1 à 9 Règles sur le service militaire en général.

Premier ordre : ne s'effrayer de rien, ni de la qualité de l'armée ennemie : chevaux et chariots, que ne possédaient pas les Israélites ; ni du nombre (infanterie plus nombreuse). Pour l'emploi de la cavalerie et des chariots chez les ennemis, voir Exode 14.7,10 (Egyptiens) ; Josué 17.16 ; Juges 4.3 (Cananéens et Philistins) ; 2Samuel 8.4 ; 1Chroniques 18. 4 (Syriens).

Quand Israël engageait une guerre selon la volonté divine, il pouvait espérer l'assistance toute particulière de l'Éternel. Ce dernier était en fait leur seul appui. En tant que chrétiens, nous sommes, en quelque sorte, également en guerre. Ceux qui ne voulaient pas combattre devaient être renvoyés chez eux. De tels sentiments ne pouvaient provenir que de personnes n'étant pas de tout cœur avec Israël. Dieu ne voudrait pas être honoré par quelqu'un qui serait « forcé » d'être à Son service. Les enfants d'Israël devaient être volontaires, Psaume 110:3.

Dans le combat que nous menons pour Christ, par la foi, nous devons veiller à écarter tout ce qui pourrait nous en dissuader. Celui qui va combattre à contrecœur ferait mieux de renoncer à la guerre. Ne cherchons pas à nous échapper, comme certains, mais ne soyons pas effrayés par le bon combat, Esa 8:12.
