Josué envoie deux espions à Jéricho
1 Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, "Go, view the land, including Jericho." They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.2 The king of Jericho was told, "Behold, men of the children of Israel came in here tonight to spy out the land."3 The king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, "Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered into your house; for they have come to spy out all the land."4 The woman took the two men and hid them. Then she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I didn't know where they came from.5 It happened about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went, I don't know. Pursue them quickly; for you will overtake them."6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.7 The men pursued them the way to the Jordan to the fords: and as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.8 Before they had laid down, she came up to them on the roof;9 and she said to the men, "I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.10 For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.11 As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.12 Now therefore, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a true token;13 and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death."14 The men said to her, "Our life for yours, if you don't talk about this business of ours; and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you."15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was on the side of the wall, and she lived on the wall.16 She said to them, "Go to the mountain, lest the pursuers find you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward, you may go your way."17 The men said to her, "We will be guiltless of this your oath which you have made us to swear.18 Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you used to let us down. You shall gather to yourself into the house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father's household.19 It shall be that whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, and we will be guiltless. Whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand is on him.20 But if you talk about this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless of your oath which you have made us to swear."21 She said, "According to your words, so be it." She sent them away, and they departed. She tied the scarlet line in the window.22 They went, and came to the mountain, and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had returned. The pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but didn't find them.23 Then the two men returned, descended from the mountain, passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had happened to them.24 They said to Joshua, "Truly Yahweh has delivered into our hands all the land. Moreover, all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us." -

1 Josué, fils de Noun, envoya secrètement de Chittim deux espions, en disant : Allez voir le pays et Jéricho ! Ils partirent et entrèrent dans la maison d’une prostituée dont le nom était Rahab, et ils y couchèrent.2 On dit au roi de Jéricho : Voici que des Israélites sont arrivés ici cette nuit pour explorer le pays.3 Alors le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab : Fais sortir les hommes venus chez toi, ceux qui sont entrés dans ta maison, car c’est pour explorer tout le pays qu’ils sont venus.4 Mais la femme emmena les deux hommes, les cacha et dit : Oui, ces hommes sont venus chez moi, mais je ne savais pas d’où ils étaient.5 Au moment où l’on allait fermer la porte, au crépuscule, ces hommes sont sortis sans que je sache où ils allaient ; hâtez-vous de les poursuivre et vous les rattraperez !6 En fait, elle les avait fait monter sur le toit et les avait dissimulés dans les tiges de lin arrangées pour elle sur le toit.7 Ces gens les poursuivirent sur la route du Jourdain, jusqu’aux gués et l’on ferma la porte après la sortie des poursuivants.8 Avant le coucher des espions, elle monta auprès d’eux sur le toit.9 Elle dit à ces hommes : L’Éternel, je le reconnais, vous a donné ce pays, la terreur que vous inspirez s’est abattue sur nous, et tous les habitants de ce pays défaillent devant vous.10 Car nous avons appris que l’Éternel a mis à sec devant vous les eaux de la mer des Joncs, lors de votre sortie d’Égypte, et comment vous avez traité les deux rois amoréens qui (régnaient) en Transjordanie, Sihôn et Og, que vous avez voués à l’interdit.11 Nous l’avons appris, le cœur nous a manqué, et chacun a perdu le souffle devant vous, car l’Éternel, votre Dieu, est Dieu dans les cieux, là-haut, et sur terre, ici-bas.12 Et maintenant, faites-moi donc un serment, par l’Éternel : Comme j’ai usé de loyauté envers vous, vous aussi, vous userez de loyauté envers ma famille. Vous me donnerez un signe qui soit certain.13 Vous laisserez vivre mon père, ma mère, mes frères, mes sœurs et tout ce qui est à eux, et vous nous ferez échapper à la mort.14 Ces hommes lui dirent : Nous sommes prêts à mourir pour vous pourvu que vous ne divulguiez pas cet engagement entre nous. Quand l’Éternel nous donnera le pays, nous userons envers toi de loyauté et de fidélité.15 Elle les fit descendre avec une corde par la fenêtre, car sa maison était dans le mur même du rempart. C’est dans le rempart qu’elle habitait.16 Elle leur dit : Allez vers la montagne, sinon les poursuivants vous rejoindront. Mettez-vous à l’abri là-bas, pendant trois jours, jusqu’au retour de ceux qui (vous) poursuivent, après quoi vous poursuivrez votre chemin.17 Ces hommes lui dirent : Voici de quelle manière nous serons quittes de ce serment que tu nous as fait faire :18 à notre arrivée dans le pays, attache ce cordon de fil écarlate à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous as fait descendre et groupe auprès de toi, dans la maison, ton père, ta mère, tes frères et toute ta famille.19 Quiconque franchira les portes de ta maison pour sortir, son sang (sera) sur sa tête et nous autres (serons) quittes ! Mais si l’on met la main sur l’un de ceux qui seront avec toi dans la maison, son sang (sera) sur notre tête !20 Si tu divulgues cet engagement entre nous, nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.21 Elle dit : Qu’il en soit selon vos engagements ! Elle les laissa partir, et ils s’en allèrent. Elle attacha le cordon écarlate à la fenêtre.22 Ils partirent, arrivèrent à la montagne et y restèrent trois jours jusqu’au retour de ceux qui les poursuivaient. Les poursuivants cherchèrent tout au long du chemin, sans (les) trouver.23 Les deux hommes redescendirent alors de la montagne et traversèrent (le Jourdain). Ils arrivèrent auprès de Josué, fils de Noun et lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé.24 Ils dirent à Josué : Certainement, l’Éternel a livré tout le pays entre nos mains, même tous les habitants du pays défaillent devant nous.
