1 Moses answered, "But, behold, they will not believe me, nor listen to my voice; for they will say, 'Yahweh has not appeared to you.'"2 Yahweh said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A rod."3 He said, "Throw it on the ground." He threw it on the ground, and it became a snake; and Moses ran away from it.4 Yahweh said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand, and take it by the tail." He stretched out his hand, and took hold of it, and it became a rod in his hand.5 "That they may believe that Yahweh, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you."6 Yahweh said furthermore to him, "Now put your hand inside your cloak." He put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, as white as snow.7 He said, "Put your hand inside your cloak again." He put his hand inside his cloak again, and when he took it out of his cloak, behold, it had turned again as his other flesh.8 "It will happen, if they will neither believe you nor listen to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.9 It will happen, if they will not believe even these two signs, neither listen to your voice, that you shall take of the water of the river, and pour it on the dry land. 10 Moses said to Yahweh, "O Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before now, nor since you have spoken to your servant; for I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue."11 Yahweh said to him, "Who made man's mouth? Or who makes one mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Isn't it I, Yahweh?12 Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall speak."13 He said, "Oh, Lord, please send someone else."14 The anger of Yahweh was kindled against Moses, and he said, "What about Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Also, behold, he comes out to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.15 You shall speak to him, and put the words in his mouth. I will be with your mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what you shall do.16 He will be your spokesman to the people; and it will happen, that he will be to you a mouth, and you will be to him as God.17 You shall take this rod in your hand, with which you shall do the signs."Moïse retourne auprès de son peuple
18 Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and said to him, "Please let me go and return to my brothers who are in Egypt, and see whether they are still alive." Jethro said to Moses, "Go in peace."19 Yahweh said to Moses in Midian, "Go, return into Egypt; for all the men who sought your life are dead."20 Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. Moses took God's rod in his hand.21 Yahweh said to Moses, "When you go back into Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your hand, but I will harden his heart and he will not let the people go.22 You shall tell Pharaoh, 'Thus says Yahweh, Israel is my son, my firstborn,23 and I have said to you, "Let my son go, that he may serve me"; and you have refused to let him go. Behold, I will kill your son, your firstborn.'"24 It happened on the way at a lodging place, that Yahweh met Moses and wanted to kill him.25 Then Zipporah took a flint, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet; and she said, "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me."26 So he let him alone. Then she said, "You are a bridegroom of blood," because of the circumcision.27 Yahweh said to Aaron, "Go into the wilderness to meet Moses." He went, and met him on God's mountain, and kissed him.28 Moses told Aaron all the words of Yahweh with which he had sent him, and all the signs with which he had instructed him.29 Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel.30 Aaron spoke all the words which Yahweh had spoken to Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people.31 The people believed, and when they heard that Yahweh had visited the children of Israel, and that he had seen their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshiped. -

