Bien que Paul soit seul l'auteur de cette lettre, il nomme avec lui son bien-aimé Timothée par un sentiment de délicate affection pour ce dernier, peut-être aussi afin de lui préparer une réception d'autant plus cordiale à Philippes, où il comptait l'envoyer bientôt. (Philippiens 2.19-23) Désirant se placer sur un pied de fraternelle égalité avec celui qui avait été son collaborateur dans la fondation de l'Eglise de Philippes, (Actes 16) Paul ne se donne pas, comme à l'ordinaire, son titre d'apôtre, mais partage avec lui le beau nom de serviteur de Jésus-Christ. (Comparer 1Thessaloniciens 1.1 ; 2Thessaloniciens 1.1 ; Colossiens 1.1)

Saints en Jésus-Christ, c'est-à-dire saints par leur communion avec le Sauveur. (Comparer 1Corinthiens 1.2, note.)

- La lettre est adressée à tous les membres de l'Eglise, qui sont même nommés avant les évêques et les diacres.

C'est ici la seule de ses lettres où l'apôtre désigne une Eglise en énumérant tous les éléments qui la composent : les saints (chrétiens), les évêques (Grec : "surveillants," les mêmes que les anciens ou pasteurs, Actes 20.17,28 ; 1Pierre 5.1) et les diacres (Grec : "serviteurs"), dont l'origine et les fonctions remontent à Actes 6.1 et suivants

Il serait difficile de dire pourquoi Paul désigne ainsi, contre son habitude, l'Eglise de Philippes ; mais ce qui est bien plus important, c'est que ce passage, en nous montrant quelle était, dès les temps apostoliques, la composition d'une Eglise fondée par l'apôtre lui-même, nous fournit une précieuse confirmation de ce que l'on a appelé plus tard la constitution presbytérienne de l'Eglise. (Comparer Actes 11.30 ; 14.23 ; 1.5)

Et toutefois, bien que Paul nomme ici ceux qui exercent des fonctions très honorables à ses yeux, il s'adresse avant tout au peuple de l'Eglise.

Les Philippiens manifestèrent un intérêt très profond pour l'apôtre Paul.

L'ensemble de cette épître a pour but d’affermir la foi des chrétiens de Philippes, de les encourager à marcher en conformité avec l'Évangile, de les avertir du danger que représentaient les professeurs du judaïsme, et d'exprimer de la gratitude pour leur générosité chrétienne.

Cette épître est la seule, parmi celles écrites par l’apôtre Paul, dans laquelle on ne trouve aucun réel reproche. Une recommandation et une confiance totales, de la part de Paul envers les Philippiens, se retrouvent dans chaque partie de cette lettre ; ces derniers sont l'objet d'une affection particulière, que tout lecteur attentif peut percevoir.

* L'apôtre, par la prière, exprime sa gratitude, pour l’œuvre fructueuse de la Grâce, opérée chez les Philippiens. (Philippiens 1:1-7) Il leur exprime son affection, et prie pour eux. (Philippiens 1:8-11) Il les fortifie afin qu'ils ne soient pas abattus par ses propres souffrances. (Philippiens 1:12-20) Paul, dans sa vie, comme par sa mort, se préparait à glorifier Christ. (Philippiens 1:21-26) Exhortations au zèle et à la constance à professer l'Évangile. (Philippiens 1:27-30)

Philippiens 1:1-7 Le grand honneur des serviteurs de Dieu les plus éminents, est d'être à la disposition de ce Dernier.

Ceux qui ne vivent pas véritablement dans la sainteté ici-bas, ne seront jamais des saints dans le ciel. Hors de Christ, les saints les meilleurs ne sont que des pécheurs, incapables de se présenter dignement devant Dieu.

Il n'y a pas de paix sans la Grâce. La paix intérieure est l’objet d'une faveur divine. La Grâce et la Paix du cœur ne proviennent que de Dieu, notre Père : Il est la source et l'origine de toutes nos bénédictions !

L'apôtre n'a pas constaté à Philippes tout le résultat qu'il escomptait trouver ; il ne vit en particulier que peu de fruits relatifs à son précédent travail ; cependant, la joie émane de lui, au souvenir de cette église.

Nous devons remercier notre Dieu pour les grâces et les consolations qu’Il nous adresse et pour les dons qui nous sont offerts par nos frères spirituels : lorsque nous recevons de tels bienfaits, Dieu en reçoit toute la gloire !

L'œuvre de la Grâce ne sera jamais achevée tant que Jésus-Christ ne sera pas réapparu ici-bas. Nous pouvons avoir confiance que Dieu accomplira toujours Son œuvre merveilleuse dans chaque âme, là où la régénération a déjà vraiment commencé à opérer ; ne plaçons pas notre confiance dans les vaines apparences extérieures, basons-nous plutôt sur ce qui mène à la sainteté.

Ceux qui, dans leur ministère spirituel, bénéficient de nombreux bienfaits, réjouissent le cœur de ceux qui les ont amenés au Seigneur. Le fait de souffrir ensemble, pour la cause de Dieu, resserre les liens mutuels.
