Le vœu de l'auteur est précisément que la vie chrétienne de chacun de ses lecteurs soit tout l'opposé du terrible tableau qu'il a tracé, (Hébreux 6.4-8) car ce n'est réellement que par la sanctification de la vie que se démontre en chacun l'état de grâce et la pleine certitude de l'espérance.

Le mot jusqu'à la fin, prononcé plus d'une fois par le Sauveur lui-même, (Matthieu 10.22 ; 24.13 ; Marc 13.13) couronne la pensée de l'auteur.

L'espérance mentionnée dans ce texte est une recherche certaine des bénédictions promises par Dieu ; cette espérance est animée par l’amour que l’on éprouve pour Dieu, elle conditionne notre attente et la mesure de Ses engagements.

L'espérance comporte divers degrés, tout comme la foi. La promesse que Dieu a faite aux croyants provient du dessein éternel qu’Il a établi, elle est immuable et en phase avec le Père éternel, le Fils, et l'Esprit. Les promesses de Dieu sont pour nous une ferme assurance ; nous avons dans ce texte deux éléments immuables : le conseil et le serment de Dieu, au sujet desquels Il ne peut mentir. Si cette vérité n’était pas, elle serait contraire à la nature et à la volonté divines. Comme Dieu ne peut pas mentir, la destruction de l'incrédule et le salut du croyant sont inexorables, l'une comme l'autre.

Observons dans ce texte que ceux à qui Dieu a accordé la joie de demeurer en Lui, bénéficient de promesses, par « héritage ». Les consolations de Dieu sont suffisamment solides pour soutenir Son peuple, même dans les épreuves les plus lourdes. Dieu est un véritable « Refuge », pour tous les pécheurs qui recherchent Sa Miséricorde, à travers la Rédemption de Christ, selon Sa Grâce, laissant de côté toute autre considération.

Nous sommes en ce monde tel un navire sur la mer, ballotté ça et là, courant souvent le risque de partir à la dérive. Nous avons besoin d'une « ancre » pour nous garder fermement. L'espérance que nous accorde l'Évangile est notre « ancre », dans les tempêtes ici-bas. Cette ancre est sûre et solide, sinon elle ne pourrait pas nous garder ainsi, en sécurité !

La Grâce de Dieu, les mérites et la médiation de Christ, comme les influences puissantes de son Esprit, constituent les bases d’une solide espérance spirituelle. Christ est l'objet et le fondement de l'espérance du croyant. Portons donc nos affections sur les « choses d'en haut », et attendons patiemment leur venue, lorsque nous paraîtrons avec Christ, dans Sa gloire !
