1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.2 It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.3 The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick."4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it."5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.7 Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let's go into Judea again."8 The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"9 Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world.10 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn't in him."11 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."12 The disciples therefore said, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.14 So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead.15 I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. 17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.19 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died.22 Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you."23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."24 Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God's Son, he who comes into the world."Jésus pleure
28 When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you."29 When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there."32 Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died."33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,34 and said, "Where have you laid him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."35 Jesus wept.36 The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!"37 Some of them said, "Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?"Lazare est ramené à la vie
38 Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."40 Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"41 So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.42 I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me."43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"44 He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. 45 Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him.46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs.48 If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,50 nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."51 Now he didn't say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.53 So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.56 Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think--that he isn't coming to the feast at all?"57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him. -

Il habitait Béthanie, le village où vivaient Marie et sa sœur Marthe.2 – Marie était cette femme qui répandit du parfum sur les pieds du Seigneur et les essuya avec ses cheveux, et c’était son frère Lazare qui était malade. –3 Les deux sœurs envoyèrent quelqu’un dire à Jésus : « Seigneur, ton ami est malade. »4 Lorsque Jésus apprit cette nouvelle, il dit : « La maladie de Lazare ne le fera pas mourir ; elle doit servir à montrer la puissance glorieuse de Dieu et à manifester ainsi la gloire du Fils de Dieu. »5 Jésus aimait Marthe et sa sœur, ainsi que Lazare.6 Or, quand il apprit que Lazare était malade, il resta encore deux jours à l’endroit où il se trouvait,7 puis il dit à ses disciples : « Retournons en Judée. »8 Les disciples lui répondirent : « Maître, il y a très peu de temps on cherchait à te tuer à coups de pierres là-bas et tu veux y retourner ? »9 Jésus leur dit : « Il y a douze heures dans le jour, n’est-ce pas ? Si quelqu’un marche pendant le jour, il ne trébuche pas, parce qu’il voit la lumière de ce monde.10 Mais si quelqu’un marche pendant la nuit, il trébuche, parce qu’il n’y a pas de lumière en lui. »11 Après avoir dit cela, Jésus ajouta : « Notre ami Lazare s’est endormi, mais je vais aller le réveiller. »12 Les disciples répondirent : « Seigneur, s’il s’est endormi, il guérira. »13 En fait, Jésus avait parlé de la mort de Lazare, mais les disciples pensaient qu’il parlait du sommeil ordinaire.14 Jésus leur dit alors clairement : « Lazare est mort.15 Je me réjouis pour vous de n’avoir pas été là-bas, parce que ainsi vous croirez en moi. Mais allons auprès de lui. »16 Alors Thomas – surnommé le Jumeau – dit aux autres disciples : « Allons-y, nous aussi, pour mourir avec notre Maître ! »Jésus est la résurrection et la vie
