- Esther 1
  
  9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to King Ahasuerus.
  
  10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcass, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
  
  11 to bring Vashti the queen before the king with the royal crown, to show the people and the princes her beauty; for she was beautiful.
  
  12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by the eunuchs. Therefore the king was very angry, and his anger burned in him.
  
  13 Then the king said to the wise men, who knew the times, (for it was the king's custom to consult those who knew law and judgment;
  
  14 and the next to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king's face, and sat first in the kingdom),
  
  15 "What shall we do to the queen Vashti according to law, because she has not done the bidding of the King Ahasuerus by the eunuchs?"
  
  16 Memucan answered before the king and the princes, "Vashti the queen has not done wrong to just the king, but also to all the princes, and to all the people who are in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus.
  
  17 For this deed of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to show contempt for their husbands, when it is reported, 'King Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she didn't come.'
  
  18 Today, the princesses of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen's deed will tell all the king's princes. This will cause much contempt and wrath.
  
  19 "If it please the king, let a royal commandment go from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it cannot be altered, that Vashti may never again come before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate to another who is better than she.
  
  20 When the king's decree which he shall make is published throughout all his kingdom (for it is great), all the wives will give their husbands honor, both great and small."
  
  21 This advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
  
  22 for he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, that every man should rule his own house, speaking in the language of his own people.
  
  Esther 2
  
  1 After these things, when the wrath of King Ahasuerus was pacified, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
  
  2 Then the king's servants who served him said, "Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king.
  
  3 Let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the beautiful young virgins to the citadel of Susa, to the women's house, to the custody of Hegai the king's eunuch, keeper of the women. Let cosmetics be given them;
  
  4 and let the maiden who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti." The thing pleased the king, and he did so.
  
  5 There was a certain Jew in the citadel of Susa, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite,
  
  6 who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives who had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
  
  7 He brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter; for she had neither father nor mother. The maiden was fair and beautiful; and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.
  
  8 So it happened, when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together to the citadel of Susa, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was taken into the king's house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
  
  9 The maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness from him. He quickly gave her cosmetics and her portions of food, and the seven choice maidens who were to be given her out of the king's house. He moved her and her maidens to the best place in the women's house.
  
  10 Esther had not made known her people nor her relatives, because Mordecai had instructed her that she should not make it known.
  
  11 Mordecai walked every day in front of the court of the women's house, to find out how Esther was doing, and what would become of her.
  
  12 Each young woman's turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after her purification for twelve months (for so were the days of their purification accomplished, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet fragrances and with preparations for beautifying women).
  
  13 The young woman then came to the king like this: whatever she desired was given her to go with her out of the women's house to the king's house.
  
  14 In the evening she went, and on the next day she returned into the second women's house, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's eunuch, who kept the concubines. She came in to the king no more, unless the king delighted in her, and she was called by name.
  
  15 Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, came to go in to the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's eunuch, the keeper of the women, advised. Esther obtained favor in the sight of all those who looked at her.
  
  16 So Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus into his royal house in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
  
  17 The king loved Esther more than all the women, and she obtained favor and kindness in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown on her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
  
  18 Then the king made a great feast for all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he proclaimed a holiday in the provinces, and gave gifts according to the king's bounty.
  
  19 When the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting in the king's gate.
  
  20 Esther had not yet made known her relatives nor her people, as Mordecai had commanded her; for Esther obeyed Mordecai, like she did when she was brought up by him.
  
  21 In those days, while Mordecai was sitting in the king's gate, two of the king's eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, who were doorkeepers, were angry, and sought to lay hands on the King Ahasuerus.
  
  22 This thing became known to Mordecai, who informed Esther the queen; and Esther informed the king in Mordecai's name.
  
  23 When this matter was investigated, and it was found to be so, they were both hanged on a tree; and it was written in the book of the chronicles in the king's presence.
  
  Esther 3
  
  1 After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes who were with him.
  
  2 All the king's servants who were in the king's gate bowed down, and paid homage to Haman; for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai didn't bow down or pay him homage.
  
  3 Then the king's servants, who were in the king's gate, said to Mordecai, "Why do you disobey the king's commandment?"
  
  4 Now it came to pass, when they spoke daily to him, and he didn't listen to them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai's reason would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.
  
