Deutéronome 29.1

These are the words of the covenant which Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.
וַיִּקְרָ֥א מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֑ם אַתֶּ֣ם רְאִיתֶ֗ם אֵ֣ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁר֩ עָשָׂ֨ה יְהוָ֤ה לְעֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם לְפַרְעֹ֥ה וּלְכָל־עֲבָדָ֖יו וּלְכָל־אַרְצֽוֹ׃

1 à 9 Bienfaits de l'Eternel.

Dans le texte hébreu ce verset est le dernier du chapitre 28. Les commentateurs juifs y voient la conclusion de tout le Deutéronome proprement dit (Ce sont là les paroles) ; comparez Lévitique 26.46. Mais les chapitres 29 et 30 deviennent par là un appendice non motivé. C'est à nos yeux l'introduction du discours qui va suivre.

Outre l'alliance. Le peuple nouveau devait accomplir par devers lui un acte équivalent à celui de ses pères à Sinaï.

Les bénédictions reçues jusqu'alors, comme celles du temps présent, devraient nous inciter à obéir à Dieu. Une oreille capable d'entendre, un œil qui voit et un cœur rempli de compassion, sont de véritables dons du ciel. Tout cela vient de Dieu !

Il ne nous donne pas seulement la nourriture et le vêtement, mais aussi la santé et de grands biens : nos remerciements sont peu de chose, en regard de ce qu'Il nous offre ! Beaucoup de personnes aiment recevoir, mais n'ont aucun esprit de reconnaissance envers Celui qui offre ; ils ne font d'ailleurs pas toujours bon usage de ce qu'ils reçoivent !

Nous devons, à titre de gratitude, dans notre intérêt, garder les promesses divines dans notre cœur : c'est en fait un devoir allant de pair avec notre fidélité.
