Comparer Colossiens 1.14. Après avoir cherché dans le conseil éternel de la miséricorde de Dieu la cause de la grâce (Ephésiens 1.4,5) et indiqué son effet et son but, (Ephésiens 1.6) l'apôtre nous apprend ici, en paroles fort claires, quel en a été le moyen efficace : le sang de Christ, c'est-à-dire sa mort expiatoire, son sacrifice.

Par ce sacrifice nous avons la rédemption, le rachat ; il a été la rançon de nos âmes. (Matthieu 20.28 ; Romains 3.24 ; 1Corinthiens 6.20 ; Galates 3.13 ; 1Timothée 2.6 ; Hébreux 9.12 ; 1Pierre 2.24) Il a accompli et réalisé ce que tous les sacrifices de l'ancienne alliance ne faisaient que préfigurer. (Comparer Romains 3.24, note.)

La rémission des péchés (Grec : "offenses, chutes,") est le premier fruit de la rédemption par le sang de Christ, appropriée personnellement à l'homme pécheur. Elle lui procure la réconciliation avec Dieu, la paix ; elle lui rend l'accès à toute la richesse de la grâce divine.

Cette rémission des péchés, accordée à celui qui se repent et qui croit en Jésus-Christ, doit se renouveler sans cesse dans le cours de la vie chrétienne, pour que les offenses involontaires de l'enfant de Dieu ne troublent pas sa communion et sa paix avec son Père céleste. Il faut ainsi que la rédemption par le sang de Christ nous soit constamment appliquée, que nul n'oublie la purification de ses anciens péchés, sans quoi il retomberait dans l'insensibilité morale, l'endurcissement ou la propre justice. (2Pierre 1.9)