  5 When Haman saw that Mordecai didn't bow down, nor pay him homage, Haman was full of wrath.
  
  6 But he scorned the thought of laying hands on Mordecai alone, for they had made known to him Mordecai's people. Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even Mordecai's people.
  
  7 In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, and chose the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.
  
  8 Haman said to King Ahasuerus, "There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom, and their laws are different than other people's. They don't keep the king's laws. Therefore it is not for the king's profit to allow them to remain.
  
  9 If it pleases the king, let it be written that they be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who are in charge of the king's business, to bring it into the king's treasuries."
  
  10 The king took his ring from his hand, and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews' enemy.
  
  11 The king said to Haman, "The silver is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you."
  
  12 Then the king's scribes were called in on the first month, on the thirteenth day of the month; and all that Haman commanded was written to the king's satraps, and to the governors who were over every province, and to the princes of every people, to every province according its writing, and to every people in their language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus, and it was sealed with the king's ring.
  
  13 Letters were sent by couriers into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to plunder their possessions.
  
  14 A copy of the letter, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published to all the peoples, that they should be ready against that day.
  
  15 The couriers went forth in haste by the king's commandment, and the decree was given out in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.
  
  Esther 4
  
  1 Now when Mordecai found out all that was done, Mordecai tore his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and wailed loudly and a bitterly.
  
  2 He came even before the king's gate, for no one is allowed inside the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.
  
  3 In every province, wherever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
  
  4 Esther's maidens and her eunuchs came and told her this, and the queen was exceedingly grieved. She sent clothing to Mordecai, to replace his sackcloth; but he didn't receive it.
  
  5 Then Esther called for Hathach, one of the king's eunuchs, whom he had appointed to attend her, and commanded him to go to Mordecai, to find out what this was, and why it was.
  
  6 So Hathach went out to Mordecai, to city square which was before the king's gate.
  
  7 Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him, and the exact sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the destruction of the Jews.
  
  8 He also gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given out in Shushan to destroy them, to show it to Esther, and to declare it to her, and to urge her to go in to the king, to make supplication to him, and to make request before him, for her people.
  
  9 Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.
  
  10 Then Esther spoke to Hathach, and gave him a message to Mordecai:
  
  11 "All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, know, that whoever, whether man or woman, comes to the king into the inner court without being called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except those to whom the king might hold out the golden scepter, that he may live. I have not been called to come in to the king these thirty days."
  
  12 They told to Mordecai Esther's words.
  
  13 Then Mordecai asked them return answer to Esther, "Don't think to yourself that you will escape in the king's house any more than all the Jews.
  
  14 For if you remain silent now, then relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. Who knows if you haven't come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"
  
  15 Then Esther asked them to answer Mordecai,
  
  16 "Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day. I and my maidens will also fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish."
  
  17 So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
  
  Esther 5
  
  1 Now it happened on the third day that Esther put on her royal clothing, and stood in the inner court of the king's house, next to the king's house. The king sat on his royal throne in the royal house, next to the entrance of the house.
  
  2 When the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, she obtained favor in his sight; and the king held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. So Esther came near, and touched the top of the scepter.
  
  3 Then the king asked her, "What would you like, queen Esther? What is your request? It shall be given you even to the half of the kingdom."
  
  4 Esther said, "If it seems good to the king, let the king and Haman come today to the banquet that I have prepared for him."
  
  5 Then the king said, "Bring Haman quickly, so that it may be done as Esther has said." So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
  
  6 The king said to Esther at the banquet of wine, "What is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your request? Even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed."
  
  7 Then Esther answered and said, "My petition and my request is this.
  
  8 If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I will prepare for them, and I will do tomorrow as the king has said."
  
  9 Then Haman went out that day joyful and glad of heart, but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he didn't stand up nor move for him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai.
  
  10 Nevertheless Haman restrained himself, and went home. There, he sent and called for his friends and Zeresh his wife.
  
  11 Haman recounted to them the glory of his riches, the multitude of his children, all the things in which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.
  
  12 Haman also said, "Yes, Esther the queen let no man come in with the king to the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and tomorrow I am also invited by her together with the king.
  
