  1 Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the foreigners of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word."
  
  2 The word of Yahweh came to him, saying,
  
  3 "Go away from here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.
  
  4 It shall be, that you shall drink of the brook. I have commanded the ravens to feed you there."
  
  5 So he went and did according to the word of Yahweh; for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.
  
  6 The ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.
  
  7 It happened after a while, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
  
  8 The word of Yahweh came to him, saying,
  
  9 "Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you."
  
  10 So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, "Please get me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink."
  
  11 As she was going to get it, he called to her, and said, "Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand."
  
  12 She said, "As Yahweh your God lives, I don't have a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the jar. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die."
  
  13 Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go and do as you have said; but make me of it a little cake first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son.
  
  14 For thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, 'The jar of meal shall not empty, neither shall the jar of oil fail, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the earth.'"
  
  15 She went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, ate many days.
  
  16 The jar of meal didn't empty, neither did the jar of oil fail, according to the word of Yahweh, which he spoke by Elijah.
  
  17 It happened after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so severe, that there was no breath left in him.
  
  18 She said to Elijah, "What have I to do with you, you man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son!"
  
  19 He said to her, "Give me your son." He took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the room where he stayed, and laid him on his own bed.
  
  20 He cried to Yahweh, and said, "Yahweh my God, have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I stay, by killing her son?"
  
  21 He stretched himself on the child three times, and cried to Yahweh, and said, "Yahweh my God, please let this child's soul come into him again."
  
  22 Yahweh listened to the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.
  
  23 Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the room into the house, and delivered him to his mother; and Elijah said, "Behold, your son lives."
  
  24 The woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of Yahweh in your mouth is truth."

  1 It happened after many days, that the word of Yahweh came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth."
  
  2 Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.
  
  3 Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Yahweh greatly:
  
  4 for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Yahweh, that Obadiah took one hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
  
  5 Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land, to all the springs of water, and to all the brooks. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we not lose all the animals."
  
  6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
  
  7 As Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, "Is it you, my lord Elijah?"
  
  8 He answered him, "It is I. Go, tell your lord, 'Behold, Elijah is here!'"
  
  9 He said, "Wherein have I sinned, that you would deliver your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?
  
  10 As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom, where my lord has not sent to seek you. When they said, 'He is not here,' he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they didn't find you.
  
  11 Now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here."'
  
  12 It will happen, as soon as I am gone from you, that the Spirit of Yahweh will carry you I don't know where; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he can't find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared Yahweh from my youth.
  
  13 Wasn't it told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid one hundred men of Yahweh's prophets with fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
  
  14 Now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here";' and he will kill me."
  
  15 Elijah said, "As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today."
  
  16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
  
  17 It happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?"
  
  18 He answered, "I have not troubled Israel; but you, and your father's house, in that you have forsaken the commandments of Yahweh, and you have followed the Baals.
  
  19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and four hundred fifty of the prophets of Baal, and four hundred of the prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table."
  
  20 So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel.
  
  21 Elijah came near to all the people, and said, "How long will you waver between the two sides? If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him." The people answered him not a word.
  
  22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I, even I only, am left a prophet of Yahweh; but Baal's prophets are four hundred fifty men.
  
  23 Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.
  
  24 You call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh. The God who answers by fire, let him be God." All the people answered, "It is well said."
  
  25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first; for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it."
  
  26 They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any who answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.
  
  27 It happened at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, "Cry aloud; for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened."
  
  28 They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.
  
  29 It was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the offering; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any who regarded.
  
  30 Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me"; and all the people came near to him. He repaired the altar of Yahweh that was thrown down.
  
  31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Yahweh came, saying, "Israel shall be your name."
  
  32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh. He made a trench around the altar, large enough to contain two measures of seed.
  
  33 He put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, "Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering, and on the wood."
  
  34 He said, "Do it a second time"; and they did it the second time. He said, "Do it a third time"; and they did it the third time.
  
  35 The water ran around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.
  
  36 It happened at the time of the offering of the offering, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, "Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
  
  37 Hear me, Yahweh, hear me, that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again."
  
  38 Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
  
  39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, "Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!"
  
  40 Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal! Don't let one of them escape!" They seized them. Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.
  
  41 Elijah said to Ahab, "Get up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain."
  
  42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.
  
  43 He said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." He went up, and looked, and said, "There is nothing." He said, "Go again" seven times.
  
  44 It happened at the seventh time, that he said, "Behold, a small cloud, like a man's hand, is rising out of the sea." He said, "Go up, tell Ahab, 'Get ready and go down, so that the rain doesn't stop you.'"
  
  45 It happened in a little while, that the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
  
  46 The hand of Yahweh was on Elijah; and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

  1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
  
  2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I don't make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time!"
  
