  12 Solomon sat on the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was firmly established.
  
  13 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. She said, "Do you come peaceably?" He said, "Peaceably.
  
  14 He said moreover, I have something to tell you." She said, "Say on."
  
  15 He said, "You know that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign. However the kingdom is turned around, and has become my brother's; for it was his from Yahweh.
  
  16 Now I ask one petition of you. Don't deny me." She said to him, "Say on."
  
  17 He said, "Please speak to Solomon the king (for he will not tell you 'no'), that he give me Abishag the Shunammite as wife."
  
  18 Bathsheba said, "Alright. I will speak for you to the king."
  
  19 Bathsheba therefore went to king Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. The king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself to her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a throne to be set for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.
  
  20 Then she said, "I ask one small petition of you; don't deny me." The king said to her, "Ask on, my mother; for I will not deny you."
  
  21 She said, "Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as wife."
  
  22 King Solomon answered his mother, "Why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also; for he is my elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah."
  
  23 Then king Solomon swore by Yahweh, saying, "God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life.
  
  24 Now therefore as Yahweh lives, who has established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house, as he promised, surely Adonijah shall be put to death this day."
  
  25 King Solomon sent by Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell on him, so that he died.
  
  26 To Abiathar the priest the king said, "Go to Anathoth, to your own fields; for you are worthy of death. But I will not at this time put you to death, because you bore the ark of the Lord Yahweh before David my father, and because you were afflicted in all in which my father was afflicted."
  
  27 So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest to Yahweh, that he might fulfill the word of Yahweh, which he spoke concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.
  
  28 The news came to Joab; for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he didn't turn after Absalom. Joab fled to the Tent of Yahweh, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
  
  29 It was told king Solomon, "Joab has fled to the Tent of Yahweh, and behold, he is by the altar." Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, "Go, fall on him."
  
  30 Benaiah came to the Tent of Yahweh, and said to him, "Thus says the king, 'Come forth!'" He said, "No; but I will die here." Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, "Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me."
  
  31 The king said to him, "Do as he has said, and fall on him, and bury him; that you may take away the blood, which Joab shed without cause, from me and from my father's house.
  
  32 Yahweh will return his blood on his own head, because he fell on two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, and my father David didn't know it: Abner the son of Ner, captain of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah.
  
  33 So shall their blood return on the head of Joab, and on the head of his seed forever. But to David, and to his seed, and to his house, and to his throne, there shall be peace forever from Yahweh."
  
  34 Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell on him, and killed him; and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
  
  35 The king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army; and the king put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.
  
  36 The king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, "Build yourself a house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and don't go out from there anywhere.
  
  37 For on the day you go out, and pass over the brook Kidron, know for certain that you shall surely die: your blood shall be on your own head."
  
  38 Shimei said to the king, "The saying is good. As my lord the king has said, so will your servant do." Shimei lived in Jerusalem many days.
  
  39 It happened at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away to Achish, son of Maacah, king of Gath. They told Shimei, saying, "Behold, your servants are in Gath."
  
  40 Shimei arose, and saddled his donkey, and went to Gath to Achish, to seek his servants; and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath.
  
  41 It was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had come again.
  
  42 The king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, "Didn't I adjure you by Yahweh, and warn you, saying, 'Know for certain, that on the day you go out, and walk abroad any where, you shall surely die?' You said to me, 'The saying that I have heard is good.'
  
  43 Why then have you not kept the oath of Yahweh, and the commandment that I have instructed you with?"
  
  44 The king said moreover to Shimei, "You know all the wickedness which your heart is privy to, that you did to David my father. Therefore Yahweh shall return your wickedness on your own head.
  
  45 But king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before Yahweh forever."
  
  46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out, and fell on him, so that he died. The kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

  1 Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of Yahweh, and the wall of Jerusalem all around.
  
  2 Only the people sacrificed in the high places, because there was no house built for the name of Yahweh until those days.
  
  3 Solomon loved Yahweh, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.
  
  4 The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.
  
  5 In Gibeon Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask what I shall give you."
  
  6 Solomon said, "You have shown to your servant David my father great loving kindness, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you. You have kept for him this great loving kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
  
  7 Now, Yahweh my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father. I am but a little child. I don't know how to go out or come in.
  
  8 Your servant is in the midst of your people which you have chosen, a great people, that can't be numbered nor counted for multitude.
  
  9 Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this your great people?"
  
  10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
  
  11 God said to him, "Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life, neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice;
  
  12 behold, I have done according to your word. Behold, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there has been none like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like you.
  
  13 I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like you, all your days.
  
  14 If you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days."
  
  15 Solomon awoke; and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
  
  16 Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king, and stood before him.
  
  17 The one woman said, "Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house. I delivered a child with her in the house.
  
  18 It happened the third day after I delivered, that this woman delivered also. We were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, just us two in the house.
  
  19 This woman's child died in the night, because she lay on it.
  
  20 She arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while your handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.
  
  21 When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, it was dead; but when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I bore."
  
  22 The other woman said, "No; but the living is my son, and the dead is your son." This said, "No; but the dead is your son, and the living is my son." Thus they spoke before the king.
  
  23 Then the king said, "The one says, 'This is my son who lives, and your son is the dead;' and the other says, 'No; but your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.'"
  
  24 The king said, "Get me a sword." They brought a sword before the king.
  
  25 The king said, "Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other."
  
  26 Then the woman whose the living child was spoke to the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, "Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no way kill it!" But the other said, "It shall be neither mine nor yours. Divide it."
  
  27 Then the king answered, "Give her the living child, and in no way kill it. She is its mother."
  
  28 All Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

  1 King Solomon was king over all Israel.
  
  2 These were the princes whom he had: Azariah the son of Zadok, the priest;
  
  3 Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha, scribes; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the recorder;
  
  4 and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the army; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
  
  5 and Azariah the son of Nathan was over the officers; and Zabud the son of Nathan was chief minister, the king's friend;
  
  6 and Ahishar was over the household; and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the men subject to forced labor.
  
  7 Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, who provided food for the king and his household: each man had to make provision for a month in the year.
  
  8 These are their names: Ben Hur, in the hill country of Ephraim;
  
  9 Ben Deker, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Beth Shemesh, and Elon Beth Hanan;
  
  10 Ben Hesed, in Arubboth (to him belonged Socoh, and all the land of Hepher);
  
  11 Ben Abinadab, in all the height of Dor (he had Taphath the daughter of Solomon as wife);
  
  12 Baana the son of Ahilud, in Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth Shean which is beside Zarethan, beneath Jezreel, from Beth Shean to Abel Meholah, as far as beyond Jokmeam;
  
  13 Ben Geber, in Ramoth Gilead (to him belonged the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead; to him belonged the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars);
  
  14 Ahinadab the son of Iddo, in Mahanaim;
  
  15 Ahimaaz, in Naphtali (he also took Basemath the daughter of Solomon as wife);
  
  16 Baana the son of Hushai, in Asher and Bealoth;
  
  17 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar;
  
  18 Shimei the son of Ela, in Benjamin;
  
  19 Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only officer who was in the land.
  
  20 Judah and Israel were many as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking and making merry.
  
  21 Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt: they brought tribute, and served Solomon all the days of his life.
  
  22 Solomon's provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and sixty measures of meal,
  
  23 ten head of fat cattle, and twenty head of cattle out of the pastures, and one hundred sheep, besides harts, and gazelles, and roebucks, and fattened fowl.
  
  24 For he had dominion over all on this side the River, from Tiphsah even to Gaza, over all the kings on this side the River: and he had peace on all sides around him.
  
  25 Judah and Israel lived safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.
  
  26 Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.
  
  27 Those officers provided food for king Solomon, and for all who came to king Solomon's table, every man in his month; they let nothing be lacking.
  
  28 Barley also and straw for the horses and swift steeds brought they to the place where the officers were, every man according to his duty.
  
  29 God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and very great understanding, even as the sand that is on the seashore.
  
  30 Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east, and all the wisdom of Egypt.
  
  31 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all the nations all around.
  
  32 He spoke three thousand proverbs; and his songs were one thousand five.
  
  33 He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon even to the hyssop that springs out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, and of birds, and of creeping things, and of fish.
  
  34 There came of all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom.

  1 Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the place of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.
  
  2 Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,
  
  3 "You know how that David my father could not build a house for the name of Yahweh his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until Yahweh put them under the soles of his feet.
  
  4 But now Yahweh my God has given me rest on every side. There is neither adversary, nor evil occurrence.
  
  5 Behold, I purpose to build a house for the name of Yahweh my God, as Yahweh spoke to David my father, saying, 'Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build the house for my name.'
  
  6 Now therefore command that they cut me cedar trees out of Lebanon. My servants shall be with your servants; and I will give you wages for your servants according to all that you shall say. For you know that there is not among us any who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians."
  
  7 It happened, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, "Blessed is Yahweh this day, who has given to David a wise son over this great people."
  
  8 Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, "I have heard the message which you have sent to me. I will do all your desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.
  
  9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea. I will make them into rafts to go by sea to the place that you shall appoint me, and will cause them to be broken up there, and you shall receive them. You shall accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household."
  
  10 So Hiram gave Solomon timber of cedar and timber of fir according to all his desire.
  
  11 Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil. Solomon gave this to Hiram year by year.
  
  12 Yahweh gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a treaty together.
  
  13 King Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.
  
  14 He sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses; a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home; and Adoniram was over the men subject to forced labor.
  
  15 Solomon had seventy thousand who bore burdens, and eighty thousand who were stone cutters in the mountains;
  
  16 besides Solomon's chief officers who were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, who bore rule over the people who labored in the work.
  
  17 The king commanded, and they cut out great stones, costly stones, to lay the foundation of the house with worked stone.
  
  18 Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the Gebalites cut them, and prepared the timber and the stones to build the house.

  1 It happened in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Ziv, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of Yahweh.
  
  2 The house which king Solomon built for Yahweh, its length was sixty cubits, and its breadth twenty, and its height thirty cubits.
  
  3 The porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was its length, according to the breadth of the house. Ten cubits was its breadth before the house.
  
  4 For the house he made windows of fixed lattice work.
  
  5 Against the wall of the house he built stories all around, against the walls of the house all around, both of the temple and of the oracle; and he made side rooms all around.
  
  6 The nethermost story was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad; for on the outside he made offsets in the wall of the house all around, that the beams should not have hold in the walls of the house.
  
  7 The house, when it was in building, was built of stone prepared at the quarry; and there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.
  
  8 The door for the middle side rooms was in the right side of the house: and they went up by winding stairs into the middle story, and out of the middle into the third.
  
  9 So he built the house, and finished it; and he covered the house with beams and planks of cedar.
  
  10 He built the stories against all the house, each five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.
  
  11 The word of Yahweh came to Solomon, saying,
  
  12 "Concerning this house which you are building, if you will walk in my statutes, and execute my ordinances, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I establish my word with you, which I spoke to David your father.
  
  13 I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel."
  
  14 So Solomon built the house, and finished it.
  
  15 He built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar: from the floor of the house to the walls of the ceiling, he covered them on the inside with wood; and he covered the floor of the house with boards of fir.
  
