Je retournai donc au Fara, dégageai la ceinture et la repris à l’endroit où je l’avais cachée. Je constatai qu’elle était pourrie, complètement hors d’usage.

Segond 21 Je suis retourné vers l'Euphrate, j’ai fouillé et j’ai repris la ceinture à l'endroit où je l'avais cachée, mais voici que la ceinture était abîmée, elle n'était plus bonne à rien.

Je creusai : pour retrouver la ceinture sous le limon et le gravier dont l'Euphrate l'avait couverte.

Plus bonne à rien : image de la corruption morale produite en Israël par l'invasion des idolâtries étrangères. Comparez Matthieu 5.23, le sel qui a perdu sa saveur. Chaque peuple a sa mission ; dès qu'Israël abandonnait Dieu, il était infidèle à la sienne et perdait sa raison dêtre dans l'humanité.