  3 When he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
  
  4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers."
  
  5 He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise and eat!"
  
  6 He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again.
  
  7 The angel of Yahweh came again the second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you."
  
  8 He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the Mount of God.
  
  9 He came there to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, the word of Yahweh came to him, and he said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
  
  10 He said, "I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."
  
  11 He said, "Go out, and stand on the mountain before Yahweh." Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake.
  
  12 After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
  
  13 It was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
  
  14 He said, "I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."
  
  15 Yahweh said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.
  
  16 You shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place.
  
  17 It shall happen, that he who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and he who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill.
  
  18 Yet will I leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him."
  
  19 So he departed there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed over to him, and cast his mantle on him.
  
  20 He left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, "Let me please kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." He said to him, "Go back again; for what have I done to you?"
  
  21 He returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and killed them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they ate. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and served him.

  1 It happened after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.
  
  2 Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, "Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near to my house; and I will give you for it a better vineyard than it. Or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its worth in money."
  
  3 Naboth said to Ahab, "May Yahweh forbid me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you!"
  
  4 Ahab came into his house sullen and angry because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." He laid himself down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
  
  5 But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said to him, "Why is your spirit so sad, that you eat no bread?"
  
  6 He said to her, "Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite, and said to him, 'Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it pleases you, I will give you another vineyard for it.' He answered, 'I will not give you my vineyard.'"
  
  7 Jezebel his wife said to him, "Do you now govern the kingdom of Israel? Arise, and eat bread, and let your heart be merry. I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite."
  
  8 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters to the elders and to the nobles who were in his city, who lived with Naboth.
  
  9 She wrote in the letters, saying, "Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.
  
  10 Set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them testify against him, saying, 'You cursed God and the king!' Then carry him out, and stone him to death."
  
  11 The men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent to them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent to them.
  
  12 They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.
  
  13 The two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him. The base fellows testified against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king!" Then they carried him out of the city, and stoned him to death with stones.
  
  14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, "Naboth has been stoned, and is dead."
  
  15 It happened, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, "Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead."
  
  16 It happened, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
  
  17 The word of Yahweh came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
  
  18 "Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who dwells in Samaria. Behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to take possession of it.
  
  19 You shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says Yahweh, "Have you killed and also taken possession?"' You shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says Yahweh, "In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs will lick your blood, even yours."'"
  
  20 Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, my enemy?" He answered, "I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do that which is evil in the sight of Yahweh.
  
  21 Behold, I will bring evil on you, and will utterly sweep you away and will cut off from Ahab everyone who urinates against a wall, and him who is shut up and him who is left at large in Israel.
  
  22 I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah for the provocation with which you have provoked me to anger, and have made Israel to sin."
  
  23 Yahweh also spoke of Jezebel, saying, "The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel.
  
  24 The dogs will eat he who dies of Ahab in the city; and the birds of the sky will eat he who dies in the field."
  
  25 But there was none like Ahab, who sold himself to do that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.
  
  26 He did very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites did, whom Yahweh cast out before the children of Israel.
  
  27 It happened, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.
  
  28 The word of Yahweh came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
  
  29 "See how Ahab humbles himself before me? Because he humbles himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but in his son's days will I bring the evil on his house."

  1 Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.
  
  2 Ahaziah fell down through the lattice in his upper room that was in Samaria, and was sick. So he sent messengers, and said to them, "Go, inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover of this sickness."
  
  3 But the angel of Yahweh said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and tell them, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel, that you go to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron?
  
  4 Now therefore thus says Yahweh, "You shall not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but shall surely die."'" Elijah departed.
  
  5 The messengers returned to him, and he said to them, "Why is it that you have returned?"
  
  6 They said to him, "A man came up to meet us, and said to us, 'Go, return to the king who sent you, and tell him, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel, that you send to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but shall surely die.'"'"
  
  7 He said to them, "What kind of man was he who came up to meet you, and told you these words?"
  
  8 They answered him, "He was a hairy man, and wearing a leather belt around his waist." He said, "It is Elijah the Tishbite."
  
  9 Then the king sent a captain of fifty with his fifty to him. He went up to him; and behold, he was sitting on the top of the hill. He said to him, "Man of God, the king has said, 'Come down!'"
  
  10 Elijah answered to the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky, and consume you and your fifty!" Fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty.
  
  11 Again he sent to him another captain of fifty and his fifty. He answered him, "Man of God, the king has said, 'Come down quickly!'"
  
  12 Elijah answered them, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky, and consume you and your fifty!" The fire of God came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty.
  
