Ce chant. Le mot hébreu maschal signifie proprement : comparaison, discours figuré, parabole ; il s'applique ensuite à toute composition littéraire ou poétique, plus spécialement à la poésie sentencieuse ou satirique (proverbe, fable, énigme, etc.). Le maschal versets 4 à 21 est un des plus beaux morceaux poétiques de l'Ancien Testament. L'auteur nous fait assister à une scène unique en son genre dans l'Ecriture : celle de l'arrivée du monarque babylonien dans le séjour des morts, où il est accueilli avec une joie railleuse par tous les rois qui l'y ont précédé. Il va sans dire que cette scène des enfers n'est qu'une fiction destinée à représenter d'une manière dramatique le profond abaissement du tout-puissant monarque.

Le roi de Babel. Ce terme ne désigne pas un individu déterminé, mais le roi de Babylone en général, la dynastie personnifiée.

La terre entière jouit du repos depuis que celui qui faisait peser sur elle un joug cruel a été renversé de son trône.