  13 Yet all this avails me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate."
  
  14 Then Zeresh his wife and all his friends said to him, "Let a gallows be made fifty cubits high, and in the morning speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on it. Then go in merrily with the king to the banquet." This pleased Haman, so he had the gallows made.
  
  Esther 6
  
  1 On that night, the king couldn't sleep. He commanded the book of records of the chronicles to be brought, and they were read to the king.
  
  2 It was found written that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs, who were doorkeepers, who had tried to lay hands on the King Ahasuerus.
  
  3 The king said, "What honor and dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?" Then the king's servants who attended him said, "Nothing has been done for him."
  
  4 The king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had come into the outer court of the king's house, to speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.
  
  5 The king's servants said to him, "Behold, Haman stands in the court." The king said, "Let him come in."
  
  6 So Haman came in. The king said to him, "What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?" Now Haman said in his heart, "Who would the king delight to honor more than myself?"
  
  7 Haman said to the king, "For the man whom the king delights to honor,
  
  8 let royal clothing be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides on, and on the head of which a crown royal is set.
  
  9 Let the clothing and the horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that they may array the man whom the king delights to honor with them, and have him ride on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him, 'Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!'"
  
  10 Then the king said to Haman, "Hurry and take the clothing and the horse, as you have said, and do this for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king's gate. Let nothing fail of all that you have spoken."
  
  11 Then Haman took the clothing and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and had him ride through the city square, and proclaimed before him, "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!"
  
  12 Mordecai came back to the king's gate, but Haman hurried to his house, mourning and having his head covered.
  
  13 Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him, but you will surely fall before him."
  
  14 While they were yet talking with him, the king's eunuchs came, and hurried to bring Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
  
  Esther 7
  
  1 So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.
  
  2 The king said again to Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, "What is your petition, queen Esther? It shall be granted you. What is your request? Even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed."
  
  3 Then Esther the queen answered, "If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request.
  
  4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondservants and bondmaids, I would have held my peace, although the adversary could not have compensated for the king's loss."
  
  5 Then King Ahasuerus said to Esther the queen, "Who is he, and where is he who dared presume in his heart to do so?"
  
  6 Esther said, "An adversary and an enemy, even this wicked Haman!" Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.
  
  7 The king arose in his wrath from the banquet of wine and went into the palace garden. Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.
  
  8 Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman had fallen on the couch where Esther was. Then the king said, "Will he even assault the queen in front of me in the house?" As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.
  
  9 Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs who were with the king said, "Behold, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman has made for Mordecai, who spoke good for the king, is standing at Haman's house." The king said, "Hang him on it!"
  
  10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

  9 De son côté, la reine Vasthi organisa aussi un banquet pour les femmes du palais royal d’Assuérus.
  
  10 Le septième jour, placé dans de joyeuses dispositions par le vin, le roi Assuérus ordonna à Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zéthar et Carcas, les sept eunuques qui étaient à son service,
  
  11 de faire venir devant lui la reine Vasthi, coiffée de la couronne royale, pour montrer sa beauté aux peuples et aux princes. En effet, c’était une belle femme.
  
  12 Cependant, la reine Vasthi refusa de venir quand les eunuques lui transmirent le message du roi. Le roi s’en montra très fâché et en nourrit une ardente colère.
  
  13 Il s'adressa donc aux sages astrologues, car c’était ainsi que se traitaient les affaires royales : devant tous ceux qui connaissaient les lois et le droit.
  
  14 Son proche entourage était composé de Carshena, Shéthar, Admatha, Tarsis, Mérès, Marsena, Memucan. Ces sept princes de Perse et de Médie étaient admis en présence du roi et occupaient les premières places dans le royaume.
  
  15 Il leur demanda : « D’après la loi, comment faut-il traiter la reine Vasthi suite à son refus de respecter l’ordre du roi Assuérus transmis par les eunuques ? »
  
  16 Memucan répondit devant le roi et les princes : « Ce n'est pas seulement vis-à-vis du roi que la reine Vasthi s’est mal comportée, c'est aussi vis-à-vis de tous les princes et de tous les peuples qui habitent toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus.
  
  17 En effet, l’attitude de la reine déteindra sur l’ensemble des femmes et les incitera à porter un regard méprisant sur leur mari. Elles diront : ‘Le roi Assuérus avait ordonné qu'on fasse venir la reine Vasthi devant lui, et elle n'y est pas allée.’
  