18 וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ מֹשֶׁ֜ה וַיָּ֣שָׁב ׀ אֶל־יֶ֣תֶר חֹֽתְנ֗וֹ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ אֵ֣לְכָה נָּ֗א וְאָשׁ֙וּבָה֙ אֶל־אַחַ֣י אֲשֶׁר־בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם וְאֶרְאֶ֖ה הַעוֹדָ֣ם חַיִּ֑ים וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יִתְר֛וֹ לְמֹשֶׁ֖ה לֵ֥ךְ לְשָׁלֽוֹם׃19 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֤ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֙ בְּמִדְיָ֔ן לֵ֖ךְ שֻׁ֣ב מִצְרָ֑יִם כִּי־מֵ֙תוּ֙ כָּל־הָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֔ים הַֽמְבַקְשִׁ֖ים אֶת־נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃20 וַיִּקַּ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־אִשְׁתּ֣וֹ וְאֶת־בָּנָ֗יו וַיַּרְכִּבֵם֙ עַֽל־הַחֲמֹ֔ר וַיָּ֖שָׁב אַ֣רְצָה מִצְרָ֑יִם וַיִּקַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־מַטֵּ֥ה הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּיָדֽוֹ׃21 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָה֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֒ בְּלֶכְתְּךָ֙ לָשׁ֣וּב מִצְרַ֔יְמָה רְאֵ֗ה כָּל־הַמֹּֽפְתִים֙ אֲשֶׁר־שַׂ֣מְתִּי בְיָדֶ֔ךָ וַעֲשִׂיתָ֖ם לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה וַאֲנִי֙ אֲחַזֵּ֣ק אֶת־לִבּ֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א יְשַׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־הָעָֽם׃22 וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה בְּנִ֥י בְכֹרִ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃23 וָאֹמַ֣ר אֵלֶ֗יךָ שַׁלַּ֤ח אֶת־בְּנִי֙ וְיַֽעַבְדֵ֔נִי וַתְּמָאֵ֖ן לְשַׁלְּח֑וֹ הִנֵּה֙ אָנֹכִ֣י הֹרֵ֔ג אֶת־בִּנְךָ֖ בְּכֹרֶֽךָ׃24 וַיְהִ֥י בַדֶּ֖רֶךְ בַּמָּל֑וֹן וַיִּפְגְּשֵׁ֣הוּ יְהוָ֔ה וַיְבַקֵּ֖שׁ הֲמִיתֽוֹ׃25 וַתִּקַּ֨ח צִפֹּרָ֜ה צֹ֗ר וַתִּכְרֹת֙ אֶת־עָרְלַ֣ת בְּנָ֔הּ וַתַּגַּ֖ע לְרַגְלָ֑יו וַתֹּ֕אמֶר כִּ֧י חֲתַן־דָּמִ֛ים אַתָּ֖ה לִֽי׃26 וַיִּ֖רֶף מִמֶּ֑נּוּ אָ֚ז אָֽמְרָ֔ה חֲתַ֥ן דָּמִ֖ים לַמּוּלֹֽת׃27 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֔ן לֵ֛ךְ לִקְרַ֥את מֹשֶׁ֖ה הַמִּדְבָּ֑רָה וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַֽיִּפְגְּשֵׁ֛הוּ בְּהַ֥ר הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיִּשַּׁק־לֽוֹ׃28 וַיַּגֵּ֤ד מֹשֶׁה֙ לְאַֽהֲרֹ֔ן אֵ֛ת כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר שְׁלָח֑וֹ וְאֵ֥ת כָּל־הָאֹתֹ֖ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּֽהוּ׃29 וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֑ן וַיַּ֣אַסְפ֔וּ אֶת־כָּל־זִקְנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃30 וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אַהֲרֹ֔ן אֵ֚ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הָאֹתֹ֖ת לְעֵינֵ֥י הָעָֽם׃31 וַֽיַּאֲמֵ֖ן הָעָ֑ם וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֡וּ כִּֽי־פָקַ֨ד יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וְכִ֤י רָאָה֙ אֶת־עָנְיָ֔ם וַֽיִּקְּד֖וּ וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּֽוּ׃ -

1 Moïse répond au SEIGNEUR : « Mais voilà ! Les Israélites ne me croiront pas. Ils ne m’obéiront pas, mais ils diront : “Non, le SEIGNEUR ne s’est pas montré à toi.” »2 Le SEIGNEUR demande à Moïse : « Qu’est-ce que tu tiens à la main ? » Moïse répond : « Un bâton. »3 Le SEIGNEUR lui dit : « Jette-le par terre ! » Moïse le jette par terre : le bâton devient un serpent. Moïse recule très vite devant lui.4 Le SEIGNEUR lui donne cet ordre : « Avance ta main et prends le serpent par la queue. » Moïse avance la main et il prend le serpent. Le serpent redevient un bâton dans sa main.5 Le SEIGNEUR dit : « Cela prouvera que je me suis montré à toi, moi, le SEIGNEUR, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres, le Dieu d’Abraham, le Dieu d’Isaac et le Dieu de Jacob. »6 Le SEIGNEUR ajoute : « Mets ta main sur ta poitrine. » Moïse fait cela. Mais quand il retire sa main, il voit qu’elle est blanche comme du lait. Elle est couverte de lèpre.7 Le SEIGNEUR dit encore à Moïse : « Remets ta main sur ta poitrine. » Moïse fait cela. Et quand il retire sa main, elle est redevenue normale.8 Le SEIGNEUR lui dit : « Les Israélites ne te croiront peut-être pas et ils ne t’obéiront pas, malgré le premier signe, celui du bâton. Alors ils croiront à cause du deuxième, celui de la lèpre sur ta main.9 Mais s’ils ne croient pas malgré ces deux signes et s’ils ne t’obéissent pas, tu prendras de l’eau du Nil et tu la verseras par terre. Alors cette eau deviendra du sang. »Dieu désigne Aaron comme adjoint de Moïse
