Il ramènera le cœur des pères... On a parfois appliqué ces mots à l'apaisement des divisions dans le sein des familles israélites, comme si le rétablissement de la paix domestique était la préparation à la réception du Messie. Mais il serait bien étrange qu'un fait si spécial fût l'objet de la dernière sommation de Dieu à son peuple, en vue du moment où il va paraître ; et rien absolument, dans le ministère de Jean-Baptiste, ne justifie une pareille application. Ce qui séparait Israël de son Dieu, c'était le formalisme, le culte purement extérieur, et l'orgueil national dont ce culte était l'aliment ; et c'était en cela que consistait essentiellement la différence avec le sentiment qui avait animé les pères du peuple, les patriarches, dont le cœur était rempli d'une vraie crainte et d'un sincère amour de Dieu. Un abîme séparait ainsi les pères d'avec les descendants, à tel point que les premiers rougissaient à la vue de ces derniers. Comparez Esaïe 29.22 ; 63.16. Cet abîme, le précurseur du Messie doit chercher à le combler en ramenant le cœur des fils à la sincère piété des pères et en faisant ainsi que le regard des pères puisse de nouveau reposer avec satisfaction sur leurs fils. Par ce retour du peuple à ses commencements, il le préparera à une glorieuse fin.

De peur que je ne vienne. Cette expression signifie ici : comme vous ne voudriez pas que je vinsse.

Et que je ne frappe la terre à la façon de l'interdit. C'était ainsi que l'Eternel était venu contre les Cananéens, en les détruisant à la façon de l'interdit, par la main d'Israël lui-même. En exécutant ce châtiment, Israël avait prononcé sa propre sentence, s'il profanait à son tour la terre de Canaan. La première promesse de Dieu envers lui avait été de lui donner ce pays ; la dernière menace est celle de le lui enlever ; et c'est avec cette menace, la plus terrible de toutes, que le Dieu de l'alliance prend congé de son ancien peuple et le laisse désormais marcher à la clarté des révélations qu'il a reçues.

Conclusion sur Malachie

Malachie, le dernier prophète de l'Ancien Testament, se rapproche aussi le plus du Nouveau par les traits suivants :

Nous surprenons pour la première fois, dans le tableau qu'il nous trace du peuple, cette double disposition : une présomptueuse satisfaction de lui-même et un mécontentement amer de la position inférieure où Dieu le laisse comparativement aux puissances païennes qui dominent sur lui. Ce sont là les germes de l'état moral qui se présente à nous plus accentué dans le pharisaïsme du Nouveau Testament.
Le second trait se lie étroitement au premier. Comme Esaïe au chapitre 40 avait fait entendre que la venue glorieuse de Jéhova serait précédée d'un messager qui inviterait le peuple à préparer la voie pour son Dieu, Malachie, à la vue des dispositions du peuple qui l'entoure, annonce d'une manière beaucoup plus précise et positive encore la nécessité d'un précurseur que le Seigneur, au moment de sa venue, enverra devant lui pour préparer le peuple à cette crise dernière et empêcher qu'elle n'aboutisse à sa ruine. Ce sera un nouvel Elie qui s'efforcera de convertir cet Israël extérieurement corrigé, mais intérieurement bouffi d'orgueil. Par cette prophétie le dernier prophète de l'ancienne alliance tend la main au premier prophète de la nouvelle, Jean-Baptiste, par-dessus l'intervalle des quatre siècles qui les séparent.
La conception du Messie lui-même atteint chez Malachie à la hauteur où nous la trouvons réalisée dans le Nouveau Testament. Les deux lignes, l'une ascendante, l'autre descendante, que nous remarquons dans la révélation prophétique relative à la personne du Messie, l'attente d'un fils de David élevé, à l'état divin et celle de Jéhova apparaissant lui-même ici-bas dans sa gloire, ces deux lignes, après s'être constamment rapprochées, s'unissent enfin complètement dans la prophétie de Malachie 3.1 et suivants. Ce que promet cet oracle, trouve son pendant dans l'histoire par la venue de la Parole faite chair.

Conclusion sur les prophètes

Toute la révélation prophétique nous paraît dominée par les trois intuitions suivantes :

Celle du règne de l'Eternel, qui, préparé par le jour ou le jugement de l'Eternel, doit embrasser l'élite sanctifiée de tous les peuples.
Celle du peuple de l'Eternel, choisi de Dieu avec la mission de préparer tous les autres à ce terme glorieux.
Celle de l'Envoyé de l'Eternel ou de l'Eternel lui-même venant comme Messie au sein de son peuple, afin d'y réaliser, et par lui dans le monde, le règne de l'Eternel.

Ces trois intuitions. étroitement liées, ne sont pas exposées systématiquement et d'après une marche suivie, dans les enseignements et les visions prophétiques. Chaque prophète en a contemplé une ou quelques faces, appropriées aux besoins de son temps et à ses propres prédispositions personnelles, sans qu'il soit possible d'établir entre ces révélations successives une gradation bien marquée. Il y a dans l'inspiration prophétique trop de spontanéité, pour que nous puissions en mesurer rationnellement le cours. Ce que nous pouvons constater, c'est le caractère complet et pleinement suffisant de cette révélation préparatoire.

