Six cent trois mille cinq cent cinquante. C'est exactement le même chiffre que nous avons déjà trouvé, Exode 28.26, ce qui ne permet pas de douter qu'il ne s'agisse du même recensement. De là naît sans doute une difficulté puisque le recensement de l'Exode semble avoir eu lieu avant l'érection du Tabernacle (voir Exode 28.26, l'emploi de la capitation d'un demi-sicle qui en résulta, à la confection des chapiteaux et des socles des piliers du Tabernacle). Nous avons cherché dans les notes sur l'Exode à résoudre cette difficulté. Après le recensement terminé, on calcula le rapport entre le chiffre des recensés et le poids de l'argent spontanément offert pour la construction du Tabernacle ; on obtint ainsi une moyenne d'un demi-sicle : 603 550/301 775 = 0,5 et cette moyenne fut maintenue comme taux de capitation pour tous les recensements subséquents.

Le chiffre de 600 000 hommes de vingt ans et au-dessus suppose une population totale d'environ deux millions d'âmes. Nous avons peine à nous figurer cette masse énorme de peuple parcourant pendant quarante ans, avec ses troupeaux et ses bagages, la presqu'île du Sinaï, qui pouvait être plus fertile qu'aujourd'hui, mais qui n'en était pas moins un grand et affreux désert (Deutéronome 1.19). Nous devons constater cependant que ce chiffre de six cent mille hommes n'est pas fourni par le seul document élohiste qui nous donne les détails de ce recensement ; nous le retrouvons également dans les traditions historiques ; conservées par le document jéhoviste (Exode 12.37 ; Nombres 11.21).

Le chapitre 26 de notre livre nous donne les résultats d'un nouveau recensement qui eut lieu à la fin du voyage dans le désert ; la somme totale diffère à peine de celle qui nous est indiquée dans le recensement actuel (1820 hommes de moins) ; mais dans ces deux statistiques cette somme se répartit entre les tribus d'une manière très inégale, comme on en jugera par le tableau suivant :

Si nous prenons comme moyenne pour une tribu 50 000 hommes (606 000/42), nous remarquons que dans chaque liste il y a six tribus qui dépassent ce chiffre et six qui demeurent au-dessous ; mais la répartition des tribus n'est pas la même : tandis que Manassé et Asser, d'abord inférieurs à la moyenne, la dépassent dans le second recensement, Nephthali et Siméon descendent au nombre des petites tribus ; le recul est surtout sensible pour Siméon qui tombe du troisième au dernier rang parmi les tribus. Juda se maintient à la tête du peuple comme la tribu la plus nombreuse ; parmi les fils de Joseph, Ephraïm diminue d'importance et Manassé s'accroît rapidement. Il est impossible que ces variations ne répondent pas à une réalité historique ; elles ne sauraient provenir du caprice d'un auteur, dont on ne pourrait découvrir l'intention secrète. Et si la proportion entre les diverses tribus doit être envisagée comme historique, il en résulte un fort argument en faveur de la réalité du nombre d'hommes attribué à chacune d'elles, malgré les difficultés qu'il présente.
