Entre savoir et, faire, il y a un abîme ; le premier à lui seul, rend coupable, le dernier rend heureux, car il donne au disciple un trait précieux de ressemblance avec le Maître : l'humilité et l'amour.

- On voit que Jésus en exhortant les disciples à imiter son exemple passe sous silence le sens particulier que la résistance de Pierre l'avait amené à donner à son action (versets 8-10, notes.)

La raison en est bien simple, c'est que, lui seul, au moyen de son sang et de son Esprit, peut purifier le pécheur de ses souillures. Nous ne pouvons avoir à cette œuvre qu'une part très indirecte pour d'autres en les amenant à Jésus. Dans ce sens, l'exemple nous concerne aussi.