Mais on doit se demander par quelle raison ce jet si puissant, après avoir jailli d'une manière continue et abondante depuis le neuvième jusqu'au cinquième siècle avant notre ère, a tout à coup tari avec Malachie et n'a recommencé à jaillir que quatre siècles plus tard, à l'apparition de Jean-Baptiste. Cette cessation subite et tranchée avait déjà frappé les Juifs. Leur principal historien, Josèphe, déclare que : la succession des prophètes a pris fin avec le règne d'Artaxerces-Longue-Main.
Plusieurs fois, il est fait allusion dans les livres des Maccabées au manque total de prophètes. L'on renvoie la solution de certaines questions au moment où s'élèvera de nouveau un prophète de l'Eternel.

Faudrait-il chercher la cause de ce phénomène dans l'affaiblissement de l'esprit théocratique et dans le déclin du zèle pour la cause de Jéhova ? Mais à aucune autre époque de son histoire le peuple israélite n'a montré un élan monothéiste plus ardent, un enthousiasme national plus victorieux qu'à l'époque des Maccabées. Ou bien l'histoire du peuple avait-elle perdu quelque chose de son mouvement, et l'activité nationale ne trouvait-elle plus d'objet capable d'exciter vivement son intérêt ? Mais c'était au contraire le moment où tombait la barrière qui avait jusque-là comme emprisonné ce peuple. A la suite des conquêtes du peuple grec, Israël envoyait ses colonies commerciales dans le monde entier et commençait à exercer sa suprématie religieuse sur tous les peuples du monde civilisé.

Pourquoi donc plus d'envoyé direct de Dieu, soit pour appuyer le peuple dans sa grande lutte nationale en faveur de la croyance et du culte monothéistes contre le pouvoir politique païen qui avait juré sa ruine, soit pour diriger ce grand mouvement d'extension géographique et de conquête spirituelle qui ouvrait à Israël un tout nouvel avenir ?

Si le prophétisme n'était qu'un phénomène naturel de conscience morale ou d'enthousiasme politique, cette grande question d'histoire religieuse resterait sans réponse.

Il y a un temps pour parler et un temps pour se taire a dit l'Ecclésiaste. Cela est vrai, non pas seulement pour les hommes, mais aussi pour Dieu. Pendant quatre à cinq siècles, l'Eternel avait semé la parole prophétique dans le cœur de son peuple, se levant matin et se couchant tard, selon la belle expression d'un prophète. L'heure était venue où la récolte devait répondre à ces abondantes semailles. Après avoir reçu un riche talent de la main de son Maître, le serviteur était maintenant appelé à le faire valoir.

La tâche qui à cette époque commençait pour Israël, était double : c'était, en premier lieu, de s'approprier la révélation reçue et consignée dans les écrits destinés à en perpétuer la connaissance, et de faire pénétrer cette lumière divine dans sa vie individuelle et collective, C'était, ensuite, de communiquer cette révélation au monde entier, en rendant témoignage devant tous les peuples au Dieu unique et saint et en répandant l'attente de Celui qui devait apporter au monde, avec la révélation définitive, le salut divin.

C'est ainsi que l'arbre, planté, cultivé, arrosé, émondé par les mains de Dieu, devait fructifier pour lui-même et pour le monde. Il n'avait, pour le moment du moins, plus rien à recevoir de nouveau ; il ne lui restait qu'à laisser s'épanouir richement son don.

Cette tâche. Israël l'a-t-il remplie ? Oui et non.

Oui, puisqu'il s'assimila si bien le monothéisme, ce principe de sa vie nationale, que la persécution la plus violente ne parvint pas à l'en détacher. Oui encore, puisque, en se répandant chez tous les peuples, il devint leur apôtre et rassembla partout autour de lui ces groupes de prosélytes croyants qui ouvrirent bientôt la porte du monde des Gentils aux prédicateurs du Christ.

Mais, d'autre part, non, puisque cette double activité à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur fut pour Israël lui-même frappée de stérilité par l'orgueil pharisaïque et par le littéralisme rabbinique qui l'altéra et l'entrava. La tâche providentielle s'accomplit, mais comme en dépit de l'instrument choisi pour l'exécuter ; et lorsque cet agent alla même jusqu'à se constituer en adversaire et que le moyen devint obstacle, il dut subir le rejet tragique, le chérem terrible, dont l'avait menacé le dernier prophète, dans sa dernière révélation (Malachie 4.6). Le porteur de la parole et de l'œuvre divines est tombé ; mais la parole et l'œuvre sont demeurées.

Ainsi s'expliquent et la période prophétique et la période dénuée de prophètes et le réveil enfin de la nouvelle période prophétique. L'histoire de la révélation chrétienne nous présente une marche analogue : d'abord le Christ avec la révélation apostolique ; puis l'Eglise laissée à elle-même sous la direction de l'Esprit, avec la mission de conquérir le monde ; enfin le retour du Christ.

Ici, comme là, le Maître commence par venir et donner ; puis il s'en va pour éprouver, enfin il revient et juge.