  16 He built twenty cubits on the hinder part of the house with boards of cedar from the floor to the ceiling: he built them for it within, for an oracle, even for the most holy place.
  
  17 In front of the temple sanctuary was forty cubits.
  
  18 There was cedar on the house within, carved with buds and open flowers: all was cedar; there was no stone seen.
  
  19 He prepared an oracle in the midst of the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh.
  
  20 Within the oracle was twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in its height; and he overlaid it with pure gold: and he covered the altar with cedar.
  
  21 So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he drew chains of gold across before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold.
  
  22 The whole house he overlaid with gold, until all the house was finished: also the whole altar that belonged to the oracle he overlaid with gold.
  
  23 In the oracle he made two cherubim of olive wood, each ten cubits high.
  
  24 Five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing to the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.
  
  25 The other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubim were of one measure and one form.
  
  26 The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it of the other cherub.
  
  27 He set the cherubim within the inner house; and the wings of the cherubim were stretched forth, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.
  
  28 He overlaid the cherubim with gold.
  
  29 He carved all the walls of the house around with carved figures of cherubim and palm trees and open flowers, inside and outside.
  
  30 The floor of the house he overlaid with gold, inside and outside.
  
  31 For the entrance of the oracle he made doors of olive wood: the lintel and door posts were a fifth part of the wall.
  
  32 So he made two doors of olive wood; and he carved on them carvings of cherubim and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold; and he spread the gold on the cherubim, and on the palm trees.
  
  33 So also made he for the entrance of the temple door posts of olive wood, out of a fourth part of the wall;
  
  34 and two doors of fir wood: the two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding.
  
  35 He carved cherubim and palm trees and open flowers; and he overlaid them with gold fitted on the engraved work.
  
  36 He built the inner court with three courses of cut stone, and a course of cedar beams.
  
  37 In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of Yahweh laid, in the month Ziv.
  
  38 In the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all its parts, and according to all its fashion. So was he seven years in building it.

  1 Solomon was building his own house thirteen years, and he finished all his house.
  
  2 For he built the house of the forest of Lebanon; its length was one hundred cubits, and its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits, on four rows of cedar pillars, with cedar beams on the pillars.
  
  3 It was covered with cedar above over the forty-five beams, that were on the pillars; fifteen in a row.
  
  4 There were beams in three rows, and window was over against window in three ranks.
  
  5 All the doors and posts were made square with beams: and window was over against window in three ranks.
  
  6 He made the porch of pillars; its length was fifty cubits, and its breadth thirty cubits; and a porch before them; and pillars and a threshold before them.
  
  7 He made the porch of the throne where he was to judge, even the porch of judgment: and it was covered with cedar from floor to floor.
  
  8 His house where he was to dwell, the other court within the porch, was of the like work. He made also a house for Pharaoh's daughter (whom Solomon had taken as wife), like this porch.
  
  9 All these were of costly stones, even of cut stone, according to measure, sawed with saws, inside and outside, even from the foundation to the coping, and so on the outside to the great court.
  
  10 The foundation was of costly stones, even great stones, stones of ten cubits, and stones of eight cubits.
  
  11 Above were costly stones, even cut stone, according to measure, and cedar wood.
  
  12 The great court around had three courses of cut stone, and a course of cedar beams; like as the inner court of the house of Yahweh, and the porch of the house.
  
  13 King Solomon sent and fetched Hiram out of Tyre.
  
  14 He was the son of a widow of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in brass; and he was filled with wisdom and understanding and skill, to work all works in brass. He came to king Solomon, and performed all his work.
  
  15 For he fashioned the two pillars of brass, eighteen cubits high apiece: and a line of twelve cubits encircled either of them about.
  
  16 He made two capitals of molten brass, to set on the tops of the pillars: the height of the one capital was five cubits, and the height of the other capital was five cubits.
  
  17 There were nets of checker work, and wreaths of chain work, for the capitals which were on the top of the pillars; seven for the one capital, and seven for the other capital.
  
  18 So he made the pillars; and there were two rows around on the one network, to cover the capitals that were on the top of the pillars: and he did so for the other capital.
  
  19 The capitals that were on the top of the pillars in the porch were of lily work, four cubits.
  
  20 There were capitals above also on the two pillars, close by the belly which was beside the network: and the pomegranates were two hundred, in rows around on the other capital.
  
  21 He set up the pillars at the porch of the temple: and he set up the right pillar, and called its name Jachin; and he set up the left pillar, and called its name Boaz.
  
  22 On the top of the pillars was lily work: so was the work of the pillars finished.
  
  23 He made the molten sea of ten cubits from brim to brim, round in compass, and its height was five cubits; and a line of thirty cubits encircled it.
  
  24 Under its brim around there were buds which encircled it, for ten cubits, encircling the sea: the buds were in two rows, cast when it was cast.
  
  25 It stood on twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east; and the sea was set on them above, and all their hinder parts were inward.
  
  26 It was a handbreadth thick: and its brim was worked like the brim of a cup, like the flower of a lily: it held two thousand baths.
  
  27 He made the ten bases of brass; four cubits was the length of one base, and four cubits its breadth, and three cubits its height.
  
  28 The work of the bases was like this: they had panels; and there were panels between the ledges;
  
  29 and on the panels that were between the ledges were lions, oxen, and cherubim; and on the ledges there was a pedestal above; and beneath the lions and oxen were wreaths of hanging work.
  
  30 Every base had four bronze wheels, and axles of brass; and the four feet of it had supports: beneath the basin were the supports molten, with wreaths at the side of each.
  
  31 The mouth of it within the capital and above was a cubit: and its mouth was round after the work of a pedestal, a cubit and a half; and also on its mouth were engravings, and their panels were foursquare, not round.
  
  32 The four wheels were underneath the panels; and the axles of the wheels were in the base: and the height of a wheel was a cubit and half a cubit.
  
  33 The work of the wheels was like the work of a chariot wheel: their axles, and their rims, and their spokes, and their naves, were all molten.
  
  34 There were four supports at the four corners of each base: its supports were of the base itself.
  
  35 In the top of the base was there a round compass half a cubit high; and on the top of the base its stays and its panels were of the same.
  
  36 On the plates of its stays, and on its panels, he engraved cherubim, lions, and palm trees, according to the space of each, with wreaths all around.
  
  37 In this way, he made the ten bases: all of them had one casting, one measure, and one form.
  
  38 He made ten basins of brass: one basin contained forty baths; and every basin was four cubits; and on every one of the ten bases one basin.
  
  39 He set the bases, five on the right side of the house, and five on the left side of the house: and he set the sea on the right side of the house eastward, toward the south.
  
  40 Hiram made the basins, and the shovels, and the basins. So Hiram made an end of doing all the work that he worked for king Solomon in the house of Yahweh:
  
  41 the two pillars, and the two bowls of the capitals that were on the top of the pillars; and the two networks to cover the two bowls of the capitals that were on the top of the pillars;
  
  42 and the four hundred pomegranates for the two networks; two rows of pomegranates for each network, to cover the two bowls of the capitals that were on the pillars;
  
  43 and the ten bases, and the ten basins on the bases;
  
  44 and the one sea, and the twelve oxen under the sea;
  
  45 and the pots, and the shovels, and the basins: even all these vessels, which Hiram made for king Solomon, in the house of Yahweh, were of burnished brass.
  
  46 The king cast them in the plain of the Jordan, in the clay ground between Succoth and Zarethan.
  
  47 Solomon left all the vessels unweighed, because they were exceeding many: the weight of the brass could not be found out.
  
  48 Solomon made all the vessels that were in the house of Yahweh: the golden altar, and the table whereupon the show bread was, of gold;
  
  49 and the lampstands, five on the right side, and five on the left, before the oracle, of pure gold; and the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs, of gold;
  
  50 and the cups, and the snuffers, and the basins, and the spoons, and the fire pans, of pure gold; and the hinges, both for the doors of the inner house, the most holy place, and for the doors of the house, of the temple, of gold.
  
  51 Thus all the work that king Solomon worked in the house of Yahweh was finished. Solomon brought in the things which David his father had dedicated, the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, and put them in the treasuries of the house of Yahweh.

  1 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the princes of the fathers' households of the children of Israel, to king Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of Yahweh out of the city of David, which is Zion.
  
  2 All the men of Israel assembled themselves to king Solomon at the feast, in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month.
  
  3 All the elders of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark.
  
  4 They brought up the ark of Yahweh, and the Tent of Meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the Tent; even these the priests and the Levites brought up.
  
  5 King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, who were assembled to him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and cattle, that could not be counted nor numbered for multitude.
  
  6 The priests brought in the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to its place, into the oracle of the house, to the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubim.
  
  7 For the cherubim spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubim covered the ark and its poles above.
  
  8 The poles were so long that the ends of the poles were seen from the holy place before the oracle; but they were not seen outside: and there they are to this day.
  
  9 There was nothing in the ark except the two tables of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, when Yahweh made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.
  
  10 It came to pass, when the priests had come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of Yahweh,
  
  11 so that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud; for the glory of Yahweh filled the house of Yahweh.
  
  12 Then Solomon said, "Yahweh has said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.
  
  13 I have surely built you a house of habitation, a place for you to dwell in forever."
  
  14 The king turned his face about, and blessed all the assembly of Israel: and all the assembly of Israel stood.
  
  15 He said, "Blessed is Yahweh, the God of Israel, who spoke with his mouth to David your father, and has with his hand fulfilled it, saying,
  
  16 'Since the day that I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build a house, that my name might be there; but I chose David to be over my people Israel.'
  
  17 "Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
  
  18 But Yahweh said to David my father, 'Whereas it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart.
  
  19 Nevertheless, you shall not build the house; but your son who shall come forth out of your body, he shall build the house for my name.'
  
  20 Yahweh has established his word that he spoke; for I have risen up in the place of David my father, and I sit on the throne of Israel, as Yahweh promised, and have built the house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
  
  21 There I have set a place for the ark, in which is the covenant of Yahweh, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt."
  
  22 Solomon stood before the altar of Yahweh in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven;
  
  23 and he said, "Yahweh, the God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above, or on earth beneath; who keep covenant and loving kindness with your servants, who walk before you with all their heart;
  
  24 who have kept with your servant David my father that which you promised him. Yes, you spoke with your mouth, and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is this day.
  
  25 Now therefore, may Yahweh, the God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father that which you have promised him, saying, 'There shall not fail you a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children take heed to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.'
  
  26 "Now therefore, God of Israel, please let your word be verified, which you spoke to your servant David my father.
  
  27 But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can't contain you; how much less this house that I have built!
  
  28 Yet have respect for the prayer of your servant, and for his supplication, Yahweh my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which your servant prays before you this day;
  
  29 that your eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which you have said, 'My name shall be there;' to listen to the prayer which your servant shall pray toward this place.
  
  30 Listen to the supplication of your servant, and of your people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place. Yes, hear in heaven, your dwelling place; and when you hear, forgive.
  
