On a souvent rapporté la première proposition de ce verset à l'établissement de la royauté que Dieu n'avait accordé qu'en le désapprouvant, et la seconde au renversement du trône israélite par l'exil. Dans l'ensemble du passage, le sens que nous donnons, verset 10, est plus naturel.

      14 Moreover Yahweh will raise him up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam. This is day! What? Even now.
      15 For Yahweh will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water; and he will root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the River, because they have made their Asherim, provoking Yahweh to anger.
      16 He will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he has sinned, and with which he has made Israel to sin."

      1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea the son of Elah began to reign in Samaria over Israel for nine years.
      2 He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, yet not as the kings of Israel who were before him.
      3 Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and brought him tribute.
      4 The king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea; for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.