17 Quand Jésus arriva, il apprit que Lazare était dans la tombe depuis quatre jours déjà.18 Béthanie est proche de Jérusalem, à moins de trois kilomètres,19 et beaucoup de Juifs étaient venus chez Marthe et Marie pour les consoler de la mort de leur frère.20 Quand Marthe apprit que Jésus arrivait, elle partit à sa rencontre ; mais Marie resta assise à la maison.21 Marthe dit à Jésus : « Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort.22 Mais je sais que même maintenant Dieu te donnera tout ce que tu lui demanderas. »23 Jésus lui dit : « Ton frère se relèvera de la mort. »24 Marthe répondit : « Je sais qu’il se relèvera lors de la résurrection des morts, au dernier jour. »25 Jésus lui dit : « Je suis la résurrection et la vie. Celui qui croit en moi vivra, même s’il meurt ;26 et celui qui vit et croit en moi ne mourra jamais. Crois-tu cela ? » –27 « Oui, Seigneur, répondit-elle, je crois que tu es le Messie, le Fils de Dieu, celui qui devait venir dans le monde. »Jésus pleure
28 Sur ces mots, Marthe s’en alla appeler sa sœur Marie et lui dit tout bas : « Le Maître est là et il te demande de venir. »29 Dès que Marie eut entendu cela, elle se leva et courut au-devant de Jésus.30 Or, Jésus n’était pas encore entré dans le village, mais il se trouvait toujours à l’endroit où Marthe l’avait rencontré.31 Quand les Juifs qui étaient dans la maison avec Marie pour la consoler la virent se lever et sortir en hâte, ils la suivirent. Ils pensaient qu’elle allait au tombeau pour y pleurer.32 Marie arriva là où se trouvait Jésus ; dès qu’elle le vit, elle se jeta à ses pieds et lui dit : « Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort. »33 Jésus vit qu’elle pleurait, ainsi que ceux qui étaient venus avec elle. Il en fut profondément ému et troublé,34 et il leur demanda : « Où l’avez-vous mis ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Seigneur, viens et tu verras. »35 Jésus pleura.36 Les Juifs dirent alors : « Voyez comme il l’aimait ! »37 Mais quelques-uns d’entre eux dirent : « Lui qui a guéri les yeux de l’aveugle, ne pouvait-il pas aussi empêcher Lazare de mourir ? »Lazare est ramené à la vie
38 Jésus, de nouveau profondément ému, se rendit au tombeau. C’était une caverne, dont l’entrée était fermée par une grosse pierre.39 « Enlevez la pierre », dit Jésus. Marthe, la sœur du mort, lui dit : « Seigneur, il doit sentir mauvais, car il y a déjà quatre jours qu’il est ici. »40 Jésus lui répondit : « Ne te l’ai-je pas dit ? Si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu. »41 On enleva donc la pierre. Jésus leva les yeux vers le ciel et dit : « Père, je te remercie de m’avoir écouté.42 Je sais que tu m’écoutes toujours, mais je le dis à cause de ces gens qui m’entourent, afin qu’ils croient que tu m’as envoyé. »43 Cela dit, il cria très fort : « Lazare, sors de là ! »44 Le mort sortit, les pieds et les mains entourés de bandes et le visage enveloppé d’un linge. Jésus dit alors : « Déliez-le et laissez-le aller. »Le complot contre Jésus
45 Beaucoup de Juifs, parmi ceux qui étaient venus chez Marie et avaient vu ce que Jésus avait fait, crurent en lui.46 Mais quelques-uns d’entre eux allèrent trouver les Pharisiens et leur racontèrent ce que Jésus avait fait.47 Les chefs des prêtres et les Pharisiens réunirent alors le Conseil supérieur et dirent : « Qu’allons-nous faire ? Car cet homme réalise beaucoup de signes miraculeux !48 Si nous le laissons agir ainsi, tous croiront en lui, puis les autorités romaines interviendront et détruiront notre temple et notre nation ! »49 L’un d’entre eux, nommé Caïphe, qui était grand-prêtre cette année-là, leur dit : « Vous n’y comprenez rien !50 Ne saisissez-vous pas qu’il est de votre intérêt qu’un seul homme meure pour le peuple et qu’ainsi la nation entière ne soit pas détruite ? »51 Or, ce n’est pas de lui-même qu’il disait cela ; mais, comme il était grand-prêtre cette année-là, il prophétisait que Jésus devait mourir pour la nation juive,52 et non seulement pour cette nation, mais aussi pour rassembler en un seul corps tous les enfants de Dieu dispersés.53 Dès ce jour-là, les autorités juives décidèrent de faire mourir Jésus.54 C’est pourquoi Jésus cessa d’aller et venir en public parmi les Juifs. Il se rendit dans une région voisine du désert, dans une localité appelée Éfraïm, où il resta avec ses disciples.55 La fête juive de la Pâque était proche, et beaucoup de gens du pays se rendirent à Jérusalem pour se purifier avant cette fête.56 Ils cherchaient Jésus et, alors qu’ils se tenaient dans le temple, ils se demandaient les uns aux autres : « Qu’en pensez-vous ? Viendra-t-il à la fête ou non ? »57 Les chefs des prêtres et les Pharisiens avaient ordonné que si quelqu’un savait où était Jésus, il devait les avertir, afin qu’on puisse l’arrêter. -