  31 "If a man sins against his neighbor, and an oath is laid on him to cause him to swear, and he comes and swear before your altar in this house;
  
  32 then hear in heaven, and do, and judge your servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way on his own head, and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.
  
  33 "When your people Israel are struck down before the enemy, because they have sinned against you; if they turn again to you, and confess your name, and pray and make supplication to you in this house:
  
  34 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again to the land which you gave to their fathers.
  
  35 "When the sky is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you; if they pray toward this place, and confess your name, and turn from their sin, when you afflict them:
  
  36 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your servants, and of your people Israel, when you teach them the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on your land, which you have given to your people for an inheritance.
  
  37 "If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight, mildew, locust or caterpillar; if their enemy besieges them in the land of their cities; whatever plague, whatever sickness there is;
  
  38 whatever prayer and supplication is made by any man, or by all your people Israel, who shall each know the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:
  
  39 then hear in heaven, your dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and render to every man according to all his ways, whose heart you know; (for you, even you only, know the hearts of all the children of men;)
  
  40 that they may fear you all the days that they live in the land which you gave to our fathers.
  
  41 "Moreover concerning the foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, when he shall come out of a far country for your name's sake
  
  42 (for they shall hear of your great name, and of your mighty hand, and of your outstretched arm); when he shall come and pray toward this house;
  
  43 hear in heaven, your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you for; that all the peoples of the earth may know your name, to fear you, as do your people Israel, and that they may know that this house which I have built is called by your name.
  
  44 "If your people go out to battle against their enemy, by whatever way you shall send them, and they pray to Yahweh toward the city which you have chosen, and toward the house which I have built for your name;
  
  45 then hear in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.
  
  46 If they sin against you (for there is no man who doesn't sin), and you are angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive to the land of the enemy, far off or near;
  
  47 yet if they shall repent in the land where they are carried captive, and turn again, and make supplication to you in the land of those who carried them captive, saying, 'We have sinned, and have done perversely; we have dealt wickedly;'
  
  48 if they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies, who carried them captive, and pray to you toward their land, which you gave to their fathers, the city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name:
  
  49 then hear their prayer and their supplication in heaven, your dwelling place, and maintain their cause;
  
  50 and forgive your people who have sinned against you, and all their transgressions in which they have transgressed against you; and give them compassion before those who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them
  
  51 (for they are your people, and your inheritance, which you brought out of Egypt, from the midst of the furnace of iron);
  
  52 that your eyes may be open to the supplication of your servant, and to the supplication of your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they cry to you.
  
  53 For you separated them from among all the peoples of the earth, to be your inheritance, as you spoke by Moses your servant, when you brought our fathers out of Egypt, Lord Yahweh."
  
  54 It was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication to Yahweh, he arose from before the altar of Yahweh, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread forth toward heaven.
  
  55 He stood, and blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying,
  
  56 "Blessed be Yahweh, who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant.
  
  57 May Yahweh our God be with us, as he was with our fathers. Let him not leave us, nor forsake us;
  
  58 that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his ordinances, which he commanded our fathers.
  
  59 Let these my words, with which I have made supplication before Yahweh, be near to Yahweh our God day and night, that he may maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel, as every day shall require;
  
  60 that all the peoples of the earth may know that Yahweh, he is God. There is none else.
  
  61 "Let your heart therefore be perfect with Yahweh our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day."
  
  62 The king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before Yahweh.
  
  63 Solomon offered for the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered to Yahweh, two and twenty thousand head of cattle, and one hundred twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of Yahweh.
  
  64 The same day the king made the middle of the court holy that was before the house of Yahweh; for there he offered the burnt offering, and the meal offering, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that was before Yahweh was too little to receive the burnt offering, and the meal offering, and the fat of the peace offerings.
  
  65 So Solomon held the feast at that time, and all Israel with him, a great assembly, from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of Egypt, before Yahweh our God, seven days and seven days, even fourteen days.
  
  66 On the eighth day he sent the people away; and they blessed the king, and went to their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that Yahweh had shown to David his servant, and to Israel his people.

  1 It happened, when Solomon had finished the building of the house of Yahweh, and the king's house, and all Solomon's desire which he was pleased to do,
  
  2 that Yahweh appeared to Solomon the second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon.
  
  3 Yahweh said to him, "I have heard your prayer and your supplication, that you have made before me. I have made this house holy, which you have built, to put my name there forever; and my eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually.
  
  4 As for you, if you will walk before me, as David your father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded you, and will keep my statutes and my ordinances;
  
  5 then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, according as I promised to David your father, saying, 'There shall not fail you a man on the throne of Israel.'
  
  6 But if you turn away from following me, you or your children, and not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;
  
  7 then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have made holy for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all peoples.
  
  8 Though this house is so high, yet shall everyone who passes by it be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, 'Why has Yahweh done thus to this land, and to this house?'
  
  9 and they shall answer, 'Because they forsook Yahweh their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold of other gods, and worshiped them, and served them. Therefore Yahweh has brought all this evil on them.'"
  
  10 It happened at the end of twenty years, in which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of Yahweh and the king's house
  
  11 (now Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished Solomon with cedar trees and fir trees, and with gold, according to all his desire), that then king Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.
  
  12 Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him; and they didn't please him.
  
  13 He said, "What cities are these which you have given me, my brother?" He called them the land of Cabul to this day.
  
  14 Hiram sent to the king one hundred twenty talents of gold.
  
  15 This is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised, to build the house of Yahweh, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.
  
  16 Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the Canaanites who lived in the city, and given it for a portion to his daughter, Solomon's wife.
  
  17 Solomon built Gezer, and Beth Horon the lower,
  
  18 and Baalath, and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land,
  
  19 and all the storage cities that Solomon had, and the cities for his chariots, and the cities for his horsemen, and that which Solomon desired to build for his pleasure in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.
  
  20 As for all the people who were left of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the children of Israel;
  
  21 their children who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel were not able utterly to destroy, of them Solomon raised a levy of bondservants to this day.
  
  22 But of the children of Israel Solomon made no bondservants; but they were the men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his chariots and of his horsemen.
  
  23 These were the chief officers who were over Solomon's work, five hundred fifty, who bore rule over the people who labored in the work.
  
  24 But Pharaoh's daughter came up out of the city of David to her house which Solomon had built for her: then he built Millo.
  
  25 Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar which he built to Yahweh three times a year, burning incense with them, on the altar that was before Yahweh. So he finished the house.
  
  26 King Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion Geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red Sea , in the land of Edom.
  
  27 Hiram sent in the navy his servants, sailors who had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon.
  
  28 They came to Ophir, and fetched from there gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon.

  1 When the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of Yahweh, she came to prove him with hard questions.
  
  2 She came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bore spices, and very much gold, and precious stones; and when she had come to Solomon, she talked with him of all that was in her heart.
  
  3 Solomon told her all her questions: there was not anything hidden from the king which he didn't tell her.
  
  4 When the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built,
  
  5 and the food of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their clothing, and his cup bearers, and his ascent by which he went up to the house of Yahweh; there was no more spirit in her.
  
  6 She said to the king, "It was a true report that I heard in my own land of your acts, and of your wisdom.
  
  7 However I didn't believe the words, until I came, and my eyes had seen it. Behold, the half was not told me! Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame which I heard.
  
  8 Happy are your men, happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you, who hear your wisdom.
  
  9 Blessed is Yahweh your God, who delighted in you, to set you on the throne of Israel. Because Yahweh loved Israel forever, therefore made he you king, to do justice and righteousness."
  
  10 She gave the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones. There came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.
  
  11 The navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great plenty of almug trees and precious stones.
  
  12 The king made of the almug trees pillars for the house of Yahweh, and for the king's house, harps also and stringed instruments for the singers: there came no such almug trees, nor were seen, to this day.
  
  13 King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatever she asked, besides that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned, and went to her own land, she and her servants.
  
  14 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred sixty-six talents of gold,
  
  15 besides that which the traders brought, and the traffic of the merchants, and of all the kings of the mixed people, and of the governors of the country.
  
  16 King Solomon made two hundred bucklers of beaten gold; six hundred shekels of gold went to one buckler.
  
  17 he made three hundred shields of beaten gold; three minas of gold went to one shield: and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.
  
  18 Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with the finest gold.
  
  19 There were six steps to the throne, and the top of the throne was round behind; and there were stays on either side by the place of the seat, and two lions standing beside the stays.
  
  20 Twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other on the six steps: there was nothing like it made in any kingdom.
  
  21 All king Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold: none were of silver; it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.
  
  22 For the king had at sea a navy of Tarshish with the navy of Hiram: once every three years came the navy of Tarshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.
  
  23 So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom.
  
  24 All the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.
  
  25 They brought every man his tribute, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and clothing, and armor, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year.
  
  26 Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, that he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.
  
  27 The king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycamore trees that are in the lowland, for abundance.
  
  28 The horses which Solomon had were brought out of Egypt; and the king's merchants received them in droves, each drove at a price.
  
  29 A chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for one hundred fifty; and so for all the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, they brought them out by their means.

  1 Now king Solomon loved many foreign women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites;
  
  2 of the nations concerning which Yahweh said to the children of Israel, "You shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods." Solomon joined to these in love.
  
  3 He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.
  
  4 For it happened, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his God, as was the heart of David his father.
  
  5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
  
  6 Solomon did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and didn't go fully after Yahweh, as did David his father.
  
  7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the mountain that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon.
  
  8 So he did for all his foreign wives, who burnt incense and sacrificed to their gods.
  
  9 Yahweh was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from Yahweh, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice,
  
  10 and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he didn't keep that which Yahweh commanded.
  
  11 Therefore Yahweh said to Solomon, "Because this is done by you, and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant.
  
  12 Notwithstanding I will not do it in your days, for David your father's sake; but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.
  
  13 However I will not tear away all the kingdom; but I will give one tribe to your son, for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen."
  
  14 Yahweh raised up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he was of the king's seed in Edom.
  
  15 For it happened, when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the army was gone up to bury the slain, and had struck every male in Edom
  
  16 (for Joab and all Israel remained there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom);
  
  17 that Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father's servants with him, to go into Egypt, Hadad being yet a little child.
  
  18 They arose out of Midian, and came to Paran; and they took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house, and appointed him food, and gave him land.
  
  19 Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him as wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.
  
  20 The sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh's house among the sons of Pharaoh.
  
  21 When Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, "Let me depart, that I may go to my own country."
  
  22 Then Pharaoh said to him, "But what have you lacked with me, that behold, you seek to go to your own country?" He answered, "Nothing, however only let me depart."
  
  23 God raised up an adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah.
  
  24 He gathered men to him, and became captain over a troop, when David killed them of Zobah: and they went to Damascus, and lived therein, and reigned in Damascus.
  
  25 He was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, besides the mischief of Hadad: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.
  
  26 Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow, he also lifted up his hand against the king.
  
  27 This was the reason why he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breach of the city of David his father.
  
  28 The man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon saw the young man that he was industrious, and he put him in charge of all the labor of the house of Joseph.
  