  13 Again he sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. The third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and begged him, and said to him, "Man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty your servants, be precious in your sight.
  
  14 Behold, fire came down from the sky, and consumed the two former captains of fifty with their fifties. But now let my life be precious in your sight."
  
  15 The angel of Yahweh said to Elijah, "Go down with him. Don't be afraid of him." He arose, and went down with him to the king.
  
  16 He said to him, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but shall surely die.'"
  
  17 So he died according to the word of Yahweh which Elijah had spoken. Jehoram began to reign in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son.
  
  18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, aren't they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

  1 Elie le Thishbite, l'un des habitants de Galaad, dit à Achab : « L'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, dont je suis le serviteur est vivant ! Il n'y aura ces années-ci pas de rosée ni de pluie, sauf sur ma parole. »
  
  2 Puis la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Elie :
  
  3 « Pars d'ici en direction de l'est et cache-toi près du torrent de Kerith, qui se trouve en face du Jourdain.
  
  4 Tu boiras de l'eau du torrent et c’est aux corbeaux que j'ai ordonné de te nourrir là. »
  
  5 Elie partit et se conforma à la parole de l'Eternel : il alla s’installer près du torrent de Kerith, qui se trouve en face du Jourdain.
  
  6 Les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la viande matin et soir, et il buvait de l'eau du torrent.
  
  7 Mais au bout d'un certain temps, le torrent fut à sec, car il n'était pas tombé de pluie dans le pays.
  
  8 Alors la parole de l'Eternel lui fut adressée :
  
  9 « Lève-toi, va à Sarepta, qui appartient au territoire de Sidon, et installe-toi là. J'y ai ordonné à une femme veuve de te nourrir. »
  
  10 Il se leva et partit à Sarepta. En arrivant à l'entrée de la ville, il y vit une femme veuve en train de ramasser du bois. Il l'appela et dit : « Je t’en prie, va me chercher un peu d'eau dans une cruche, afin que je boive. »
  
  11 Et elle alla en chercher. Il l'appela de nouveau et dit : « Je t’en prie, apporte-moi un morceau de pain dans ta main. »
  
  12 Et elle répondit : « L'Eternel, ton Dieu, est vivant ! Je n'ai rien de cuit, je n'ai qu'une poignée de farine dans un pot et un peu d'huile dans une cruche. Je suis en train de ramasser deux morceaux de bois, puis je rentrerai et je préparerai cela pour mon fils et pour moi. Nous le mangerons, après quoi nous mourrons. »
  
  13 Elie lui dit : « N’aie pas peur, rentre et fais comme tu l’as dit. Seulement, prépare-moi d'abord avec cela un petit gâteau et apporte-le-moi. Ensuite, tu en feras pour ton fils et pour toi.
  
  14 En effet, voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël : ‘La farine qui est dans le pot ne manquera pas et l'huile qui est dans la cruche ne diminuera pas, jusqu'au jour où l'Eternel fera tomber de la pluie sur le pays.’ »
  
  15 Elle partit et se conforma à la parole d'Elie. Et pendant longtemps elle eut de quoi manger, ainsi que sa famille et Elie.
  
  16 La farine qui était dans le pot ne manqua pas et l'huile qui était dans la cruche ne diminua pas, conformément à la parole que l'Eternel avait prononcée par l’intermédiaire d’Elie.
  
  17 Après ces événements, le fils de cette maîtresse de maison tomba malade. Sa maladie fut si violente qu'il cessa de respirer.
  
  18 La femme dit alors à Elie : « Que me veux-tu, homme de Dieu ? Es-tu venu chez moi pour rappeler le souvenir de ma faute et pour faire mourir mon fils ? »
  
  19 Il lui répondit : « Donne-moi ton fils. » Et il le prit des bras de la femme, le monta dans la chambre à l'étage où il logeait et le coucha sur son lit.
  
  20 Puis il fit appel à l'Eternel et dit : « Eternel, mon Dieu, est-ce que tu vas faire du mal, au point de faire mourir son fils, même à cette veuve qui m’a accueilli chez elle ? »
  
  21 Puis il s'étendit trois fois sur l'enfant, fit appel à l'Eternel et dit : « Eternel, mon Dieu, je t'en prie, que l'âme de cet enfant revienne en lui ! »
  
  22 L'Eternel écouta Elie : l'âme de l'enfant revint en lui et il retrouva la vie.
  
  23 Elie prit l'enfant, le descendit de la chambre jusque dans la maison et le donna à sa mère en lui disant : « Vois, ton fils est vivant. »
  
  24 La femme dit alors à Elie : « Je reconnais maintenant que tu es un homme de Dieu et que la parole de l'Eternel dans ta bouche est vraie. »

  1 Bien des jours passèrent et, au bout de 3 ans, la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Elie : « Va te présenter devant Achab et je ferai tomber de la pluie sur le pays. »
  
  2 Elie partit pour se présenter devant Achab. La famine était grande à Samarie.
  
  3 Quant à Achab, il fit appeler Abdias, le chef de son palais. Or, Abdias craignait beaucoup l'Eternel ;
  
  4 lorsque Jézabel avait exterminé les prophètes de l'Eternel, il avait pris 100 prophètes et les avait cachés par groupes de 50 dans des grottes, où il les avait nourris de pain et d'eau.
  
