La question est catégorique ; ce oui ou non exige une réponse claire et nette.

Le tribut ou le cens annuel et par tête se pavait à César, c'est-à-dire à l'empereur, qui était alors Tibère.

Les Juifs haïssaient cet impôt, signe de leur asservissement et ils pensaient ne le devoir qu'aux chefs légitimes de la théocratie. Si donc Jésus décidait la question en faveur du tribut, les pharisiens n'auraient pas manqué d'exciter contre lui la haine et le mépris du peuple en le représentant comme un partisan des Romains, si, au contraire, il se prononçait contre l'impôt les hérodiens auraient témoigné contre lui et l'auraient fait condamner par le procureur romain, comme excitant à la révolte.