  29 It happened at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; now Ahijah had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field.
  
  30 Ahijah laid hold of the new garment that was on him, and tore it in twelve pieces.
  
  31 He said to Jeroboam, "Take ten pieces; for thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, 'Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to you
  
  32 (but he shall have one tribe, for my servant David's sake and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel);
  
  33 because that they have forsaken me, and have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon. They have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in my eyes, and to keep my statutes and my ordinances, as David his father did.
  
  34 "'However I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand; but I will make him prince all the days of his life, for David my servant's sake whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes;
  
  35 but I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it to you, even ten tribes.
  
  36 To his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a lamp always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.
  
  37 I will take you, and you shall reign according to all that your soul desires, and shall be king over Israel.
  
  38 It shall be, if you will listen to all that I command you, and will walk in my ways, and do that which is right in my eyes, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with you, and will build you a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel to you.
  
  39 I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not forever.'"
  
  40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam; but Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
  
  41 Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, aren't they written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
  
  42 The time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.
  
  43 Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.

  16 Maintenant, j’ai une demande à te faire. Ne me repousse pas ! » Elle lui répondit : « Parle ! »
  
  17 Et il dit : « Je t’en prie, dis au roi Salomon de me donner pour femme Abishag, la Sunamite, car il ne te repoussera pas. »
  
  18 Bath-Shéba dit : « Bien ! Je parlerai au roi en ta faveur. »
  
  19 Bath-Shéba alla donc trouver le roi Salomon pour lui parler en faveur d'Adonija. Le roi se leva pour aller à sa rencontre et se prosterna devant elle, puis il s'assit sur son trône. Le roi fit placer un trône pour sa mère et elle s'assit à sa droite.
  
  20 Elle dit alors : « J'ai une petite demande à te faire. Ne me repousse pas ! » Le roi lui dit : « Fais ta demande, ma mère, car je ne te repousserai pas. »
  
  21 Elle dit : « Qu'Abishag, la Sunamite, soit donnée pour femme à ton frère Adonija ! »
  
  22 Le roi Salomon répondit à sa mère : « Pourquoi demandes-tu Abishag, la Sunamite, pour Adonija ? Demande donc la royauté pour lui, puisqu’il est mon frère aîné ! Demande-la pour lui, pour le prêtre Abiathar et pour Joab, le fils de Tseruja ! »
  
  23 Alors le roi Salomon prêta ce serment par l'Eternel : « Que Dieu me traite avec la plus grande sévérité, si ce n'est pas au prix de sa vie qu'Adonija a prononcé cette parole !
  
  24 Maintenant, l'Eternel est vivant, lui qui m'a solidement établi et m'a fait asseoir sur le trône de mon père David et qui m'a donné une maison, conformément à sa promesse ! Aujourd'hui Adonija mourra. »
  
  25 Puis le roi Salomon fit frapper Adonija par l’intermédiaire de Benaja, le fils de Jehojada, et il mourut.
  
  26 Le roi dit ensuite au prêtre Abiathar : « Va-t'en à Anathoth dans tes terres. En effet, tu mérites la mort, mais je ne te ferai pas mourir aujourd'hui, parce que tu as porté l'arche du Seigneur, de l'Eternel, devant mon père David et parce que tu as pris part à toutes ses souffrances. »
  
  27 Salomon démit Abiathar de ses fonctions de prêtre de l'Eternel, et ainsi s’accomplit la parole que l'Eternel avait prononcée contre la famille d'Eli à Silo.
  
  28 La nouvelle en parvint à Joab, et il se réfugia dans la tente de l'Eternel et s’accrocha aux cornes de l'autel. En effet, il avait suivi le parti d'Adonija, alors qu'il n'avait pas suivi celui d'Absalom.
  
  29 On annonça au roi Salomon que Joab s'était réfugié dans la tente de l'Eternel et qu'il se trouvait à côté de l'autel. Salomon envoya Benaja, le fils de Jehojada, en lui disant : « Va le frapper ! »
  
  30 Benaja arriva à la tente de l'Eternel et dit à Joab : « Sors ! C'est le roi qui l'ordonne. » Mais il répondit : « Non ! Je veux mourir ici. » Benaja rapporta cette parole au roi en disant : « Voilà ce qu'a dit Joab, voilà ce qu'il m'a répondu. »
  
  31 Le roi dit à Benaja : « Fais comme il l’a dit, frappe-le et enterre-le. Tu écarteras ainsi de moi et de ma famille le sang que Joab a versé sans raison.
  
  32 L'Eternel fera retomber son sang sur sa tête, parce qu'il a frappé deux hommes plus justes et meilleurs que lui et les a tués par l'épée, sans que mon père David le sache. Je veux parler d’Abner, le fils de Ner, qui était le chef de l'armée d'Israël et d’Amasa, le fils de Jéther, qui était le chef de l'armée de Juda.
  
  33 Leur sang retombera pour toujours sur la tête de Joab et de sa descendance. En revanche, l’Eternel accordera pour toujours la paix à David, à sa descendance, à sa famille et à son trône. »
  
  34 Benaja, le fils de Jehojada, monta à la tente de l’Eternel et frappa Joab à mort. Il fut enterré chez lui, dans le désert.
  
  35 Le roi mit Benaja, le fils de Jehojada, à la tête de l'armée à la place de Joab et il établit le prêtre Tsadok à la place d'Abiathar.
  
  36 Le roi fit appeler Shimeï et lui dit : « Construis-toi une maison à Jérusalem. Tu y habiteras et tu n'en sortiras pas pour aller ici ou là.
  
  37 Sache bien que tu mourras le jour où tu sortiras de la ville et passeras le torrent du Cédron. Tu seras toi-même responsable de ta mort. »
  
  38 Shimeï répondit au roi : « C'est bien ! Moi, ton serviteur, je ferai ce que dit mon seigneur le roi. » Et Shimeï habita longtemps à Jérusalem.
  
  39 Au bout de 3 ans, deux de ses esclaves s'enfuirent chez Akish, fils de Maaca et roi de Gath. On annonça à Shimeï : « Tes esclaves sont à Gath. »
  
  40 Shimeï se leva, sella son âne et se rendit à Gath chez Akish pour aller chercher ses esclaves. Shimeï partit donc et il ramena ses esclaves de Gath.
  
  41 On informa Salomon que Shimeï était allé de Jérusalem à Gath et qu'il était de retour.
  
  42 Le roi fit appeler Shimeï et lui dit : « Je t'avais fait prêter serment par l'Eternel et je t'avais fait cette déclaration formelle : ‘Sache bien que tu mourras le jour où tu sortiras de la ville pour aller ici ou là.’Tu m’avais répondu : ‘C'est bien ! J'ai compris’, n’est-ce pas ?
  
  43 Pourquoi donc n'as-tu pas respecté le serment prêté au nom de l'Eternel et l'ordre que je t'avais donné ? »
  
  44 Puis le roi dit à Shimeï : « Tu sais bien, dans ton cœur, tout le mal que tu as fait à mon père David. L'Eternel fait retomber ta méchanceté sur ta tête.
  
  45 Quant au roi Salomon, il sera béni et le trône de David sera affermi pour toujours devant l'Eternel. »
  
  46 Le roi donna ses instructions à Benaja, le fils de Jehojada. Il sortit et frappa Shimeï à mort. La royauté fut ainsi affermie entre les mains de Salomon.
  
  1 Rois 3
  
  1 Salomon s'allia par mariage avec le pharaon, le roi d'Egypte. Il prit pour femme la fille du pharaon et il l’installa dans la ville de David en attendant d’avoir fini de construire son palais ainsi que la maison de l'Eternel et le mur d'enceinte de Jérusalem.
  
  2 Le peuple n’offrait des sacrifices que sur les hauts lieux, car jusque-là on n'avait pas encore construit de maison en l’honneur de l'Eternel.
  
  3 Salomon aimait l'Eternel, suivant ainsi les prescriptions de son père David. Toutefois, c'était sur les hauts lieux qu'il offrait des sacrifices et des parfums.
  
  4 Le roi se rendit à Gabaon pour y offrir des sacrifices, car c'était le principal des hauts lieux. Salomon offrit 1000 holocaustes sur l'autel.
  
  5 A Gabaon, l'Eternel lui apparut en rêve pendant la nuit et Dieu lui dit : « Demande-moi ce que tu veux que je te donne. »
  
  6 Salomon répondit : « Tu as traité avec une grande bonté ton serviteur David, mon père, parce qu'il marchait en ta présence dans la fidélité et la justice, et avec un cœur droit envers toi. Tu lui as conservé cette grande bonté et tu lui as donné un fils pour siéger sur son trône, comme on le voit aujourd'hui.
  
  7 Maintenant, Eternel mon Dieu, tu m’as établi roi, moi ton serviteur, à la place de mon père David. Or je ne suis qu'un jeune homme, je n'ai pas d'expérience.
  
  8 Ton serviteur se trouve au milieu de ton peuple, celui que tu as choisi, et c’est un peuple immense, si nombreux qu’il ne peut être ni compté ni recensé.
  
  9 Accorde donc à ton serviteur un cœur apte à écouter pour juger ton peuple, pour distinguer le bien du mal ! En effet, qui serait capable de juger ton peuple, ce peuple si important ? »
  
  10 Cette demande de Salomon plut au Seigneur.
  
  11 Et Dieu lui dit : « Puisque c'est cela que tu demandes, puisque tu ne réclames pour toi ni une longue vie, ni les richesses, ni la mort de tes ennemis, mais que tu demandes de l'intelligence pour exercer la justice,
  
  12 je vais agir conformément à ta parole. Je vais te donner un cœur si sage et si intelligent qu'il n'y a eu avant toi et qu'on ne verra jamais personne de pareil à toi.
  
  13 Je te donnerai en outre ce que tu n'as pas demandé : des richesses et de la gloire en si grande quantité qu'il n'y aura pendant toute ta vie aucun roi qui soit ton égal.
  
  14 Et si tu marches dans mes voies en respectant mes prescriptions et mes commandements, comme l'a fait ton père David, je te donnerai une longue vie. »
  
  15 Salomon se réveilla, et voilà quel avait été son rêve. Il revint à Jérusalem et se présenta devant l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur. Il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion, et il fit un festin pour tous ses serviteurs.
  
  16 C’est alors que deux femmes prostituées vinrent chez le roi et se présentèrent devant lui.
  
  17 L'une des femmes dit : « Pardon ! Mon seigneur, cette femme et moi, nous habitons dans la même maison et j'ai accouché près d'elle dans la maison.
  
  18 Trois jours après, cette femme a aussi accouché. Nous habitons ensemble, il n’y a aucun étranger avec nous dans la maison, il n'y a que nous deux.
  
  19 Le fils de cette femme est mort pendant la nuit, parce qu'elle s'était couchée sur lui.
  
  20 Elle s'est levée au milieu de la nuit, elle a pris mon fils qui était à côté de moi pendant que moi, ta servante, je dormais et elle l'a couché contre elle. Quant à son fils, qui était mort, elle l'a couché contre moi.
  