  5 Achab dit à Abdias : « Va vers toutes les sources d'eau et vers tous les torrents du pays. Peut-être trouveras-tu de l'herbe. Ainsi, nous pourrons garder les chevaux et les mulets en vie, et nous n'aurons pas besoin d'abattre du bétail. »
  
  6 Ils se partagèrent le pays à parcourir ; Achab partit seul par un chemin, et Abdias par un autre.
  
  7 Abdias était en route quand Elie le rencontra. L'ayant reconnu, Abdias tomba le visage contre terre et dit : « Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Elie ? »
  
  8 Il lui répondit : « C'est bien moi. Va dire à ton seigneur : ‘Voici Elie !’ »
  
  9 Abdias dit : « Quel péché ai-je commis, pour que tu me livres, moi ton serviteur, entre les mains d'Achab ? Il me fera mourir !
  
  10 L'Eternel est vivant ! Il n'y a aucune nation ni aucun royaume où mon seigneur n'ait envoyé quelqu'un à ta recherche. Quand on disait que tu n'y étais pas, il faisait jurer le royaume et la nation que l'on ne t'avait pas trouvé.
  
  11 Et maintenant, toi tu dis : ‘Va dire à ton seigneur : Voici Elie !’
  
  12 Lorsque je t'aurai quitté, l'Esprit de l'Eternel te transportera je ne sais où. Je serai allé informer Achab, mais comme il ne te trouvera pas, il me tuera. Cependant, moi ton serviteur, je crains l'Eternel depuis ma jeunesse.
  
  13 N'a-t-on pas dit à mon seigneur ce que j'ai fait quand Jézabel a tué les prophètes de l'Eternel ? J'ai caché 100 prophètes de l'Eternel par groupes de 50 dans des grottes et je les ai nourris de pain et d'eau.
  
  14 Et maintenant, toi tu dis : ‘Va dire à ton seigneur : Voici Elie !’Il me tuera. »
  
  15 Elie répondit : « L'Eternel, le maître de l’univers, dont je suis le serviteur est vivant ! Aujourd'hui je vais me présenter devant Achab. »
  
  16 Abdias alla à la rencontre d'Achab et l'informa de la situation. Achab partit alors à la rencontre d'Elie.
  
  17 A peine l’eut-il aperçu qu'il lui dit : « Est-ce toi qui jettes le trouble en Israël ? »
  
  18 Elie répondit : « Je ne trouble pas Israël. Au contraire, c'est toi et ta famille qui le faites, puisque vous avez abandonné les commandements de l'Eternel et que tu as suivi les Baals.
  
  19 Fais maintenant rassembler tout Israël vers moi, au mont Carmel, avec les 450 prophètes de Baal et les 400 prophètes d'Astarté qui mangent à la table de Jézabel. »
  
  20 Achab envoya des messagers vers tous les Israélites et rassembla les prophètes au mont Carmel.
  
  21 Alors Elie s'approcha de tout le peuple et dit : « Jusqu'à quand aurez-vous un comportement boiteux ? Si c’est l'Eternel qui est Dieu, suivez-le ! Si c'est Baal, suivez-le ! » Le peuple ne lui répondit rien.
  
  22 Elie dit au peuple : « Je suis resté le seul prophète de l'Eternel, et il y a 450 prophètes de Baal.
  
  23 Que l'on nous donne deux taureaux. Qu'ils choisissent pour eux l'un des taureaux, le coupent en morceaux et le placent sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu. De mon côté, je préparerai l'autre taureau et je le placerai sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu.
  
  24 Puis faites appel au nom de votre dieu. Quant à moi, je ferai appel au nom de l'Eternel. Le dieu qui répondra par le feu, c'est celui-là qui sera Dieu. » Tout le peuple répondit : « C'est bien ! »
  
  25 Elie dit aux prophètes de Baal : « Choisissez pour vous l'un des taureaux et préparez-le les premiers, puisque vous êtes les plus nombreux. Ensuite, faites appel au nom de votre dieu, mais n’allumez pas le feu. »
  
  26 Ils prirent le taureau qu'on leur donna et le préparèrent. Puis ils firent appel au nom de Baal depuis le matin jusqu'à midi en disant : « Baal, réponds-nous ! » Mais il n'y eut ni voix ni réponse, même s’ils sautaient devant l'autel qu'ils avaient érigé.
  
