La solution est celle-ci : Du sort doit dépendre l'emplacement général des tribus au nord, au milieu ou au midi, tandis que l'étendue du territoire et les frontières précises seront fixées d'après la population. Puis, le sort pouvait encore déterminer la répartition entre les familles du territoire de la tribu. il y eut sans doute par suite de circonstances particulières des déviations de ce mode de partage (ainsi pour les tribus qui s'établirent à l'est du Jourdain et pour lesquelles il n'est pas parlé du sort).