  21 Ce matin, je me suis levée pour allaiter mon fils et voici qu’il était mort. Je l'ai regardé attentivement, le matin venu, et ce n'était pas mon fils, celui que j'ai mis au monde. »
  
  22 L'autre femme dit : « C’est faux ! C'est mon fils qui est vivant et ton fils qui est mort. » Mais la première répliqua : « Absolument pas ! C'est ton fils qui est mort et mon fils qui est vivant. » C'est ainsi qu'elles discutèrent devant le roi.
  
  23 Le roi constata : « L'une dit : ‘C'est mon fils qui est vivant et ton fils qui est mort’, et l'autre dit : ‘Absolument pas ! C'est ton fils qui est mort et mon fils qui est vivant.’ »
  
  24 Puis il ordonna : « Apportez-moi une épée. » On apporta une épée devant le roi.
  
  25 Le roi dit alors : « Coupez en deux l'enfant qui est en vie et donnez-en la moitié à chacune. »
  
  26 Alors la femme dont le fils était vivant fut remplie de compassion pour son fils et elle dit au roi : « Ah ! Mon seigneur, donnez-lui l'enfant qui est en vie, ne le faites pas mourir. » Mais l'autre répliqua : « Il ne sera ni à moi ni à toi. Coupez-le ! »
  
  27 Prenant la parole, le roi dit alors : « Donnez l'enfant qui est en vie à la première femme, ne le faites pas mourir. C'est elle qui est sa mère. »
  
  28 Tout Israël apprit le jugement que le roi avait prononcé et l'on éprouva de la crainte envers lui. En effet, on avait constaté qu’il bénéficiait de la sagesse de Dieu pour exercer la justice.
  
  1 Rois 4
  
  1 Salomon était roi sur tout Israël.
  
  2 Voici les hauts fonctionnaires qu'il avait à son service. Azaria, le petit-fils du prêtre Tsadok,
  
  3 Elihoreph et Achija, le fils de Shisha, étaient secrétaires. Josaphat, le fils d'Achilud, était archiviste.
  
  4 Benaja, le fils de Jehojada, était à la tête de l'armée. Tsadok et Abiathar étaient prêtres.
  
  5 Azaria, le fils de Nathan, était le chef des intendants. Zabud, le fils de Nathan, était prêtre. C’était un proche du roi.
  
  6 Achishar était chef du palais royal et Adoniram, le fils d'Abda, était préposé aux corvées.
  
  7 Salomon avait douze intendants sur tout Israël. Ils pourvoyaient à l'entretien du roi et de son entourage, chacun pendant un mois de l'année.
  
  8 Voici leurs noms : le fils de Hur, dans la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm ;
  
  9 le fils de Déker, à Makats, Saalbim, Beth-Shémesh, Elon et Beth-Hanan ;
  
  10 le fils de Hésed, à Arubboth, qui était responsable de Soco et de toute la région de Hépher ;
  
  11 le fils d'Abinadab, qui était responsable de toute la région de Dor et qui avait Thaphath, la fille de Salomon, pour femme ;
  
  12 Baana, le fils d'Achilud, qui était responsable de Thaanac et Meguiddo, et tout Beth-Shean, toute la région qui se situe près de Tsarthan au-dessous de Jizreel et qui va de Beth-Shean jusqu'à Abel-Mehola et après Jokmeam ;
  
  13 le fils de Guéber, à Ramoth en Galaad, qui était responsable des bourgs de Jaïr, fils de Manassé, en Galaad ainsi que de la région d'Argob en Basan, soit de 60 grandes villes dotées de murailles et de verrous en bronze ;
  
  14 Achinadab, le fils d'Iddo, à Mahanaïm ;
  
  15 Achimaats, qui avait pris pour femme Basmath, la fille de Salomon, en Nephthali ;
  
  16 Baana, le fils de Hushaï, en Aser et à Bealoth ;
  
  17 Josaphat, le fils de Paruach, en Issacar ;
  
  18 Shimeï, le fils d'Ela, en Benjamin ;
  
  19 Guéber, le fils d'Uri, dans le pays de Galaad. Ce dernier était responsable de la région de Sihon, le roi des Amoréens, et d'Og, le roi du Basan. Il y avait un seul intendant pour ce pays.
  
  20 Juda et Israël étaient aussi nombreux que le sable qui est au bord de la mer. Ils mangeaient, buvaient et se réjouissaient.
  
  1 Rois 5
  
  1 Salomon dominait sur tous les royaumes situés entre l’Euphrate et le pays des Philistins, et jusqu'à la frontière de l'Egypte. Ils apportaient un tribut à Salomon et ils lui furent asservis durant toute sa vie.
  
  2 Chaque jour Salomon consommait en vivres : 6600 litres de fleur de farine et 13'200 litres de farine,
  
  3 10 bœufs engraissés, 20 bœufs de pâturage et 100 brebis, en plus des cerfs, des gazelles, des daims et des volailles engraissées.
  
  4 Son pouvoir s’étendait sur toute la région située à l’ouest de l’Euphrate, sur tous les rois établis à l’ouest de l’Euphrate. Son pouvoir s’étendait de Thiphsach à Gaza, et il avait la paix de tous les côtés.
  
  5 Juda et Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer-Shéba, habitèrent en sécurité, chacun au milieu de ses vignes et de ses figuiers durant tout le règne de Salomon.
  
  6 Salomon avait 40'000 stalles pour les chevaux destinés à ses chars et 12'000 cavaliers.
  
  7 Les intendants pourvoyaient à l'entretien du roi Salomon et de tous ceux qui étaient admis à sa table, chacun pendant le mois qui lui était attribué. Ils ne les laissaient manquer de rien.
  
  8 Ils faisaient aussi venir de l'orge et de la paille pour les chevaux et les coursiers à l'endroit où se trouvait le roi, chacun selon ses directives.
  
  9 Dieu donna à Salomon de la sagesse, une très grande intelligence et des connaissances aussi nombreuses que le sable qui est au bord de la mer.
  
  10 La sagesse de Salomon dépassait celle de tous les nomades de l’est et toute la sagesse des Egyptiens.
  
  11 Il était plus sage que n’importe quel homme, plus sage qu'Ethan, l'Ezrachite, ou qu'Héman, Calcol et Darda, les fils de Machol, et son nom était connu parmi toutes les nations environnantes.
  
  12 Il a prononcé 3000 sentences et composé 1005 cantiques.
  
  13 Il a parlé des arbres, depuis le cèdre du Liban jusqu'à l'hysope qui sort de la muraille. Il a aussi parlé des animaux, des oiseaux, des reptiles et des poissons.
  
  14 De tous les peuples on venait pour écouter la sagesse de Salomon, de la part de tous les rois de la terre qui en avaient entendu parler.
  
  15 Hiram, le roi de Tyr, envoya ses serviteurs vers Salomon, lorsqu’il apprit qu'on l'avait consacré par onction comme roi à la place de son père. En effet, il avait toujours aimé David.
  
  16 Salomon fit dire à Hiram :
  
  17 « Tu sais que mon père David n'a pas pu construire de maison pour l'Eternel, son Dieu, à cause des guerres qu’on lui a livrées de tous les côtés jusqu'à ce que l'Eternel lui ait soumis ses ennemis.
  
  18 Désormais, l'Eternel, mon Dieu, m'a donné du repos de tous les côtés : plus d'adversaires, plus de malheur qui menace !
  
  19 J'ai l'intention de construire une maison en l’honneur de l'Eternel, mon Dieu, comme l'Eternel l'a déclaré à mon père David : ‘Ton fils, celui que je mettrai à ta place sur ton trône, ce sera lui qui me construira une maison.’
  
  20 Ordonne maintenant que l'on coupe pour moi des cèdres du Liban. Mes serviteurs seront avec les tiens et je te paierai le salaire de tes serviteurs au prix que tu auras fixé. Tu le sais en effet, il n'y a personne chez nous qui sache couper aussi bien les arbres que les Sidoniens. »
  
  21 Lorsqu'il entendit les paroles de Salomon, Hiram fut tout réjoui et il dit : « Béni soit aujourd'hui l'Eternel, qui a donné à David un fils sage pour qu’il devienne le chef de ce grand peuple ! »
  
  22 Et il fit répondre à Salomon : « J'ai bien entendu ce que tu m'as envoyé dire. Je vais faire tout ce que tu désires au sujet des cèdres et des cyprès.
  
  23 Mes serviteurs les descendront des montagnes du Liban jusqu’à la mer et je les expédierai par mer, attachés en radeaux, jusqu'à l'endroit que tu m'indiqueras. Là, je les ferai détacher et tu pourras les prendre. Quant à toi, ce que je désire, c'est que tu fournisses des vivres pour ma maison. »
  
  24 Hiram donna à Salomon autant de bois de cèdre et de cyprès qu'il voulut.
  
  25 De son côté, Salomon donna à Hiram 4'400'000 litres de blé pour l'entretien de sa maison ainsi que 4400 litres d'huile d'olives vierge. Voilà ce que Salomon donna chaque année à Hiram.
  
  26 L'Eternel avait donné de la sagesse à Salomon, comme il le lui avait promis. La paix régna entre Hiram et lui, et ils firent alliance ensemble.
  
  27 Le roi Salomon leva sur tout Israël 30'000 hommes de corvée.
  
  28 Il les envoya au Liban, 10'000 par mois alternativement. Ils étaient un mois au Liban et deux mois chez eux. Adoniram était responsable de ces hommes.
  
  29 Salomon disposait encore de 70'000 hommes pour porter les fardeaux et de 80'000 pour tailler les pierres dans la montagne,
  
  30 sans compter les chefs. Ils étaient au nombre de 3300, désignés par Salomon comme responsables des travaux et chargés de surveiller les ouvriers.
  
  31 Le roi ordonna d'extraire de grandes et magnifiques pierres de taille pour les fondations du temple.
  
  32 Les ouvriers de Salomon, ceux de Hiram et les artisans de Guebal les taillèrent. Ils préparèrent ainsi le bois et les pierres nécessaires pour construire le temple.
  
  1 Rois 6
  
  1 Ce fut 480 ans après la sortie d'Egypte des Israélites que Salomon commença de construire la maison destinée à l'Eternel, la quatrième année de son règne sur Israël, durant le mois de Ziv, qui est le deuxième mois.
  
  2 La maison que le roi Salomon construisit en l’honneur de l'Eternel avait 30 mètres de long, 10 de large et 15 de haut.
  
  3 Le portique situé devant le lieu saint du temple avait 10 mètres de long, correspondant à la largeur du temple, et 5 de profondeur sur le devant du temple.
  
  4 Le roi fit au temple des fenêtres solidement grillagées.
  
  5 Il construisit contre le mur du temple des étages circulaires, qui faisaient le tour des murs du temple, du lieu saint et du sanctuaire. Il fit des chambres latérales tout autour.
  
  6 L'étage inférieur était large de 2 mètres et demi, celui du milieu de 3 et le troisième de 3 et demi. En effet, il ménagea des retraits tout autour du temple, à l’extérieur, afin que la charpente ne pénètre pas dans les murs du temple.
  