  27 A midi, Elie se moqua d'eux et dit : « Criez à haute voix ! Puisqu'il est dieu, il doit être en train de penser à quelque chose, ou bien il est occupé, ou encore en voyage. Peut-être même qu'il dort et qu’il va se réveiller. »
  
  28 Ils crièrent à haute voix et, conformément à leur coutume, ils se firent des incisions avec des épées et avec des lances jusqu'à ce que le sang coule sur eux.
  
  29 Lorsque midi fut passé, ils prophétisèrent jusqu'au moment de la présentation de l'offrande. Mais il n'y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni signe d'attention.
  
  30 Elie dit alors à tout le peuple : « Approchez-vous de moi ! » Tout le peuple s'approcha de lui. Elie répara l'autel de l'Eternel, qui avait été démoli.
  
  31 Il prit 12 pierres, d'après le nombre des tribus issues des fils de Jacob, l’homme auquel l'Eternel avait dit : « Tu t’appelleras Israël. »
  
  32 Avec ces pierres, il reconstruisit un autel au nom de l'Eternel. Il fit autour de l'autel un fossé pouvant contenir une quinzaine de litres.
  
  33 Il arrangea le bois, coupa le taureau en morceaux et le plaça sur le bois.
  
  34 Puis il dit : « Remplissez d'eau quatre cruches et versez-les sur l'holocauste et sur le bois. » Il dit : « Faites-le une deuxième fois. » Et ils le firent une deuxième fois. Il dit : « Faites-le une troisième fois. » Et ils le firent une troisième fois.
  
  35 L'eau coula tout autour de l'autel et l'on remplit aussi d'eau le fossé.
  
  36 Au moment de la présentation de l'offrande, le prophète Elie s'avança et dit : « Eternel, Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël ! Que l'on sache aujourd'hui que c’est toi qui es Dieu en Israël et que moi, je suis ton serviteur et j'ai fait tout cela sur ton ordre !
  
  37 Réponds-moi, Eternel, réponds-moi, afin que ce peuple reconnaisse que c'est toi, Eternel, qui es Dieu, et que c'est toi qui ramènes leur cœur vers toi ! »
  
  38 Le feu de l'Eternel tomba alors. Il brûla l'holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et il avala l'eau qui était dans le fossé.
  
  39 Quand ils virent cela, tous les membres du peuple tombèrent le visage contre terre et dirent : « C'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu ! C'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu ! »
  
  40 « Emparez-vous des prophètes de Baal, leur dit Elie. Qu'aucun d'eux ne puisse s’échapper ! » Et ils s’emparèrent d’eux. Elie les fit descendre au bord du torrent du Kison, où il les égorgea.
  
  41 Puis Elie dit à Achab : « Monte manger et boire, car il y a un grondement annonciateur de pluie. »
  
  42 Achab monta manger et boire. Quant à Elie, il monta au sommet du Carmel et, se penchant jusqu’à terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux.
  
  43 Puis il dit à son serviteur : « Monte regarder du côté de la mer. » Le serviteur monta, regarda et dit : « Il n'y a rien. » Elie dit sept fois : « Retournes-y. »
  
  44 La septième fois, le serviteur dit : « Voici un petit nuage qui s'élève au-dessus de la mer et qui est de la taille d’une paume de main. » Elie dit : « Monte dire à Achab : ‘Attelle ton char et descends, afin que la pluie ne puisse pas te retenir.’ »
  
  45 En quelques instants, le ciel devint noir de nuages, le vent souffla et il y eut une forte pluie. Achab monta sur son char et partit pour Jizreel.
  
  46 La main de l'Eternel reposa sur Elie qui noua sa ceinture et courut devant Achab jusqu'à l'entrée de Jizreel.

  1 Achab rapporta à Jézabel tout ce qu'avait fait Elie et la manière dont il avait tué par l'épée tous les prophètes.
  
  2 Jézabel envoya alors un messager à Elie pour lui dire : « Que les dieux me traitent avec la plus grande sévérité, si demain, à la même heure, je ne te fais pas ce que tu leur as fait ! »
  
  3 Voyant cela, Elie se leva et partit pour sauver sa vie. Il arriva à Beer-Shéba, une ville qui appartient à Juda, et il y laissa son serviteur.
  