  18 Aujourd’hui déjà, les princesses de Perse et de Médie qui ont entendu parler de l’attitude de la reine s’adresseront de la même manière à tous les princes du roi, ce qui entraînera beaucoup de mépris et de colère.
  
  19 Si le roi le juge bon, il devrait émettre un édit royal et l’inscrire dans les lois des Perses et des Mèdes, avec défense de l’enfreindre. Cet édit interdirait à Vasthi de se présenter devant le roi Assuérus et préciserait que le roi donnera le titre de reine à une autre qui soit meilleure qu'elle.
  
  20 Le décret du roi sera connu dans tout son royaume, malgré son immensité, et toutes les femmes honoreront leur mari, du plus grand au plus petit. »
  
  21 Le roi et les princes trouvèrent le conseil bon, et le roi agit conformément à la parole de Memucan :
  
  22 il envoya des lettres à toutes ses provinces, à chaque province dans son écriture et à chaque peuple dans sa langue, pour dire que tout homme devait être le chef de son foyer et y parler sa langue maternelle.
  
  Esther 2
  
  1 Après ces événements, une fois sa colère apaisée, le roi Assuérus pensa avec regret à Vasthi, à ce qu'elle avait fait et à la décision qui avait été prise à son sujet.
  
  2 Alors les jeunes serviteurs du roi dirent : « Qu'on recherche des jeunes filles qui soient vierges et belles pour le roi.
  
  3 Que le roi désigne, dans toutes les provinces de son royaume, des inspecteurs chargés de rassembler toutes les jeunes filles vierges et belles à Suse, la capitale, dans le harem, sous l’autorité d'Hégaï, l’eunuque du roi responsable des femmes ! Il leur fournira les produits cosmétiques nécessaires,
  
  4 et la jeune fille qui plaira au roi deviendra reine à la place de Vasthi. » Le roi trouva le conseil bon et s’y conforma.
  
  5 Il y avait à Suse, la capitale, un Juif du nom de Mardochée. C’était un fils de Jaïr, un descendant de Shimeï et de Kis, un Benjaminite
  
  6 qui avait quitté Jérusalem en compagnie du groupe d’exilés partis avec Jéconia, le roi de Juda, sur ordre de Nebucadnetsar, le roi de Babylone.
  
  7 Il se chargeait de l’éducation d’Hadassa, alias Esther, la fille de son oncle, car elle n'avait plus ni père ni mère. Cette jeune fille était belle à tout point de vue. A la mort de ses parents, Mardochée l'avait adoptée.
  
  8 Lorsqu'on proclama le message du roi, qui avait valeur de loi, et qu’on rassembla un grand nombre de jeunes filles à Suse, la capitale, sous l’autorité d'Hégaï, Esther fut aussi prise. Elle fut conduite au palais et placée sous l’autorité d'Hégaï, le responsable des femmes.
  
  9 La jeune fille lui plut et gagna sa sympathie. Il s'empressa de lui fournir les produits cosmétiques et les éléments dont elle avait besoin. Il lui donna aussi sept jeunes filles sélectionnées parmi le personnel du palais, puis il la déplaça avec ses suivantes dans le meilleur appartement du harem.
  
  10 Esther ne révéla ni son origine ni sa famille, car Mardochée lui avait interdit de le faire.
  
  11 Chaque jour il se promenait devant la cour du harem pour s’assurer du bien-être d’Esther et de la façon dont on la traitait.
  
  12 Chaque jeune fille devait se rendre vers le roi Assuérus lorsque c’était son tour, soit après mois passés à prendre soin de son corps, conformément à la règle en vigueur pour les femmes : 6 mois avec de l'huile de myrrhe et 6 mois avec des aromates et des produits cosmétiques spécifiquement féminins.
  
  13 C'est ainsi que chaque jeune fille se rendait vers le roi. Quand elle passait du harem au palais, on lui permettait de prendre avec elle tout ce qu'elle demandait.
  
  14 Elle y allait le soir, et le lendemain matin elle passait dans le second harem, sous l’autorité de Shaashgaz, l’eunuque du roi responsable des concubines. Elle ne retournait plus vers le roi, à moins que celui-ci n’ait envie d’elle et qu'elle ne soit nommément appelée.
  
