אַל־תֹּאמַר֙ מֶ֣ה הָיָ֔ה שֶׁ֤הַיָּמִים֙ הָרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים הָי֥וּ טוֹבִ֖ים מֵאֵ֑לֶּה כִּ֛י לֹ֥א מֵחָכְמָ֖ה שָׁאַ֥לְתָּ עַל־זֶֽה׃
Ne nous demandons pas pourquoi le passé a été meilleur que le présent ; il n’est pas sage de se poser cette question.
Ne dis pas : Comment se fait-il que les jours précédents ont été meilleurs que ceux-ci ? car ce n'est pas par sagesse que tu t'enquiers de cela.

Il ne faut pas que les difficultés du temps où nous vivons nous portent à vanter celui où nous ne vivons plus encore (Jude 1.16). Chaque époque a ses lumières et ses ombres. Acceptons sans murmurer les circonstances dans lesquelles Dieu nous place : il a en vue notre développement moral. C'est dans les jours où Dieu nous a appelés à vivre que nous attend de sa part notre tâche. Le blâme que le verset 3 a prononcé sur le rire ne justifie aucunement l'humeur sombre et l'esprit de critique.
C'est nous, dit saint Jérôme, qui faisons le bon on le mauvais siècle, selon que nous sommes vertueux ou vicieux.
Et Horace signale l'humeur querelleuse et difficile de ceux qui sont toujours à louer le temps qui n'est plus.

Car ce n'est point par sagesse que tu demandes cela. Il faudrait commencer par prouver que le temps passé valait réellement mieux que le temps actuel, avant de rechercher les causes de ce phénomène. Puis, s'il y a beaucoup de questions qui sont inspirées par un esprit de sagesse, celle-ci n'est pas du nombre. Elle a une tout autre cause !
