2.1-17 Le jugement à venir

Il emploie quatre expressions différentes pour faire sentir la solennité redoutable du jugement dont il contemple l'approche. Des masses de brouillards et de nuages répandent au matin l'obscurité sur toute la nature ; puis au lieu de l'éclat de l'aurore, apparaît un peuple aux armes brillantes, qui apporte avec lui la destruction. Même s'il s'agit, comme nous le pensons, d'une armée ennemie, il y a évidemment allusion aux sauterelles qui venaient de dévaster le pays. L'approche de ces insectes s'annonce par un reflet jaunâtre et sinistre. Voici ce que raconte le moine portugais François Alvarez dans sa relation d'un voyage en Abyssinie :
Un jour avant l'arrivée des sauterelles, nous pouvions constater leur approche par un reflet jaune renvoyé de leurs ailes sur le ciel. Une autre fois, ce phénomène se produisit d'une façon si intense que le reflet jaunâtre se répandit sur la terre.
