniers que nous devrions suspecter à ce sujet. La conduite que les enfants d'Israël pourraient avoir, semble ici dictée par un de leurs frères ou de leurs enfants, ceux-ci étant par nature au sein de la famille. Cette déviation idolâtre pouvait également venir d'une épouse ou d'un ami, ces personnes étant également proches, suite à un choix préalable.

Il va de notre devoir de préférer Dieu et la piété plutôt que les meilleurs amis que nous pourrions avoir ici-bas. Nous ne devons pas, pour plaire à ces derniers, transgresser la loi divine. L'Éternel ordonne de ne pas marcher dans la voie des pécheurs, de ne pas rechercher leur compagnie ni d'essayer de gagner leur affection : « Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent te séduire, ne te laisse pas gagner », Proverbes 1:10.

Veillons donc à ne pas entraver les plans de la justice Divine !
