Le premier caractère du sacrificateur est "d'être pris d'entre les hommes" (Hébreux 5.1, note) afin qu'il offre des sacrifices et accomplisse son office de médiateur, en tant qu'il est capable de compatir aux infirmités de ses semblables, infirmités qu'il connaît par sa propre expérience.

C'est là aussi le caractère que l'auteur a déjà relevé dans notre grand Sacrificateur. (Hébreux 2.17,18 ; 4.15)

Seulement le mot par lequel il exprime ici la compassion des sacrificateurs de l'ancienne Alliance est différent de celui qu'il emploie (Hébreux 4.15) en parlant du Sauveur. On pourrait le rendre par user d'indulgence, littéralement souffrir avec mesure, c'est-à-dire, faire intervenir la modération et la douceur dans l'impression qu'ils ressentent du mal chez les autres.

- Ceux envers qui ils doivent agir ainsi sont (grec) les ignorants et les errants. On admet généralement que ces mots font allusion à la distinction établie dans la loi entre les péchés accomplis "à main levée," dont l'auteur devait être retranché du milieu du peuple, et les fautes commises involontairement, pour lesquelles le sacrificateur pouvait intervenir. (Lévitique 4.13 ; 5.15,17 ; Nombres 15.27-31)

Si cette disposition de la loi a inspiré la parole de notre verset, celle-ci doit être prise cependant dans un sens plus général : ceux dont il est question sont les hommes pécheurs de toute nation et de toute condition, que leurs péchés, quelle qu'en fût la nature, ont plongé dans l'ignorance (Actes 17.23) et l'égarement. (1Pierre 2.25)

Le souverain sacrificateur est enveloppé de faiblesse, la faiblesse l'entoure comme un vêtement, elle le paralyse ; dans Actes 28.20, le même verbe est employé de la chaîne dont Paul est lié.