  15 Lorsque son tour d'aller vers le roi arriva, Esther, fille d'Abichaïl – l’oncle de Mardochée, celui qui l'avait adoptée – ne réclama que ce que lui conseilla Hégaï, l’eunuque du roi responsable des femmes. Elle gagnait les faveurs de tous ceux qui la voyaient.
  
  16 Esther fut conduite vers le roi Assuérus, dans son palais royal, le dixième mois – c’est-à-dire le mois de Tébeth – la septième année de son règne.
  
  17 Le roi préféra Esther à toutes les autres femmes, elle gagna ses faveurs et sa sympathie plus que toutes les autres jeunes filles. Il mit la couronne royale sur sa tête et la proclama reine à la place de Vasthi.
  
  18 Le roi organisa un grand banquet pour tous ses princes et serviteurs, et ce en l'honneur d'Esther. Il accorda aussi des dispenses d’impôts aux provinces et distribua des cadeaux avec une générosité toute royale.
  
  19 La deuxième fois qu'on rassembla des jeunes filles, Mardochée était assis à la porte du roi.
  
  20 Esther n'avait toujours pas révélé ni sa famille ni son origine, car Mardochée le lui avait interdit, et elle respectait ses ordres comme lorsqu’elle était sous sa tutelle.
  
  21 A ce moment-là, Mardochée était donc assis à la porte du roi. Bigthan et Théresh, deux eunuques du roi qui avaient la garde de l’entrée, eurent un mouvement d'irritation et cherchèrent à porter la main contre le roi Assuérus.
  
  22 Mardochée en fut informé et le révéla à la reine Esther, qui parla de sa part au roi.
  
  23 L’information fut vérifiée et confirmée, de sorte que les deux eunuques furent pendus à une potence. Tout cela fut enregistré par écrit dans les annales en présence du roi.
  
  Esther 3
  
  1 Après ces événements, le roi Assuérus accorda plus d’importance et de pouvoir à Haman, fils d'Hammedatha, l'Agaguite. Il lui donna une position supérieure à celle de tous les princes de son entourage.
  
  2 Tous les serviteurs du roi qui se tenaient à la porte du roi pliaient le genou et se prosternaient devant Haman, car cela correspondait aux ordres du roi à son sujet. Mardochée, cependant, ne pliait pas le genou et ne se prosternait pas.
  
  3 Les serviteurs du roi qui se tenaient à la porte du roi lui dirent : « Pourquoi enfreins-tu l’ordre du roi ? »
  
  4 Comme ils le lui répétaient chaque jour et qu'il ne les écoutait pas, ils informèrent Haman de son attitude pour voir s’il persisterait dans sa décision. En effet, il leur avait dit qu'il était juif.
  
  5 Haman s’aperçut qu’effectivement Mardochée ne pliait pas le genou et ne se prosternait pas devant lui, et il fut rempli de colère.
  
  6 Cependant, il ne jugea pas suffisant de porter la main contre Mardochée seul. En effet, on lui avait révélé à quel peuple celui-ci appartenait et il chercha à exterminer tous les Juifs installés dans tout le royaume d'Assuérus, à savoir le peuple de Mardochée.
  
  7 La douzième année du règne d’Assuérus, le premier mois, c’est-à-dire le mois de Nisan, on jeta le « pour » – c'est-à-dire le sort – devant Haman pour chaque jour et chaque mois successivement, et le sort désigna le douzième mois, c’est-à-dire celui d'Adar.
  
  8 Haman dit alors au roi Assuérus : « Il y a dans l’ensemble des provinces de ton royaume un peuple unique, bien que dispersé, qui reste bien à part parmi les peuples. Il a des lois différentes de celles de tous les autres peuples et n'applique pas celles du roi. Le roi n’a aucun intérêt à le laisser tranquille.
  
