A la loi et au témoignage ! Les vivants, au lieu de s'adresser aux morts (verset 19), ne se tourneront-ils pas plutôt vers le Dieu vivant qui leur envoie, par son prophète, sa loi et son témoignage ? Ces deux expressions se rapportent à la révélation qui précède (voyez verset 16), et qui n'est, au fond, que la reproduction et l'application de la loi donnée par Moïse. Revenir à ce témoignage divin, c'est l'unique moyen du salut. Car, pour le peuple incrédule, il n'y a attendre qu'une nuit sans aurore, une nuit que ne traverse aucun rayon de lumière, c'est-à-dire un châtiment sans consolation et sans soulagement.
