Ce chiffre n'a rien d'excessif. Tout Israël, sauf Benjamin et Jabès de Galaad (21.8), prit part à cette guerre. De ces quatre cent mille hommes, quarante mille furent détachés pour approvisionner le reste (verset 10). Dans le commencement, Juda semble avoir combattu seul (verset 18).
