En effet, ils préfèrent les compliments qui viennent des hommes à ceux qui viennent de Dieu.
Car ils aimèrent plus la gloire qui vient des hommes, que la gloire de Dieu.

La foi timide de ces hommes n'avait pas encore l'énergie nécessaires pour renoncer à la gloire qui vient des hommes et lui préférer la gloire qui vient de Dieu seul.

L'empire de l'opinion (c'est là proprement le sens du mot grec) les dominait encore. Mais nous savons de quelques-uns d'entre eux, Nicodème, Joseph d'Arimathée, que, plus tard, au moment même du plus grand danger, ils furent affranchis de cette tyrannie et partagèrent l'opprobre de Christ.