  9 Si donc tu le juges bon, qu'on donne par écrit l'ordre de les faire disparaître. Ce sont 300 tonnes d'argent que je remettrai aux fonctionnaires pour le trésor du roi. »
  
  10 Le roi retira l’anneau de sa main et le donna à Haman, fils d'Hammedatha, l'Agaguite qui était l’adversaire des Juifs,
  
  11 et il lui dit : « L'argent et ce peuple sont à ta disposition. Fais-en ce que tu voudras. »
  
  12 On convoqua les secrétaires du roi le treizième jour du premier mois et l'on écrivit un message en tout point conforme aux ordres d’Haman et adressé aux satrapes du roi, aux gouverneurs de chaque province et aux chefs de chaque peuple, à chaque province dans son écriture et à chaque peuple dans sa langue. Le message fut écrit au nom du roi Assuérus et l’on y apposa l’empreinte du roi.
  
  13 Les lettres furent envoyées par l’intermédiaire de coursiers dans toutes les provinces du roi. Elles disaient qu’il fallait en un seul jour – le treizième du douzième mois, c’est-à-dire le mois d'Adar – exterminer, massacrer et supprimer tous les Juifs, jeunes et vieux, petits enfants et femmes, et procéder au pillage de leurs biens.
  
  14 Une copie du document devait être donnée avec force de loi à chaque province et être communiquée à tous les peuples afin qu’ils soient prêts pour ce jour-là.
  
  15 Les coursiers partirent sans tarder, sur ordre du roi. L'édit fut aussi proclamé à Suse, la capitale, et, tandis que le roi et Haman s’installaient pour boire, la ville de Suse était plongée dans la consternation.
  
  Esther 4
  
  1 Informé de tout ce qui se passait, Mardochée déchira ses vêtements, se couvrit d'un sac et de cendre, puis sillonna la ville en criant à pleine voix son amertume.
  
  2 Il alla ainsi jusqu'aux abords de la porte du roi, car son entrée était interdite à toute personne habillée d'un sac.
  
  3 Dans chaque province, partout où arrivait le message du roi, qui avait valeur de loi, les Juifs menaient grand deuil, avec jeûne, pleurs et lamentations ; beaucoup avaient pour lit le sac et la cendre.
  
  4 Lorsque ses servantes et ses eunuques vinrent lui rapporter ce qui se passait, la reine Esther en fut toute bouleversée. Elle fit parvenir des vêtements à Mardochée pour le pousser à s’habiller et à retirer son sac, mais il ne les accepta pas.
  
  5 Elle appela alors Hathac, l'un des eunuques que le roi avait attachés à son service, et le chargea d'aller demander à Mardochée ce qu’il avait et pourquoi il se comportait de cette manière.
  
  6 Hathac rejoignit Mardochée sur la place de la ville qui fait face à la porte du roi,
  
  7 et Mardochée lui raconta tout ce qui lui arrivait. Il lui précisa même la quantité d'argent qu'Haman avait promis de verser dans le trésor du roi pour pouvoir faire disparaître les Juifs.
  
  8 Il lui donna aussi une copie de l'édit proclamé dans Suse en vue de leur extermination afin qu'il le montre à Esther et lui fasse un rapport, en la chargeant de se rendre chez le roi pour lui demander grâce et plaider la cause de son peuple.
  
  9 Hathac vint rapporter à Esther les paroles de Mardochée.
  
  10 Celle-ci le chargea alors d'aller dire à Mardochée :
  
  11 « Tous les serviteurs du roi et la population de ses provinces savent que toute personne, homme ou femme, qui pénètre chez le roi, dans la cour intérieure, sans avoir été convoquée n’a droit qu’à un seul verdict : la mort. La seule personne qui reste en vie est celle à qui le roi tend le sceptre en or. Or, en ce qui me concerne, cela fait 30 jours que je n'ai pas été appelée vers lui. »
  
  12 On rapporta donc à Mardochée les paroles d'Esther,
  
  13 et Mardochée lui fit répondre : « Ne t'imagine pas que ta position au palais te permettra d’être sauvée, au contraire de tous les Juifs.
  