  7 Lorsqu'on construisit le temple, on se servit de pierres toutes taillées. On n’entendit ni marteau, ni hache, ni aucun instrument en fer dans le temple pendant qu'on le construisait.
  
  8 L'entrée des chambres de l'étage inférieur se trouvait sur le côté droit du temple. On montait à l'étage du milieu par un escalier tournant, et de l'étage du milieu au troisième.
  
  9 Lorsqu’il eut fini de construire le temple, Salomon lui fit un plafond de planches et de poutres de cèdre.
  
  10 Il donna 2 mètres et demi de hauteur à chacun des étages qui faisaient tout le tour du temple, et il les rattacha à la maison par des poutres de cèdre.
  
  11 L'Eternel adressa la parole à Salomon :
  
  12 « Te voilà en train de construire ce temple ! Si tu suis mes prescriptions, si tu mets mes règles en pratique, si tu respectes et gardes tous mes commandements, j'accomplirai la promesse que j'ai faite à ton père David envers toi :
  
  13 j'habiterai au milieu des Israélites et je n'abandonnerai pas mon peuple, Israël. »
  
  14 Lorsqu’il eut fini de construire le temple,
  
  15 Salomon revêtit ses murs intérieurs de planches de cèdre, depuis le sol jusqu'au plafond. Il revêtit ainsi de bois l'intérieur et il couvrit le sol de la maison de planches de cyprès.
  
  16 Il revêtit de planches de cèdre les 10 mètres du fond du temple, depuis le sol jusqu'en haut des murs, et il réserva cet espace pour en faire le sanctuaire, le lieu très saint.
  
  17 Les 20 mètres sur le devant formaient la maison, c'est-à-dire le temple.
  
  18 Le cèdre à l'intérieur de la maison présentait des sculptures de coloquintes et de fleurs entrouvertes. Tout était en cèdre, on ne voyait aucune pierre.
  
  19 Salomon établit le sanctuaire à l'intérieur, au milieu du temple, pour y placer l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel.
  
  20 Il avait 10 mètres de long, 10 de large et 10 de haut, et Salomon le couvrit d'or pur. Il fit devant le sanctuaire un autel en cèdre et le couvrit d'or.
  
  21 Il couvrit d'or pur l'intérieur du temple et il fit passer le voile dans des chaînettes d'or devant le sanctuaire, qu'il couvrit d'or.
  
  22 Il couvrit d'or tout le temple, le temple tout entier, et il couvrit d'or tout l'autel qui se trouvait devant le sanctuaire.
  
  23 Il fit dans le sanctuaire deux chérubins en olivier sauvage, hauts de 5 mètres.
  
  24 Chacune des deux ailes d'un chérubin faisait 2 mètres et demi, ce qui faisait 5 mètres de l'extrémité d'une de ses ailes à l'autre.
  
  25 Le second chérubin faisait aussi 5 mètres. La mesure et la forme des deux chérubins étaient identiques.
  
  26 La hauteur de chacun des deux était de 5 mètres.
  
  27 Salomon plaça les chérubins au milieu du temple, à l'intérieur. Leurs ailes étaient déployées : l'aile du premier touchait l'un des murs, et celle du second l'autre mur ; les bouts de leurs autres ailes se touchaient au milieu du temple.
  
  28 Salomon couvrit d'or les chérubins.
  
  29 Il fit sculpter sur tout le pourtour des murs de la maison, à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur, des chérubins, des palmes et des fleurs entrouvertes.
  
  30 Il couvrit d'or le sol de la maison, à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur.
  
  31 Il fit à l'entrée du sanctuaire une porte à deux battants, en olivier sauvage. L'encadrement avec les poteaux équivalait à un cinquième du mur.
  
  32 Les deux battants étaient en olivier sauvage. Il y fit sculpter des chérubins, des palmes et des fleurs entrouvertes, et il les couvrit d'or. Il plaqua aussi de l'or sur les chérubins et sur les palmes.
  
  33 De même, il fit pour la porte du temple des poteaux en olivier sauvage, qui faisaient le quart de la dimension du mur,
  
  34 et deux battants en cyprès. Chacun des battants était formé de deux planches pivotantes.
  
  35 Il y fit sculpter des chérubins, des palmes et des fleurs entrouvertes, et il les couvrit d'or qu'il étendit sur la sculpture.
  
  36 Il construisit le parvis intérieur grâce à trois rangées de pierres de taille et une rangée de poutres de cèdre.
  
  37 La quatrième année du règne de Salomon, au mois de Ziv, les fondations de la maison de l'Eternel furent posées.
  
  38 La onzième année, au mois de Bul, qui est le huitième mois, elle fut terminée dans toutes ses parties et elle fut telle qu'elle devait être. On mit 7 ans à la construire.
  
  1 Rois 7
  
  1 Salomon construisit encore son palais. Cela prit 13 ans jusqu'à ce qu'il l'ait entièrement terminé.
  
  2 Il construisit d'abord le bâtiment appelé « maison de la forêt du Liban ». Il était long de 50 mètres, large de 25 et haut de 15. Il était construit sur quatre rangées de colonnes en cèdre et il y avait des poutres de cèdre sur les colonnes.
  
  3 On couvrit de cèdre les chambres supportées par les colonnes. Il y en avait 45, soit 15 par étage.
  
  4 Il y avait trois étages, et à chaque étage se trouvaient des fenêtres, les unes vis-à-vis des autres.
  
  5 Toutes les portes et tous les poteaux étaient faits de poutres, de forme rectangulaire. A chacun des trois étages, les ouvertures se trouvaient les unes vis-à-vis des autres.
  
  6 Il fit le « portique des colonnes », long de 25 mètres et large de 15, ainsi qu’un autre portique par-devant, avec des colonnes et un auvent sur la façade.
  
  7 Il fit le « portique du trône », ou « portique du jugement », où il rendait la justice, et il le couvrit de cèdre, depuis le sol jusqu'au plafond.
  
  8 Son bâtiment d'habitation fut construit de la même manière, dans une autre cour, derrière le portique. Il fit aussi un bâtiment du même genre que ce portique pour la fille du pharaon, qu'il avait prise pour femme.
  
  9 Pour toutes ces constructions, on employa de magnifiques pierres, taillées sur mesure, sciées avec la scie sur leur face intérieure et extérieure. On employa ces pierres depuis les fondations jusqu'aux corniches, et à l’extérieur jusqu'à la grande cour.
  
  10 Les fondations étaient en pierres magnifiques et de grande dimension, en pierres de 5 et de 4 mètres.
  
  11 Au-dessus il y avait encore de magnifiques pierres, taillées sur mesure, et du cèdre.
  
  12 Tout autour de la grande cour, il y avait trois rangées de pierres de taille et une rangée de poutres de cèdre, comme pour le parvis intérieur et le portique de la maison de l’Eternel.
  
  13 Le roi Salomon fit venir de Tyr un certain Hiram.
  
  14 C’était le fils d'une veuve membre de la tribu de Nephthali et d'un père tyrien, et il travaillait le bronze. Hiram était rempli de sagesse, d'intelligence et de savoir-faire pour fabriquer toutes sortes d'objets en bronze. Il arriva auprès du roi Salomon et il réalisa tous ses travaux.
  
  15 Il fit les deux colonnes de bronze. La première faisait 9 mètres de haut, et on pouvait mesurer la circonférence de la seconde avec un fil de 6 mètres.
  
  16 Il fondit deux chapiteaux de bronze, pour les mettre sur les sommets des colonnes. Le premier faisait 2 mètres et demi de haut, tout comme le second.
  
  17 Il fit des treillis en forme de réseaux, des festons façonnés en chaînettes, pour les chapiteaux qui étaient sur le sommet des colonnes : 7 pour le premier chapiteau, et 7 pour le second.
  
  18 Il fit deux rangées de grenades autour de l'un des treillis, pour couvrir le chapiteau qui était sur le sommet d'une des colonnes. Il fit de même pour le second.
  
  19 Les chapiteaux qui étaient sur le sommet des colonnes placées dans le portique représentaient des lis et faisaient 2 mètres.
  
  20 Les chapiteaux placés sur les deux colonnes étaient entourés de 200 grenades, en haut, près du renflement qui dépassait le treillis. Il y avait aussi 200 grenades rangées autour du second chapiteau.
  
  21 Il dressa les colonnes dans le portique du temple. Il dressa la colonne de droite et l’appela Jakin, puis il dressa la colonne de gauche et l’appela Boaz.
  
  22 Il y avait sur le sommet des colonnes une sculpture qui représentait des lis. Ainsi fut terminée la fabrication des colonnes.
  
  23 Il fit la cuve en métal fondu. Elle faisait 5 mètres d'un bord à l'autre et était entièrement ronde. Elle faisait 2 mètres et demi de haut et l’on pouvait mesurer sa circonférence avec un cordon de 15 mètres.
  
  24 Des coloquintes en faisaient le tour, sous le rebord, 20 par mètre, sur tout le pourtour de la cuve ; disposées sur deux rangs, les coloquintes avaient été fondues avec elle d’une seule pièce.
  
  25 Elle était posée sur 12 bœufs, 3 tournés vers le nord, 3 vers l'ouest, 3 vers le sud et 3 vers l'est ; la cuve reposait sur eux et toute la partie postérieure de leur corps était à l’intérieur.
  
  26 Elle était épaisse de 8 centimètres et son bord, pareil à celui d'une coupe, avait la forme d’une fleur de lis. Elle pouvait contenir 44'000 litres.
  
  27 Il fit les dix bases en bronze. Chacune faisait 2 mètres de long, 2 de large et un et demi de haut.
  
  28 Voici en quoi consistaient ces bases : elles étaient formées de panneaux attachés aux coins par des montants.
  
  29 Sur les panneaux qui étaient entre les montants figuraient des lions, des bœufs et des chérubins. Sur les montants, au-dessus comme au-dessous des lions et des bœufs, il y avait des ornements qui pendaient en festons.
  
  30 Chaque base avait quatre roues en bronze avec des essieux en bronze. Aux quatre angles se trouvaient des épaulements en métal fondu, au-dessous du bassin et plus bas que les festons.
  
  31 Le couronnement d’une base présentait à l’intérieur une ouverture qui se prolongeait de 50 centimètres vers le haut. Cette ouverture était ronde, comme pour les objets de ce genre, et elle faisait 75 centimètres de large ; il s'y trouvait aussi des sculptures. Les panneaux étaient carrés, et non arrondis.
  
  32 Les quatre roues se trouvaient sous les panneaux, et les essieux des roues étaient fixés à la base : chacune faisait 75 centimètres de haut.
  
  33 Les roues étaient faites comme celles d'un char. Leurs essieux, leurs jantes, leurs rayons et leurs moyeux, tout était en métal fondu.
  
  34 Il y avait aux quatre angles de chaque base quatre épaulements de la même pièce que la base.
  
  35 La partie supérieure de la base se terminait par un cercle de 25 centimètres de hauteur, et ses appuis et ses panneaux étaient faits de la même pièce.
  
