1 à 7 Sous une forme sentencieuse, l'auteur donne des règles de conduite relatives au culte, à la prière et aux vœux.

Culte

Prends garde à tes pieds. Comparez Proverbes 4.26. N'entre dans le temple qu'avec recueillement (Esaïe 1.12), en sorte que ton cœur prenne part aux actes que tu vas y accomplir.

Pour écouter. On peut entendre ce mot de l'attention à la voix intérieure de Dieu ; mais il s'agit plutôt de la lecture de la Loi et des Prophètes, et des interprétations qu'on en donnait (Néhémie 8.3, note).

Vaut mieux que d'offrir le sacrifice des insensés, littéralement : Plutôt que de ce que les insensés donnent un sacrifice, c'est-à-dire que de ce qu'il y ait parmi vous des insensés qui offrent un sacrifice et qui s'imaginent donner quelque chose à Dieu, en dépit de Psaumes 50.10-12.

Qui ne savent pas le mal qu'ils font. Ils ne réfléchissent pas et s'imaginent que l'acte extérieur suffit, tombant ainsi, à leur insu, dans une complète méconnaissance du droit de Dieu et dans une piété formaliste qui les tranquillise mal à propos et favorise en eux le péché.

Ecclésiaste 5:1-3 Adresse-ton adoration à Dieu, et prend le temps de la préparer. Ne laisse pas tes pensées se disperser vers le côté matériel. Retiens tes sentiments pour qu'ils ne s'égarent pas vers des sujets inopportuns.

Dans nos prières, nous devons éviter les vaines répétitions ; ce ne sont pas les prières interminables qui sont condamnées dans ce texte, mais celles qui n'ont aucun sens réel. Il est fréquent que l'égarement de nos pensées rende nos louanges au Seigneur à peine meilleures que le sacrifice des insensés ! De nombreuses paroles prononcées à la hâte dans la prière, révèlent une certaine tiédeur du cœur ; elles n’engendrent que des réponses assez ternes de la part du Seigneur, puisqu’elles ne sont animées d’aucune ferveur d’âme.