  14 En effet, si tu gardes le silence maintenant, le secours et la délivrance surgiront d'autre part pour les Juifs, tandis que ta famille et toi vous mourrez. Qui sait ? Peut-être est-ce pour une circonstance telle que celle-ci que tu es parvenue à la royauté. »
  
  15 Esther fit répondre à Mardochée :
  
  16 « Va rassembler tous les Juifs qui se trouvent à Suse et jeûnez pour moi ! Ne mangez et ne buvez rien pendant trois jours, ni la nuit ni le jour. Moi aussi, je respecterai un tel jeûne avec mes servantes, et c’est dans ces dispositions que je pénétrerai chez le roi : j’enfreindrai la loi et, si je dois mourir, je mourrai. »
  
  17 Mardochée s'en alla faire tout ce qu'Esther lui avait ordonné.
  
  Esther 5
  
  1 Trois jours plus tard, Esther mit sa tenue royale et se tint debout dans la cour intérieure du palais, devant les appartements du roi. Celui-ci était assis sur son trône royal dans le palais royal, face à l'entrée du bâtiment.
  
  2 Lorsqu’il vit la reine Esther debout dans la cour, elle gagna sa faveur et il lui tendit le sceptre en or qu'il tenait. Esther s'approcha et toucha le bout du sceptre.
  
  3 Le roi lui dit : « Qu'as-tu, reine Esther, et que désires-tu ? Même si tu réclames la moitié du royaume, elle te sera donnée. »
  
  4 Esther répondit : « Si tu le juges bon, roi, j’aimerais que tu viennes aujourd'hui avec Haman au banquet que j’ai organisé pour toi. »
  
  5 Le roi dit alors : « Allez sans tarder chercher Haman pour répondre à l’invitation d’Esther », et il se rendit avec Haman au banquet que celle-ci avait préparé.
  
  6 Pendant qu'on buvait le vin, le roi dit à Esther : « Quel est l’objet de ta demande ? Il te sera accordé. Que désires-tu ? Même si tu réclames la moitié du royaume, tu l'obtiendras. »
  
  7 Esther répondit : « Ce que je demande et ce que je désire ?
  
  8 Si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux et si tu juges bon de m'accorder l’objet de ma demande et de satisfaire mon désir, j’aimerais que tu viennes avec Haman au festin que j’organiserai pour vous, et c’est demain que je répondrai à ta proposition. »
  
  9 Ce jour-là, Haman repartit content, dans de joyeuses dispositions. Mais lorsqu'il vit que Mardochée, toujours à la porte du roi, ne se levait toujours pas et ne tremblait toujours pas devant lui, il fut rempli de colère contre lui.
  
  10 Il parvint néanmoins à se contenir et rentra chez lui. Puis il envoya chercher ses amis et sa femme Zéresh,
  
  11 et il leur exposa point par point la valeur de ses richesses, le grand nombre de ses fils, toute l’importance et tout le pouvoir que le roi lui avait accordés en le plaçant au-dessus de tous les princes et de ses propres serviteurs.
  
  12 Il ajouta : « Je suis même le seul que la reine Esther ait admis avec le roi au banquet qu'elle a organisé et je suis encore invité pour demain chez elle en compagnie du roi.
  
  13 Cependant, tout cela n’a aucune valeur pour moi aussi longtemps que je verrai Mardochée, le Juif, assis à la porte du roi. »
  
  14 Sa femme Zéresh et tous ses amis lui suggérèrent alors : « Fais préparer une potence de 25 mètres de haut et demain matin demande au roi qu'on y pende Mardochée. Tu pourras ensuite accompagner dans la joie le roi au banquet. » Haman trouva le conseil bon et fit préparer la potence.
  
  Esther 6
  
  1 Cette nuit-là, le roi ne parvint pas à trouver le sommeil. Il se fit donc apporter le registre des événements marquants, les annales, et l’on en fit la lecture devant lui.
  
  2 On y trouva mentionnées les révélations faites par Mardochée à propos de Bigthan et de Théresh, les deux eunuques du roi qui avaient la garde de l’entrée et qui avaient voulu porter la main contre le roi Assuérus.
  
  3 Le roi demanda : « Quelle marque d'honneur et de grandeur a-t-on accordée à Mardochée pour cela ? » « On ne lui a absolument rien accordé », répondirent les jeunes serviteurs du roi.
  