  36 Sur les plaques des appuis et sur les panneaux, il grava des chérubins, des lions et des palmes, en fonction de la place disponible, ainsi que des guirlandes tout autour.
  
  37 C'est ainsi qu'il fit les dix bases : le métal fondu, la mesure et la forme étaient les mêmes pour toutes.
  
  38 Il fit 10 bassins en bronze. Chaque bassin pouvait contenir 880 litres, faisait 2 mètres et reposait sur l'une des dix bases.
  
  39 Il plaça 5 bases sur le côté droit du temple, et 5 sur le côté gauche. Quant à la cuve, il la plaça du côté droit du temple, au sud-est.
  
  40 Hiram fabriqua encore les cendriers, les pelles et les coupes. C’est ainsi qu’Hiram termina tout le travail que le roi Salomon lui fit faire pour la maison de l'Eternel :
  
  41 deux colonnes, avec les deux chapiteaux et leurs bourrelets sur le sommet des colonnes ; les deux treillis, pour couvrir les deux bourrelets des chapiteaux sur le sommet des colonnes ;
  
  42 les 400 grenades pour les deux treillis, deux rangées de grenades par treillis, pour couvrir les deux bourrelets des chapiteaux sur le sommet des colonnes ;
  
  43 les 10 bases avec les 10 bassins qui vont dessus ;
  
  44 la cuve et les 12 bœufs qui vont sous la cuve ;
  
  45 les cendriers, les pelles et les coupes. Tous ces ustensiles que le roi Salomon fit faire à Hiram pour la maison de l'Eternel étaient en bronze poli.
  
  46 Le roi les fit fondre dans la plaine du Jourdain dans un sol argileux, entre Succoth et Tsarthan.
  
  47 Salomon laissa faire tous ces ustensiles sans vérifier le poids du bronze, tant il y en avait.
  
  48 Salomon fit encore tous les autres ustensiles pour la maison de l'Eternel : l'autel en or ; la table en or sur laquelle on mettait les pains consacrés ;
  
  49 les chandeliers en or pur, cinq à droite et cinq à gauche, devant le sanctuaire, avec les fleurs, les lampes et les mouchettes d'or ;
  
  50 les bassins, les couteaux, les coupes, les tasses et les brûle-parfums en or pur ; les gonds en or pour la porte située à l'intérieur du temple, à l'entrée du lieu très saint, et pour la porte de la salle située à l'entrée du temple.
  
  51 Ainsi fut terminé tout le travail que le roi Salomon fit pour la maison de l'Eternel. Puis il apporta l'argent, l'or et les ustensiles que son père David avait consacrés et il les mit parmi les trésors de la maison de l'Eternel.
  
  1 Rois 8
  
  1 Alors le roi Salomon rassembla près de lui, à Jérusalem, les anciens d'Israël et tous les chefs des tribus et les chefs de famille des Israélites, pour déplacer l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel depuis la ville de David, c’est-à-dire Sion.
  
  2 Tous les hommes d'Israël se réunirent auprès du roi Salomon, au cours du mois d'Ethanim, qui est le septième mois, pendant la fête des tentes.
  
  3 Lorsque tous les anciens d'Israël furent arrivés, les prêtres portèrent l'arche.
  
  4 Ils transportèrent l'arche de l'Eternel, la tente de la rencontre ainsi que tous les ustensiles sacrés qui étaient dans la tente. Ce furent les prêtres et les Lévites qui les transportèrent.
  
  5 Le roi Salomon et toute l'assemblée d'Israël convoquée vers lui se tinrent devant l'arche. Ils sacrifièrent des brebis et des bœufs, en si grand nombre qu’ils ne purent être ni comptés ni recensés.
  
  6 Les prêtres amenèrent l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel à sa place, dans le sanctuaire du temple, dans le lieu très saint, sous les ailes des chérubins.
  
  7 En effet, les chérubins avaient les ailes étendues sur l’emplacement occupé par l'arche et ils couvraient le coffre et ses barres.
  
  8 On avait donné aux barres une longueur telle que leurs extrémités se voyaient du lieu saint situé devant le sanctuaire, mais pas de l’extérieur. Telle a été leur place jusqu'à aujourd’hui.
  
  9 Il n'y avait dans l'arche que les deux tables de pierre que Moïse y avait déposées à Horeb, lorsque l'Eternel avait fait alliance avec les Israélites, à leur sortie d'Egypte.
  
  10 Au moment où les prêtres sortirent du lieu saint, la nuée remplit la maison de l'Eternel.
  
  11 Les prêtres ne purent pas y reprendre leur service à cause de la nuée. La gloire de l'Eternel remplissait en effet la maison de l'Eternel.
  
  12 Alors Salomon dit : « L'Eternel a déclaré vouloir habiter dans l'obscurité.
  
  13 Et moi, j'ai construit une maison qui sera ta résidence, un endroit où tu habiteras éternellement. »
  
  14 Puis le roi se retourna et bénit toute l'assemblée d'Israël qui se tenait debout.
  
  15 Il dit : « Béni soit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, qui de sa bouche a parlé à mon père David et qui accomplit par sa puissance ce qu'il avait déclaré. Il avait dit :
  
  16 ‘Depuis le jour où j'ai fait sortir d'Egypte mon peuple, Israël, je n'ai pas choisi de ville parmi toutes les tribus d'Israël pour qu'on y construise une maison où réside mon nom, mais j'ai choisi David pour qu'il règne sur mon peuple, Israël.’
  
  17 David, mon père, avait l'intention de construire une maison en l’honneur de l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël,
  
  18 et l'Eternel a dit à mon père David : ‘Tu as eu l'intention de construire une maison en l’honneur de mon nom et tu as bien fait.
  
  19 Seulement, ce ne sera pas toi qui le feras, ce sera ton fils, celui qui est issu de toi, qui construira cette maison en l’honneur de mon nom.’
  
  20 L'Eternel a accompli la parole qu'il avait prononcée : je me suis élevé à la place de mon père David et me suis assis sur le trône d'Israël, comme l'avait annoncé l'Eternel, et j'ai construit cette maison en l’honneur de l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
  
  21 J'y ai réservé un endroit pour le coffre qui contient l'alliance de l'Eternel, l'alliance qu'il a conclue avec nos ancêtres quand il les a fait sortir d'Egypte. »
  
  22 Salomon se plaça devant l'autel de l'Eternel, en face de toute l'assemblée d'Israël. Il tendit ses mains vers le ciel et dit :
  
  23 « Eternel, Dieu d'Israël ! Il n'y a aucun dieu qui soit ton pareil, ni en haut dans le ciel ni en bas sur la terre : tu gardes ton alliance et ta bonté envers tes serviteurs, envers ceux qui marchent devant toi de tout leur cœur !
  
  24 Ainsi, tu as tenu parole envers ton serviteur David, mon père. Ce que tu avais déclaré de ta bouche, tu l'accomplis aujourd’hui par ta puissance.
  
  25 Maintenant, Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, respecte la promesse que tu as faite à mon père David, lorsque tu as dit : ‘*Tu ne manqueras jamais devant moi d'un successeur pour siéger sur le trône d'Israël, pourvu que tes descendants veillent sur leur conduite en marchant devant moi, tout comme tu as marché devant moi.’
  
  26 Maintenant, qu'elle s'accomplisse donc, Dieu d'Israël, la promesse que tu as faite à ton serviteur David, mon père !
  
  27 » Mais quoi ! Dieu pourrait-il vraiment habiter sur la terre ? Puisque ni le ciel ni les cieux des cieux ne peuvent te contenir, cette maison que j'ai construite le pourrait d’autant moins !
  
  28 Toutefois, Eternel, mon Dieu, sois attentif à la prière de ton serviteur, à sa supplication. Ecoute le cri et la prière que je t'adresse aujourd'hui, moi ton serviteur.
  
  29 Que tes yeux soient nuit et jour ouverts sur cette maison, sur cet endroit, puisque tu as dit : ‘C’est là que résidera mon nom !’Ecoute la prière que ton serviteur fait à cet endroit.
  
  30 Veuille écouter la supplication de ton serviteur et de ton peuple, Israël, lorsqu'ils prieront à cet endroit ! Ecoute-les de l'endroit où tu résides, du haut du ciel, écoute-les et pardonne-leur !
  
  31 » Peut-être quelqu'un péchera-t-il contre son prochain et lui imposera-t-on de prêter serment avec une malédiction. S'il vient jurer devant ton autel, dans cette maison,
  
  32 écoute-le du haut du ciel ! Agis et juge tes serviteurs : condamne le coupable en faisant retomber sa conduite sur sa tête, mais rends justice à l'innocent en le traitant conformément à son innocence !
  
  33 » Admettons qu’Israël, ton peuple, connaisse la défaite devant l'ennemi pour avoir péché contre toi. S'ils reviennent alors à toi et célèbrent ton nom, s'ils t'adressent des prières et des supplications dans cette maison,
  
  34 écoute-les du haut du ciel, pardonne le péché de ton peuple, d'Israël, et ramène-les sur le territoire que tu as donné à leurs ancêtres !
  
  35 » Admettons que le ciel soit fermé et qu'il n'y ait plus de pluie à cause de leurs péchés contre toi. S'ils prient alors dans cet endroit et célèbrent ton nom, et s'ils se détournent de leurs péchés, parce que tu les auras humiliés,
  
  36 écoute-les du haut du ciel, pardonne le péché de tes serviteurs et de ton peuple, d'Israël. Oui, enseigne-leur alors la bonne voie, celle dans laquelle ils doivent marcher, et fais venir la pluie sur la terre que tu as donnée en héritage à ton peuple !
  
  37 » Admettons que la famine, la peste, la rouille, la nielle ou les sauterelles d'une espèce ou d'une autre soient dans le pays, que l'ennemi assiège ton peuple dans son pays, dans ses villes, qu’il y ait des fléaux ou des maladies quelconques.
  
  38 Si qui que ce soit, si tout ton peuple, Israël, fait alors entendre des prières et des supplications parce qu’il reconnaît la blessure de son cœur, et s’il tend les mains vers cette maison,
  
  39 écoute-le du haut du ciel, de l’endroit où tu résides, et pardonne-lui. Agis et donne à chacun ce que mérite sa conduite, puisque tu connais le cœur de chacun. Oui, toi seul connais le cœur de tous les hommes.
  
  40 Agis de cette manière et ils te craindront tout le temps qu'ils vivront sur le territoire que tu as donné à nos ancêtres.
  
  41 » Même l'étranger, celui qui n'est pas issu de ton peuple, d'Israël, viendra d'un pays lointain à cause de ta réputation.
  
  42 En effet, on apprendra que ton nom est grand, ta main forte, et ton bras puissant. Quand l’étranger viendra prier dans cette maison,
  
  43 écoute-le du haut du ciel, de l’endroit où tu résides, et accorde-lui tout ce qu'il te demandera ! Ainsi, tous les peuples de la terre connaîtront ton nom et te craindront comme le fait Israël, ton peuple, et ils sauront que ton nom est associé à cette maison que j'ai construite.
  