10 Moïse dit au SEIGNEUR : « Ah, Seigneur, excuse-moi ! Je ne sais pas parler. Déjà quand j’étais petit, je ne parlais pas bien. Et cela n’a pas changé depuis que tu me parles. Ma bouche n’arrive pas à dire ce que je veux. »11 Le SEIGNEUR répond à Moïse : « Qui a fait une bouche à l’homme ? Qui lui ferme la bouche ou les oreilles ? Qui lui ouvre les yeux ? Qui le rend aveugle ? Est-ce que ce n’est pas moi, le SEIGNEUR ?12 Maintenant, pars ! Je serai avec toi quand tu parleras, et je t’apprendrai tout ce que tu devras dire. »13 Moïse dit : « Ah, Seigneur, excuse-moi ! Envoie quelqu’un d’autre ! »14 Alors le SEIGNEUR se met en colère contre Moïse. Il dit : « Et ton frère Aaron, le lévite ? Il parle bien, lui, je le sais ! Le voici, il vient déjà à ta rencontre. Quand il te verra, son cœur sera plein de joie.15 Parle-lui et dis-lui ce qu’il devra dire. Oui, moi, je serai avec vous deux quand vous parlerez et je vous montrerai ce que vous aurez à faire.16 Aaron parlera au peuple à ta place, il sera ton porte-parole. Et toi, tu seras pour lui comme un dieu.17 De plus, tu tiendras ce bâton dans ta main. Avec lui, tu feras des choses étonnantes. »Moïse retourne auprès de son peuple
18 Moïse retourne auprès de Jéthro, son beau-père. Il lui dit : « Je dois partir et retourner vers mes frères hébreux qui sont en Égypte. Je veux voir s’ils sont encore vivants. » Jéthro lui répond : « Va en paix ! »19 Le SEIGNEUR dit encore à Moïse au pays de Madian : « Oui, retourne en Égypte. En effet, ceux qui voulaient te tuer sont morts. »20 Alors Moïse prend sa femme et ses fils. Il les fait monter sur un âne et il retourne en Égypte. Dans sa main, il tient le bâton que Dieu lui a dit de prendre.21 Le SEIGNEUR dit à Moïse : « Je t’ai donné le pouvoir de faire des choses extraordinaires. Quand tu seras retourné en Égypte, n’oublie pas de les faire devant le roi de ce pays. Mais moi, je fermerai son cœur, et il ne laissera pas partir les Israélites.22 Alors tu lui diras de ma part : “Voici ce que moi, le SEIGNEUR, je t’annonce : Le peuple d’Israël est mon fils, mon fils aîné.23 Je t’ai commandé de le laisser partir pour me servir, mais tu refuses. C’est pourquoi je vais faire mourir ton fils aîné.” »24 Au cours du voyage, pendant le repos de la nuit, le SEIGNEUR s’approche de Moïse et il cherche à le faire mourir.25 Séfora prend aussitôt une pierre coupante. Elle circoncit son fils et touche les pieds de Moïse avec la peau qu’elle a coupée. Puis elle dit : « Tu es pour moi un mari de sang. »26 Alors le SEIGNEUR s’éloigne de Moïse. Séfora a dit « mari de sang » à cause de la circoncision.27 Le SEIGNEUR dit à Aaron : « Va dans le désert à la rencontre de Moïse. » Aaron part. Il trouve son frère à la montagne de Dieu et il l’embrasse.28 Moïse rapporte à Aaron les ordres du SEIGNEUR : toutes les paroles que lui, Moïse, doit dire de la part du SEIGNEUR, et les choses extraordinaires qu’il doit faire.29 Ensuite, tous les deux vont réunir les anciens du peuple d’Israël.30 Aaron répète toutes les paroles que le SEIGNEUR a dites à Moïse. Et il fait les choses extraordinaires devant le peuple.31 Le peuple est d’accord avec ce qu’il dit. Les Israélites comprennent ceci : le SEIGNEUR va les aider parce qu’il a vu leur souffrance. Alors ils se mettent à genoux pour adorer le SEIGNEUR. -

18 Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and said to him, "Please let me go and return to my brothers who are in Egypt, and see whether they are still alive." Jethro said to Moses, "Go in peace."19 Yahweh said to Moses in Midian, "Go, return into Egypt; for all the men who sought your life are dead."20 Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. Moses took God's rod in his hand.21 Yahweh said to Moses, "When you go back into Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your hand, but I will harden his heart and he will not let the people go.22 You shall tell Pharaoh, 'Thus says Yahweh, Israel is my son, my firstborn,23 and I have said to you, "Let my son go, that he may serve me"; and you have refused to let him go. Behold, I will kill your son, your firstborn.'"24 It happened on the way at a lodging place, that Yahweh met Moses and wanted to kill him.25 Then Zipporah took a flint, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet; and she said, "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me."26 So he let him alone. Then she said, "You are a bridegroom of blood," because of the circumcision.27 Yahweh said to Aaron, "Go into the wilderness to meet Moses." He went, and met him on God's mountain, and kissed him.28 Moses told Aaron all the words of Yahweh with which he had sent him, and all the signs with which he had instructed him.29 Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel.30 Aaron spoke all the words which Yahweh had spoken to Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people.31 The people believed, and when they heard that Yahweh had visited the children of Israel, and that he had seen their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshiped.
