Jusqu'ici le peuple n'avait pas donné le moindre signe de repentance. Il ouvre enfin les yeux et comprend la gravité de la situation : il cesse d'être le peuple de l'Eternel et devient celui d'un ange quelconque, comme les autres nations de la terre. A la vue de ce malheur qui le menace, il se dépouille de tous ses ornements (pendants d'oreilles, colliers, bagues, bracelets), comme on le fait en un jour de deuil.