Si quelqu'un marche de jour, il ne bronche pas, car il voit la lumière de ce monde ;10 mais si quelqu'un marche de nuit, il bronche, car la lumière n'est pas en lui.11 Il dit ces choses ; et après cela il leur dit : Lazare, notre ami, s'est endormi ; mais je vais pour l'éveiller.12 Les disciples donc lui dirent : Seigneur, s'il s'est endormi, il sera guéri.13 Jésus avait parlé de sa mort ; mais eux pensaient qu'il avait parlé du dormir du sommeil.14 Jésus leur dit donc alors ouvertement : Lazare est mort ;15 et je me réjouis, à cause de vous, de ce que je n'étais pas là, afin que vous croyiez. Crois-tu cela ?27 Elle lui dit : Oui, Seigneur, moi je crois que tu es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, qui vient dans le monde.Jésus pleure
28 Et ayant dit cela, elle s'en alla et appela secrètement Marie, sa soeur, disant : Le maître est venu, et il t'appelle.29 Celle-ci, aussitôt qu'elle l'eut entendu, se lève promptement et s'en vient à lui.30 (Or Jésus n'était pas encore arrivé dans le village ; mais il était au lieu où Marthe l'avait rencontré).31 Les Juifs donc qui étaient avec Marie dans la maison et qui la consolaient, ayant vu que Marie s'était levée promptement et était sortie, la suivirent, disant : Elle s'en va au sépulcre pour y pleurer.32 Marie donc, quand elle fut venue là où était Jésus, et qu'elle l'eut vu, se jeta à ses pieds, lui disant : Seigneur, si tu eusses été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort.33 Jésus donc, quand il la vit pleurer, et les Juifs qui étaient venus avec elle, pleurer, frémit en son esprit, et se troubla,34 et dit : Où l'avez-vous mis ? Ils lui disent : Seigneur, viens et vois.35 Jésus pleura.36 Les Juifs donc dirent : Voyez comme il l'affectionnait.37 Mais quelques-uns d'entre eux dirent : Celui-ci qui a ouvert les yeux de l'aveugle, n'aurait-il pas pu faire aussi que cet homme ne mourût pas ?Lazare est ramené à la vie
38 Jésus donc, frémissant encore en lui-même, vient au sépulcre (or c'était une grotte, et il y avait une pierre dessus).39 Jésus dit : Otez la pierre. Marthe, la soeur du mort, lui dit : Seigneur, il sent déjà, car il est là depuis quatre jours.40 Jésus lui dit : Ne t'ai-je pas dit que, si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu ?41 Ils ôtèrent donc la pierre. Et Jésus leva les yeux en haut et dit : Père, je te rends grâces de ce que tu m'as entendu.42 Or moi je savais que tu m'entends toujours ; mais je l'ai dit à cause de la foule qui est autour de moi, afin qu'ils croient que toi, tu m'as envoyé.43 ayant dit ces choses, il cria à haute voix : Lazare, sors dehors !44 Et le mort sortit, ayant les pieds et les mains liés de bandes ; et son visage était enveloppé d'un suaire. 45 Plusieurs donc d'entre les Juifs qui étaient venus auprès de Marie, et qui avaient vu ce que Jésus avait fait, crurent en lui ;46 mais quelques-uns d'entre eux s'en allèrent auprès des pharisiens et leur dirent ce que Jésus avait fait.47 Les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens donc assemblèrent un sanhédrin, et dirent : Que faisons-nous ? car cet homme fait beaucoup de miracles.48 Si nous le laissons ainsi faire, tous croiront en lui, et les Romains viendront, et ôteront et notre lieu et notre nation.49 Et l'un d'entre eux, appelé Caïphe, qui était souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, leur dit :50 Vous ne savez rien, ni ne considérez qu'il nous est avantageux qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple et que la nation entière ne périsse pas.51 Or il ne dit pas cela de lui-même ; mais étant souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, il prophétisa que Jésus allait mourir pour la nation ;52 et non pas seulement pour la nation, mais aussi pour rassembler en un les enfants de Dieu dispersés.53 Depuis ce jour-là donc, ils consultèrent ensemble pour le faire mourir.54 Jésus donc ne marcha plus ouvertement parmi les Juifs ; mais il s'en alla de là dans la contrée qui est près du désert, en une ville appelée Éphraïm ; et il séjourna là avec les disciples.55 Or la Pâque des Juifs était proche, et plusieurs montèrent de la campagne à Jérusalem, avant la Pâque, afin de se purifier.56 Ils cherchaient donc Jésus, et se disaient l'un à l'autre, comme ils étaient dans le temple : Que vous semble ? Pensez-vous qu'il ne viendra point à la fête ?57 Or les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens avaient donné ordre que si quelqu'un savait où il était, il le déclarât, afin qu'on le prît.