  4 Quant à lui, il marcha toute une journée dans le désert, puis il s'assit sous un genêt et demanda la mort en disant : « C'est assez ! Maintenant, Eternel, prends-moi la vie, car je ne suis pas meilleur que mes ancêtres. »
  
  5 Il se coucha et s'endormit sous un genêt. Et voici qu’un ange le toucha et lui dit : « Lève-toi et mange. »
  
  6 Elie regarda et il vit à son chevet un gâteau cuit sur des pierres chauffées ainsi qu’une cruche d'eau. Il mangea et but, puis se recoucha.
  
  7 L'ange de l'Eternel vint une deuxième fois, le toucha et dit : « Lève-toi et mange, car le chemin est trop long pour toi. »
  
  8 Il se leva, mangea et but. Puis, avec la force que lui donna cette nourriture, il marcha 40 jours et 40 nuits jusqu'à la montagne de Dieu, jusqu’à Horeb.
  
  9 Là, il entra dans la grotte et y passa la nuit. Or, la parole de l'Eternel lui fut adressée : « Que fais-tu ici, Elie ? »
  
  10 Il répondit : « J'ai déployé tout mon zèle pour l'Eternel, le Dieu de l’univers. En effet, les Israélites ont abandonné ton alliance, *ils ont démoli tes autels et ont tué tes prophètes par l'épée. Je suis resté, moi seul, et ils cherchent à m'enlever la vie. »
  
  11 L'Eternel dit : « Sors et tiens-toi sur la montagne devant l'Eternel, et l’Eternel va passer ! » Devant l'Eternel, il y eut un vent fort et violent qui déchirait les montagnes et brisait les rochers ; l'Eternel n'était pas dans le vent. Après le vent, il y eut un tremblement de terre ; l'Eternel n'était pas dans le tremblement de terre.
  
  12 Après le tremblement de terre, il y eut un feu ; l'Eternel n'était pas dans le feu. Après le feu, il y eut un murmure doux et léger.
  
  13 Quand il l'entendit, Elie s'enveloppa le visage de son manteau, sortit et se tint à l'entrée de la grotte. Et voici qu’une voix lui fit entendre ces paroles : « Que fais-tu ici, Elie ? »
  
  14 Il répondit : « J'ai déployé tout mon zèle pour l'Eternel, le Dieu de l’univers. En effet, les Israélites ont abandonné ton alliance, ils ont démoli tes autels et ont tué tes prophètes par l'épée. Je suis resté, moi seul, et ils cherchent à m'enlever la vie. »
  
  15 L'Eternel lui dit : « Vas-y, poursuis ton chemin dans le désert jusqu'à Damas. Une fois arrivé là-bas, tu consacreras par onction Hazaël comme roi de Syrie.
  
  16 Tu consacreras aussi par onction Jéhu, le petit-fils de Nimshi, comme roi d'Israël et tu consacreras par onction Elisée, le fils de Shaphath, d'Abel-Mehola, comme prophète à ta place.
  
  17 Celui qui échappera à l'épée de Hazaël, Jéhu le fera mourir, et celui qui échappera à l'épée de Jéhu, Elisée le fera mourir.
  
  18 Mais *je vais laisser en Israël 7000 hommes. Ce sont tous ceux qui n'ont pas plié les genoux devant Baal et dont la bouche ne l'a pas embrassé. »
  
  19 Elie partit de là et il trouva Elisée, le fils de Shaphath, en train de labourer. Il y avait devant lui douze paires de bœufs et lui-même se tenait près de la douzième. Elie s'approcha de lui et jeta son manteau sur lui.
  
  20 Elisée abandonna ses bœufs et courut après Elie. Il lui dit : « Laisse-moi embrasser mon père et ma mère et je te suivrai. » Elie lui répondit : « Vas-y et reviens. Pense en effet à ce que je t'ai fait. »
  
  21 Après s'être éloigné d'Elie, Elisée prit une paire de bœufs, qu'il offrit en sacrifice. Avec le bois de leur attelage, il fit cuire leur viande et la donna à manger au peuple. Puis il se leva, suivit Elie et fut à son service.

  1 Après ces événements, voici ce qui arriva. Un certain Naboth, de Jizreel, avait une vigne à Jizreel, à côté du palais d'Achab, roi de Samarie.
  
  2 Achab ordonna à Naboth : « Donne-moi ta vigne, pour que j'en fasse un jardin potager, car elle est tout près de ma maison. Je te donnerai à la place une vigne meilleure ou, si tu préfères, je te paierai sa valeur en argent. »
  
  3 Mais Naboth répondit à Achab : « Que l'Eternel me garde de te donner l'héritage de mes ancêtres ! »
  
  4 Achab rentra chez lui, triste et irrité, à cause de cette réponse que lui avait faite Naboth de Jizreel : « Je ne te donnerai pas l'héritage de mes ancêtres ! » Il se coucha sur son lit, tourna son visage contre le mur et ne mangea rien.
  
