Ou bien : "Les choses contraires, qui diffèrent." (Romains 2.18)

Le mot grec a les deux sens, qui, dans la pratique, se réduisent à un seul ; car, avoir le discernement de ce qui est bien, conforme à la vérité et à la volonté de Dieu, (Romains 12.2) c'est aussi discerner ce qui y est opposé, soit dans la doctrine, soit dans la vie.

- Rien de plus rare parmi les chrétiens que ce discernement ! Aussi devraient-ils sentir le besoin d'adresser sans cesse à Dieu, chacun pour soi et les uns pour les autres, la prière de l'apôtre.

Tel sera le fruit du discernement. Purs ne signifie pas seulement, dans ce verset, exempts de souillure, mais sincères, sans alliage. (Cet adjectif ne se lit qu'ici et 2Pierre 3.1, mais le substantif de la même racine se retrouve entre autres dans 2Corinthiens 1.12 ; voir à ce passage la note qui en indique le sens étymologique.)

- Le mot rendu ici par sans achoppement, faux pas, chute, peut avoir un sens passif, se rapportant à nous-mêmes : sans broncher, ni tomber ; ou un sens actif : sans causer de scandale et être pour d'autres une occasion de chute.

- Toujours l'apôtre dirige sa pensée vers ce dernier terme, le jour de Christ, (verset 6) c'est-à-dire le grand jour de son apparition. (Comparer Philippiens 1.6 ; 2.16 ; Romains 2.5,16 ; 1Corinthiens 1.8 ; 5.5 ; 2Corinthiens 1.14 ; Ephésiens 4.30 ; 2Thessaloniciens 1.10 ; 2Timothée 1.12, etc.)