  4 Le roi demanda alors : « Qui donc est dans la cour ? » – Haman avait fait son apparition dans la cour extérieure du palais pour demander au roi de faire pendre Mardochée à la potence qu'il avait préparée à son intention. –
  
  5 Les serviteurs du roi lui répondirent : « C'est Haman qui se tient dans la cour. » « Qu’il entre ! » ordonna le roi.
  
  6 Dès qu’Haman fut entré, le roi lui demanda : « Comment faut-il traiter un homme que le roi veut honorer ? » Haman se dit : « Qui d’autre, à part moi, le roi voudrait-il honorer ? »
  
  7 et il lui répondit : « Si le roi veut honorer un homme,
  
  8 il faut prendre un vêtement royal que le roi a déjà porté, ainsi qu’un cheval que le roi a déjà monté et sur la tête duquel on ait posé une couronne royale.
  
  9 Il faut confier le vêtement et le cheval à l'un des plus illustres princes du roi, mettre cette tenue à l'homme que le roi veut honorer, le conduire, monté sur le cheval, sur la place de la ville et crier devant lui : ‘Voici comment l'on agit pour l'homme que le roi veut honorer !’ »
  
  10 Le roi dit à Haman : « Dépêche-toi de prendre le vêtement et le cheval, comme tu l'as dit, et fais tout cela pour le Juif Mardochée qui est assis à la porte du roi, sans rien négliger de tout ce que tu as mentionné ! »
  
  11 Haman prit donc le vêtement et le cheval, mit cette tenue à Mardochée et le conduisit, monté sur le cheval, sur la place de la ville en criant devant lui : « Voici comment l'on agit pour l'homme que le roi veut honorer ! »
  
  12 Mardochée retourna ensuite à la porte du roi, tandis qu’Haman s’empressait de rentrer chez lui, dans une attitude de deuil et la tête couverte.
  
  13 Lorsqu’il exposa point par point à sa femme Zéresh et à tous ses amis tout ce qui lui était arrivé, ses conseillers et sa femme Zéresh lui dirent : « Si ce Mardochée devant lequel tu as entamé ta déchéance est un Juif, tu ne pourras rien faire contre lui : tu ne pourras que perdre la partie contre lui. »
  
  14 Ils parlaient encore avec lui quand les eunuques du roi arrivèrent. Ils s’empressèrent de conduire Haman au banquet qu'Esther avait préparé.
  
  Esther 7
  
  1 Le roi et Haman se rendirent au banquet donné chez la reine Esther.
  
  2 Ce second jour de nouveau, le roi dit à Esther, pendant qu'on buvait le vin : « Quel est l’objet de ta demande ? Il te sera accordé. Que désires-tu ? Même si tu réclames la moitié du royaume, tu l'obtiendras. »
  
  3 La reine Esther répondit : « Si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, roi, et si tu le juges bon, accorde-moi la vie sauve, voilà ma demande, et sauve mon peuple, voilà mon désir !
  
  4 En effet, nous avons été vendus, mon peuple et moi, pour être exterminés, massacrés, supprimés. Si encore nous avions été vendus pour devenir des esclaves et des servantes, j’aurais gardé le silence, mais l'adversaire ne saurait compenser le préjudice ainsi causé au roi. »
  
  5 Prenant la parole, le roi Assuérus demanda à la reine Esther : « Qui est-il et où est-il, celui qui a projeté d'agir de cette manière ? »
  
  6 Esther répondit : « L’homme qui est notre adversaire, notre ennemi, c'est Haman, le misérable que voici ! » Haman trembla de terreur devant le roi et la reine.
  
  7 Dans sa colère, le roi se leva et quitta le banquet pour aller dans le jardin du palais. Quant à Haman, il resta là pour demander la vie sauve à la reine Esther, car il voyait bien que sa perte était décidée dans l'esprit du roi.
  
  8 A son retour du jardin du palais, en pénétrant dans la salle de banquet le roi le trouva affalé contre le siège occupé par Esther, et il dit : « Ira-t-il jusqu’à violer la reine en ma présence, dans le palais ? » Dès que cette parole fut sortie de la bouche du roi, on recouvrit le visage d'Haman.
  
  9 Harbona, l'un des eunuques, dit alors devant le roi : « Il y a une potence préparée par Haman à l’intention de Mardochée, celui qui avait parlé pour le bien du roi. Elle est dressée dans la maison d'Haman et fait 25 mètres de haut. » Le roi ordonna : « Pendez-y donc Haman ! »
  
  10 Ainsi, on pendit Haman à la potence qu'il avait préparée pour Mardochée, et la colère du roi s'apaisa.