  5 Sa femme Jézabel vint le trouver et lui dit : « Pourquoi es-tu triste et ne manges-tu pas ? »
  
  6 Il lui répondit : « C’est parce que j'ai parlé à Naboth de Jizreel et que je lui ai dit : ‘Donne-moi ta vigne pour de l'argent ou, si tu veux, je te donnerai une autre vigne à la place.’Mais il a répondu : ‘Je ne te donnerai pas ma vigne !’ »
  
  7 Alors sa femme Jézabel lui dit : « Est-ce bien toi maintenant qui es roi d’Israël ? Lève-toi, prends de la nourriture et que ton cœur se réjouisse. C’est moi qui vais te donner la vigne de Naboth de Jizreel. »
  
  8 Elle écrivit alors, au nom d'Achab, des lettres qu'elle marqua de l’empreinte du roi, puis elle les envoya aux anciens et aux magistrats qui étaient concitoyens de Naboth.
  
  9 Voici ce qu'elle écrivit dans ces lettres : « Proclamez un jeûne. Placez Naboth au premier rang du peuple
  
  10 et mettez en face de lui deux vauriens qui témoigneront contre lui en prétendant qu’il a maudit Dieu et le roi. Puis conduisez-le à l’extérieur de la ville et lapidez-le jusqu’à ce qu’il meure. »
  
  11 Les hommes de la ville de Naboth, les anciens et les magistrats qui étaient ses concitoyens, agirent comme Jézabel le leur avait fait dire. Ils se conformèrent à ce qui était écrit dans les lettres qu'elle leur avait envoyées.
  
  12 Ils proclamèrent un jeûne et placèrent Naboth au premier rang du peuple ;
  
  13 les deux vauriens vinrent se mettre en face de lui et témoignèrent contre Naboth devant le peuple en prétendant qu’il avait maudit Dieu et le roi. Puis ils le conduisirent à l’extérieur de la ville et le lapidèrent jusqu’à ce qu’il meure.
  
  14 Ils firent alors dire à Jézabel : « Naboth a été lapidé et il est mort. »
  
  15 Lorsque Jézabel apprit la nouvelle, elle dit à Achab : « Lève-toi, prends possession de la vigne de Naboth de Jizreel, qui avait refusé de te la céder pour de l'argent. En effet, Naboth n'est plus en vie, il est mort. »
  
  16 Dès qu’il apprit que Naboth de Jizreel était mort, Achab se leva pour descendre à sa vigne afin d'en prendre possession.
  
  17 Alors la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Elie le Thishbite :
  
  18 « Lève-toi, descends à la rencontre d'Achab, le roi d'Israël, qui se trouve à Samarie. Le voilà dans la vigne de Naboth, où il est descendu pour en prendre possession.
  
  19 Tu lui annonceras : ‘Voici ce que dit l'Eternel : N'es-tu pas un assassin et un voleur ?’Et tu ajouteras : ‘Voici ce que dit l'Eternel : A l'endroit même où les chiens ont léché le sang de Naboth, ils lécheront aussi ton propre sang.’ »
  
  20 Achab dit à Elie : « Tu m'as donc retrouvé, mon ennemi ? » Il répondit : « Je t'ai retrouvé parce que tu t'es toi-même vendu pour faire ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel.
  
  21 Je vais faire venir le malheur sur toi. Je vais te balayer, je vais exterminer tout homme qui appartient à Achab, qu’il soit esclave ou libre en Israël.
  
  22 Je vais rendre ta famille pareille à celle de Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, et à celle de Baesha, fils d'Achija, parce que tu m'as irrité et que tu as fais pécher Israël.
  
  23 L'Eternel parle aussi à Jézabel. Il dit : ‘Les chiens mangeront Jézabel près du rempart de Jizreel.
  
  24 Le membre de la famille d'Achab qui mourra dans la ville sera mangé par les chiens, et celui qui mourra dans les champs sera mangé par les oiseaux.’ »
  
  25 Il n'y a eu personne qui se soit lui-même vendu comme Achab pour faire ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel, et sa femme Jézabel l'y poussait.
  
  26 Il a agi de la manière la plus abominable en suivant les idoles, comme le faisaient les Amoréens, ces peuples que l'Eternel avait dépossédés devant les Israélites.
  
