Un royaume de sacrificateurs. C'est la traduction littérale. Ce qui ne peut signifier qu'un peuple ayant pour roi l'Eternel (non quelque souverain terrestre), et dont les membres seront tous sacrificateurs, c'est-à-dire ayant le droit, comme consacrés à l'Eternel, de s'approcher de lui pour l'adorer et le servir : ainsi un peuple de prêtres gouverné par le roi divin. La notion de royauté n'est pas appliquée par le texte hébreu aux Israélites eux-mêmes ; elle a été introduite par les LXX qui ont traduit par sacrificature royale.

Saint Pierre (1Pierre 2.9) cite ce passage d'après eux en l'appliquant aux chrétiens ; comparez aussi Apocalypse 1.6 ; 5.10
Il pouvait le faire, après que la participation des fidèles à la souveraineté de Jésus avait fait d'eux non seulement des sacrificateurs, mais aussi des rois. Cela ne doit pas nous empêcher de constater le sens exact de la parole divine dans l'Ancien Testament, d'après lequel la royauté n'est attribuée qu'à Dieu seul.

Une nation sainte. Le mot employé pour dire nation (goï) est celui qui désigne dans l'Ancien Testament les nations en général. Israël est l'une d'entre elles, par lui-même semblable à elles ; mais ce qui le distingue des autres, c'est le cachet de sainteté, de consécration à l'Eternel, empreint sur sa vie entière. On comprend qu'au moment où ce sceau s'efface, Israël soit de nouveau traité comme goï. Cependant la fidélité divine maintient même alors la promesse renfermée dans cette expression : vous serez, c'est-à-dire : vous deviendrez infailliblement.

La première des expressions par lesquelles le peuple est désigné (un royaume de sacrificateurs) a trait à la relation d'Israël avec Dieu lui-même ; la seconde (nation sainte), à son rapport aux autres peuples.
