Au lieu de consulter l'Eternel par l'Urim et le Thummim (Nombres 27.21), les chefs israélites croient s'être suffisamment assurés de l'état des choses en examinant les provisions de ces étrangers et concluent l'alliance, contrevenant ainsi sans le savoir à la défense Deutéronome 20.16-17.

Prirent de leurs provisions, non pas pour faire un repas en signe de l'alliance à conclure, mais pour s'assurer de la vérité de leur assertion.

Les Israélites ayant examiné la nourriture amenée par les Gabaonites, conclurent rapidement que ces derniers disaient cette fois la vérité. Quand nous sommes loin de Dieu, sans être en communion avec Lui, quand nous négligeons la lecture de Sa Parole et la prière, tout n'est alors que précipitation autour de nous : finalement, nous n'avançons guère dans nos affaires.

Dans ce passage, la fraude des Gabaonites fut rapidement découverte. La langue menteuse est toujours éphémère. Le serment qu'Israël passa avec ce peuple étranger, était illégal aux yeux de l'Éternel et n'engageait personne : en effet, aucune obligation n'est capable de nous astreindre à pécher. Sous d'autres points de vue, Il était, par contre, tout à fait normal de ménager ces Cananéens : ils s'étaient soumis au peuple Hébreu, ils avaient renié leur idolâtrie, ne désirant seulement qu'épargner leur vie.

Celui qui marche dans l'intégrité, ne se rétracte pas, quand il fait un serment à ses dépens, Psaume 15:4. Dès que Josué et les princes d'Israël découvrirent qu'ils avaient été trompés, ils ne s’engagèrent pas davantage auprès d’Éléazar, le souverain sacrificateur, afin de respecter leur serment, passé avec les Gabaonites ; ils voulaient encore moins altérer leur foi par le contact avec ces Cananéens.

Que ceci puisse nous convaincre à quel point nous devons tenir nos promesses, traiter nos affaires tout à fait légalement, et rester prudents dans les propos que nous tenons !