  27 Après avoir entendu les paroles d'Elie, Achab déchira ses habits, se couvrit d’un sac à même la peau et jeûna. Il dormait avec ce sac et il marchait tout lentement.
  
  28 La parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Elie le Thishbite :
  
  29 « As-tu vu qu’Achab s'est humilié devant moi ? Eh bien, parce qu'il s'est humilié devant moi, je ne ferai pas venir le malheur durant sa vie. Ce sera pendant la vie de son fils que je ferai venir le malheur sur sa famille. »

  1 Les Moabites se révoltèrent contre Israël après la mort d'Achab.
  
  2 Achazia tomba par le treillis de sa chambre à l'étage, à Samarie, et il se blessa gravement. Il fit partir des messagers en leur disant : « Allez consulter Baal-Zebub, le dieu d'Ekron, pour savoir si je guérirai de cette blessure. »
  
  3 Mais l'ange de l'Eternel dit à Elie le Thishbite : « Lève-toi, monte à la rencontre des messagers du roi de Samarie et dis-leur : ‘Est-ce parce qu'il n'y a pas de Dieu en Israël que vous allez consulter Baal-Zebub, le dieu d'Ekron ?
  
  4 C'est pourquoi, voici ce que dit l'Eternel : Tu ne redescendras pas du lit sur lequel tu es monté, car tu mourras.’ » Puis Elie s'en alla.
  
  5 Les messagers retournèrent vers Achazia, qui leur demanda : « Pourquoi revenez-vous ? »
  
  6 Ils lui répondirent : « Un homme est monté à notre rencontre et nous a dit : ‘Allez-y, retournez vers le roi qui vous a envoyés et annoncez-lui : Voici ce que dit l'Eternel : Est-ce parce qu'il n'y a pas de Dieu en Israël que tu envoies consulter Baal-Zebub, le dieu d'Ekron ? C'est pourquoi tu ne redescendras pas du lit sur lequel tu es monté, car tu mourras.’ »
  
  7 Achazia leur demanda : « Quel air avait l'homme qui est monté à votre rencontre et qui vous a dit ces paroles ? »
  
  8 Ils lui répondirent : « C'était un homme avec un vêtement en poil et une ceinture de cuir autour de la taille. » Achazia dit alors : « C'est Elie le Thishbite. »
  
  9 Il envoya vers lui un chef de cinquantaine avec ses 50 hommes. Ce chef monta vers Elie qui était assis au sommet de la montagne. Il lui dit : « Homme de Dieu, le roi te dit : ‘Descends !’ »
  
  10 Elie répondit au chef de cinquantaine : « Si je suis un homme de Dieu, que le feu descende du ciel et te dévore, toi et tes 50 hommes ! » Et le feu descendit du ciel et le dévora, lui et ses 50 hommes.
  
  11 Achazia envoya de nouveau vers lui un chef de cinquantaine avec ses 50 hommes. Ce chef prit la parole et dit à Elie : « Homme de Dieu, voici ce que dit le roi : ‘Dépêche-toi de descendre !’ »
  
  12 Elie leur répondit : « Si je suis un homme de Dieu, que le feu descende du ciel et te dévore, toi et tes 50 hommes ! » Et le feu de Dieu descendit du ciel et le dévora, lui et ses 50 hommes.
  
  13 Achazia envoya encore un troisième chef de cinquantaine avec ses 50 hommes. Ce troisième chef de cinquantaine monta vers Elie et, à son arrivée, il plia les genoux devant lui et lui demanda grâce en disant : « Homme de Dieu, veuille accorder un peu de valeur à ma vie et à celle de ces 50 hommes, tes serviteurs !
  
  14 Le feu est descendu du ciel et a dévoré les deux premiers chefs de cinquantaine et leurs 50 hommes. Mais maintenant, veuille accorder un peu de valeur à ma vie ! »
  
  15 L'ange de l'Eternel dit à Elie : « Descends avec lui, n'aie pas peur de lui ! » Elie se leva et descendit avec ce chef vers le roi.
  
  16 Il lui annonça : « Voici ce que dit l'Eternel : Parce que tu as envoyé des messagers consulter Baal-Zebub, le dieu d'Ekron, comme s'il n'y avait pas, en Israël, de Dieu dont on puisse consulter la parole, tu ne redescendras pas du lit sur lequel tu es monté, car tu mourras. »
  
  17 Achazia mourut, conformément à la parole de l'Eternel prononcée par Elie. Comme il n'avait pas de fils, son frère Joram devint roi à sa place. Cela se passa la deuxième année du règne de Joram, le fils de Josaphat, sur Juda.
  
  18 Le reste des actes d'Achazia, ce qu'il a accompli, cela est décrit dans les annales des rois d'Israël.
