Les cailloux du torrent. Le prophète fait allusion au culte des pierres qui était en usage chez les Phéniciens et chez d'autres peuples de l'Orient. Les idoles des anciens Arabes étaient en général des pierres brutes ; ainsi la pierre noire de la Kaaba de la Mecque, qui paraît avoir été une idole de Saturne. Il était d'usage d'oindre d'huile ces pierres sacrées, d'y déposer des offrandes et d'accomplir à l'entour les cérémonies du culte. On peut rapprocher de ce fétichisme sémitique les menhirs ou pierres sacrées qui servaient au culte des anciens habitants de nos contrées.

Les expressions du prophète renferment un jeu de mots qu'on ne peut rendre dans notre langue : Le caillou (chalak) est ta part (chélek). Cette dernière expression fait sans doute allusion aux nombreux passages où l'Eternel est appelé la part des fidèles ; par exemple Psaumes 142.6. Des pierres informes, voilà ce qu'ils ont choisi, au lieu du Dieu vivant qui pourrait et devrait être leur portion !
