1 Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to Yahweh, and said, "I will sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. The horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.2 Yah is my strength and song. He has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him; my father's God, and I will exalt him.3 Yahweh is a man of war. Yahweh is his name.4 He has cast Pharaoh's chariots and his army into the sea. His chosen captains are sunk in the Red Sea .5 The deeps cover them. They went down into the depths like a stone.6 Your right hand, Yahweh, is glorious in power. Your right hand, Yahweh, dashes the enemy in pieces.7 In the greatness of your excellency, you overthrow those who rise up against you. You send forth your wrath. It consumes them as stubble.8 With the blast of your nostrils, the waters were piled up. The floods stood upright as a heap. The deeps were congealed in the heart of the sea.9 The enemy said, 'I will pursue. I will overtake. I will divide the spoil. My desire shall be satisfied on them. I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.'10 You blew with your wind. The sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.11 Who is like you, Yahweh, among the gods? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?12 You stretched out your right hand. The earth swallowed them.13 "You, in your loving kindness, have led the people that you have redeemed. You have guided them in your strength to your holy habitation.14 The peoples have heard. They tremble. Pangs have taken hold on the inhabitants of Philistia.15 Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed. Trembling takes hold of the mighty men of Moab. All the inhabitants of Canaan are melted away.16 Terror and dread falls on them. By the greatness of your arm they are as still as a stone-- until your people pass over, Yahweh, until the people pass over who you have purchased.17 You shall bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, the place, Yahweh, which you have made for yourself to dwell in; the sanctuary, Lord, which your hands have established.18 Yahweh shall reign forever and ever."19 For the horses of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and Yahweh brought back the waters of the sea on them; but the children of Israel walked on dry land in the midst of the sea.20 Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances.21 Miriam answered them, "Sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. 22 Moses led Israel onward from the Red Sea , and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.23 When they came to Marah, they couldn't drink from the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore its name was called Marah.24 The people murmured against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?"25 Then he cried to Yahweh. Yahweh showed him a tree, and he threw it into the waters, and the waters were made sweet. There he made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there he tested them;26 and he said, "If you will diligently listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, and will do that which is right in his eyes, and will pay attention to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you, which I have put on the Egyptians; for I am Yahweh who heals you."27 They came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water, and seventy palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters. -

1 Moïse et les Israélites chantèrent en l’honneur du Seigneur le cantique que voici : Je veux chanter en l’honneur du Seigneur : il a remporté une victoire éclatante, il a jeté à la mer chevaux et cavaliers !2 Ma grande force, c’est le Seigneur, il est venu à mon secours. Il est mon Dieu, je le louerai ; il est le Dieu de mon père, je proclamerai sa grandeur.3 Le Seigneur est le héros des combats ; il mérite bien son nom : Le Seigneur.4 Il a jeté à la mer les chars et les troupes du Pharaon ; les meilleurs officiers égyptiens se sont noyés dans la mer des Roseaux.5 Ils ont coulé au fond comme des pierres et les flots les ont recouverts.6 Seigneur, quelle force dans ta main droite ! C’est elle qui met tes ennemis en pièces.7 Que ta grandeur est impressionnante ! Elle renverse tes adversaires. Si tu déchaînes le feu de ta colère, ils sont brûlés comme un tas de paille.8 Sous la violence de ton souffle les masses d’eau se sont amoncelées, les vagues se sont dressées comme un mur, les flots se sont figés au fond de la mer.9 Nos ennemis avaient dit : « Nous allons les poursuivre, les rattraper ; nous prendrons notre part de butin, plus que nous n’en désirons. Nous tirerons notre épée, nous remettrons la main sur eux. »10 Mais toi, Seigneur, tu as soufflé, les flots les ont recouverts ! Comme un bloc de plomb, ils ont coulé à pic au fond de la mer déchaînée.11 Seigneur, qui parmi les dieux est comparable à toi ? Qui est comme toi, éclatant de sainteté, redoutable, digne d’acclamations, capable d’accomplir des prodiges ?12 Un seul geste de ta main droite, et la terre a englouti nos poursuivants.13 Tu as délivré ton peuple ! Avec amour, avec puissance, tu le conduis vers le pays que tu lui réserves.14 Les peuples voisins tremblent à cette nouvelle : les Philistins sont saisis d’angoisse,15 les chefs d’Édom sont plongés dans la crainte, les princes de Moab sont remplis d’effroi, les Cananéens perdent tout courage.16 Une terreur panique s’abat sur eux. Devant la puissance de ton intervention, ils demeurent paralysés, Seigneur, jusqu’à ce que ton peuple ait passé, le peuple que tu as acquis.17 Maintenant tu le conduis sur ta montagne pour l’y installer, Seigneur. C’est le lieu que tu as préparé pour y habiter et y fonder toi-même ton sanctuaire.18 Seigneur, tu es roi pour toujours !19 Lorsque les chevaux, les chars et les cavaliers du Pharaon avaient pénétré dans la mer, le Seigneur avait ramené les flots sur eux. Mais les Israélites, eux, avaient pu traverser la mer à pied sec.20 Alors la prophétesse Miriam, sœur d’Aaron, prit son tambourin. Toutes les femmes d’Israël la suivirent en dansant au son des tambourins.21 Miriam reprenait devant elles le refrain : Chantez en l’honneur du Seigneur : il a remporté une victoire éclatante, il a jeté à la mer chevaux et cavaliers !L'eau de Mara
22 Les Israélites, conduits par Moïse, quittèrent la mer des Roseaux et se dirigèrent vers le désert de Chour. Ils marchèrent trois jours dans le désert sans trouver d’eau.23 Lorsqu’ils arrivèrent à Mara, ils ne purent pas y boire l’eau qui s’y trouvait, car elle était amère. – De là vient le nom de Mara, qui signifie “Amertume”. –24 La foule se mit à protester contre Moïse et à dire : « Qu’allons-nous boire ? »25 Moïse implora le Seigneur, qui lui montra un morceau de bois. Moïse le jeta dans l’eau et l’eau devint buvable. C’est là que le Seigneur donna aux Israélites des lois et des coutumes, là aussi qu’il les mit à l’épreuve.26 Il leur dit : « Si vous m’obéissez vraiment, à moi, le Seigneur votre Dieu, en faisant ce que je considère comme juste, si vous écoutez mes commandements et mettez en pratique toutes mes lois, alors je ne vous infligerai aucune des maladies que j’ai infligées aux Égyptiens. En effet, je suis le Seigneur, celui qui vous guérit. »27 Les Israélites arrivèrent ensuite à Élim. Il s’y trouvait douze sources et soixante-dix palmiers. Ils campèrent là, près de l’eau.