  44 » Admettons que ton peuple sorte pour combattre son ennemi en suivant tes directives. S'ils adressent alors des prières à l'Eternel, les regards tournés vers la ville que tu as choisie et vers la maison que j'ai construite en l’honneur de ton nom,
  
  45 écoute du haut du ciel leurs prières et leurs supplications, et fais-leur droit !
  
  46 » Admettons qu’ils pèchent contre toi – puisqu’il n'y a aucun homme qui ne commette pas de péché – et que tu sois irrité contre eux au point de les livrer à l'ennemi qui les déportera dans un pays ennemi, lointain ou proche.
  
  47 S'ils se mettent alors à réfléchir dans le pays où ils seront exilés, s'ils reviennent à toi et t'adressent des supplications dans le pays de ceux qui les auront déportés, en disant : ‘Nous avons péché, nous avons commis l’injustice, nous avons fait le mal’,
  
  48 oui, s'ils reviennent à toi de tout leur cœur et de toute leur âme, dans le pays de leurs ennemis, de ceux qui les auront déportés, s'ils t'adressent des prières, les regards tournés vers leur pays, celui que tu as donné à leurs ancêtres, vers la ville que tu as choisie et vers la maison que j'ai construite en l’honneur de ton nom,
  
  49 écoute du haut du ciel, de l’endroit où tu résides, leurs prières et leurs supplications, et fais-leur droit.
  
  50 Pardonne à ton peuple ses péchés et tous ses actes de révolte contre toi ! Excite la compassion de ceux qui les retiennent prisonniers, afin qu'ils aient pitié d'eux,
  
  51 car ils sont ton peuple et ton héritage, ceux que tu as fait sortir d'Egypte, du milieu d'une fournaise à fondre le fer !
  
  52 » Que tes yeux soient ouverts sur la supplication de ton serviteur et de ton peuple, d'Israël, pour les exaucer chaque fois qu’ils feront appel à toi !
  
  53 En effet, c’est toi qui les as séparés de tous les autres peuples de la terre pour faire d’eux ton héritage, comme tu l'as déclaré par l’intermédiaire de ton serviteur Moïse quand tu as fait sortir d'Egypte nos ancêtres, Seigneur Eternel ! »
  
  54 Lorsque Salomon eut fini d'adresser à l'Eternel toute cette prière et cette supplication, il se leva devant l'autel de l'Eternel, où il était agenouillé, les mains tendues vers le ciel.
  
  55 Debout, il bénit à haute voix toute l'assemblée d'Israël en disant :
  
  56 « Béni soit l'Eternel, qui a donné du repos à son peuple, Israël, conformément à toutes ses promesses ! De toutes les bonnes paroles qu'il avait prononcées par l’intermédiaire de son serviteur Moïse, aucune n'est restée sans effet.
  
  57 Que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, soit avec nous, comme il l’a été avec nos ancêtres ! Qu'il ne nous abandonne pas et ne nous délaisse pas,
  
  58 mais qu'il incline nos cœurs vers lui, afin que nous marchions dans toutes ses voies et que nous respections ses commandements, ses prescriptions et ses règles, qu'il a donnés à nos ancêtres !
  
  59 Que les paroles de supplication que je viens d’adresser à l'Eternel soient jour et nuit présentes devant l'Eternel, notre Dieu, et qu'il fasse en tout temps droit à son serviteur et à son peuple, Israël.
  
  60 Ainsi, tous les peuples de la terre reconnaîtront que c’est l'Eternel qui est Dieu et qu'il n'y en a pas d'autre.
  
  61 Que votre cœur soit attaché sans réserve à l'Eternel, notre Dieu, comme il l'est aujourd'hui, pour suivre ses prescriptions et pour respecter ses commandements ! »
  
  62 Le roi et tout Israël avec lui offrirent des sacrifices devant l'Eternel.
  
  63 Salomon tua 22'000 bœufs et 120'000 brebis pour le sacrifice de communion qu'il offrit à l'Eternel. C’est ainsi que le roi et tous les Israélites firent la dédicace de la maison de l'Eternel.
  
  64 Ce jour-là, le roi consacra le milieu du parvis qui se trouvait devant la maison de l'Eternel ; en effet, c’est là qu’il offrit les holocaustes, les offrandes et les graisses des sacrifices de communion, parce que l'autel en bronze qui se trouvait devant l'Eternel était trop petit pour les contenir.
  
  65 Salomon célébra la fête des tentes à ce moment-là, et tout Israël avec lui. Une grande foule, venue des environs de Hamath jusqu'au torrent d'Egypte, se rassembla devant l'Eternel, notre Dieu, pendant 7 jours, puis 7 autres jours, soit 14 jours.
  
  66 Le lendemain, il renvoya le peuple. Ils bénirent le roi et retournèrent chez eux, remplis de joie et le cœur content pour tout le bien que l'Eternel avait fait à son serviteur David et à Israël, son peuple.
  
  1 Rois 9
  
  1 Lorsque Salomon eut fini de construire la maison de l'Eternel, le palais royal et tout ce qu'il avait désiré faire,
  
  2 l'Eternel lui apparut une deuxième fois, comme il lui était apparu à Gabaon.
  
  3 L'Eternel lui dit : « J'exauce la prière et la supplication que tu m'as adressées, je consacre cette maison que tu as construite pour y établir éternellement mon nom, et j'y aurai toujours mes yeux et mon cœur.
  
  4 Quant à toi, si tu marches devant moi comme l’a fait ton père David, avec un cœur intègre et avec droiture, en accomplissant tout ce que je t'ai commandé, si tu respectes mes prescriptions et mes règles,
  
  5 j'affermirai pour toujours ton autorité royale en Israël, comme je l'ai déclaré à ton père David lorsque j’ai dit : ‘*Tu ne manqueras jamais d'un successeur sur le trône d'Israël.’
  
  6 » Si en revanche vous vous détournez de moi, vous et vos descendants, si vous ne respectez pas les commandements et les prescriptions que je vous ai donnés, mais que vous allez servir d'autres dieux et vous prosterner devant eux,
  
  7 j’éliminerai Israël du territoire que je lui ai donné, je rejetterai loin de moi la maison que j'ai consacrée en l’honneur de mon nom, et Israël sera un sujet de proverbe et de raillerie parmi tous les peuples.
  
  8 Si important qu'ait été ce temple, toute personne qui passera près de lui sera dans l'étonnement et sifflera. On dira : ‘Pourquoi l'Eternel a-t-il traité de cette manière ce pays et ce temple ?’
  
  9 Et l'on répondra : ‘C’est parce qu'ils ont abandonné l'Eternel, leur Dieu, qui avait fait sortir leurs ancêtres d'Egypte, parce qu'ils se sont attachés à d'autres dieux, se sont prosternés devant eux et les ont servis. Voilà pourquoi l'Eternel a fait venir tous ces malheurs sur eux.’ »
  
  10 Au bout de 20 ans, Salomon avait construit les deux maisons : la maison de l'Eternel et le palais royal.
  
  11 Alors, comme Hiram, le roi de Tyr, lui avait fourni autant de bois de cèdre et de cyprès, ainsi que d'or, qu'il l’avait voulu, le roi Salomon lui donna 20 villes situées en Galilée.
  
  12 Hiram sortit de Tyr pour voir les villes que lui donnait Salomon, mais elles ne lui plurent pas.
  
  13 Il dit : « Quelles villes m'as-tu données là, mon frère ? » et il les appela pays de Cabul, nom qu'elles ont conservé jusqu'à aujourd’hui.
  
  14 Hiram avait envoyé au roi plus de 3 tonnes et demie d'or.
  
  15 Voici ce qui concerne les hommes de corvée que le roi Salomon enrôla pour construire la maison de l'Eternel et sa propre maison, ainsi que Millo, la muraille de Jérusalem, Hatsor, Meguiddo et Guézer.
  
  16 Le pharaon, le roi d'Egypte, était venu s'emparer de la ville de Guézer, l'avait incendiée et avait tué les Cananéens qui y habitaient. Puis il l'avait donnée pour dot à sa fille, la femme de Salomon.
  
  17 Salomon reconstruisit alors Guézer, Beth-Horon-la-basse,
  
  18 Baalath et Thadmor, dans la région désertique du pays.
  
  19 Il construisit aussi toutes les villes qui lui servaient d'entrepôts, les villes destinées à accueillir les chars, celles réservées à la cavalerie, ainsi que tout ce qu'il lui plut de construire à Jérusalem, au Liban et sur tout le territoire dont il était le souverain.
  
  20 Il y avait toute une population, issue des Amoréens, des Hittites, des Phéréziens, des Héviens et des Jébusiens, qui avait survécu et qui ne faisait pas partie des Israélites.
  
  21 Leurs descendants étaient restés après eux dans le pays, parce que les Israélites n'avaient pu les vouer à la destruction. Salomon les enrôla comme esclaves pour la corvée, statut qui leur est resté jusqu'à aujourd’hui.
  
  22 En revanche, Salomon n'employa pas les Israélites comme esclaves : ils étaient des hommes de guerre, ses serviteurs, ses chefs, ses écuyers, les commandants de ses chars et de sa cavalerie.
  
  23 Les chefs des officiers désignés comme responsables des travaux pour Salomon étaient au nombre de 550 ; ils avaient autorité sur les ouvriers.
  
  24 La fille du pharaon monta de la ville de David jusque dans sa propre maison, celle que Salomon lui avait construite. Ce fut alors qu'il construisit Millo.
  
  25 Salomon offrit trois fois par année des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion sur l'autel qu'il avait construit en l’honneur de l'Eternel, et il brûla des parfums sur celui qui se trouvait devant l'Eternel. C’est ainsi que le temple fut terminé.
  
  26 Le roi Salomon construisit des bateaux à Etsjon-Guéber, près d'Elath, sur les bords de la mer des Roseaux, dans le pays d'Edom.
  
  27 Hiram envoya sur ces bateaux, aux côtés des serviteurs de Salomon, ses propres serviteurs, des marins expérimentés.
  
  28 Ils allèrent à Ophir et ils en rapportèrent près de 13 tonnes d’or qu'ils remirent au roi Salomon.
  
  1 Rois 10
  
  1 La reine de Séba apprit quelle était la réputation de Salomon, à la gloire de l'Eternel, et elle vint pour le mettre à l'épreuve par des énigmes.
  
  2 Elle arriva à Jérusalem avec une suite très nombreuse, avec des chameaux chargés d’aromates, d'or en très grande quantité et de pierres précieuses. Elle se rendit auprès de Salomon et lui exposa toutes ses réflexions.
  
  3 Salomon répondit à toutes ses questions ; il n'y eut aucun mystère pour le roi : il lui expliqua tout.
  
  4 La reine de Séba vit toute la sagesse de Salomon, le palais qu'il avait construit,
  
  5 les plats servis à sa table, le lieu d’habitation de ses serviteurs, les fonctions et les tenues de ceux qui le servaient, ses responsables des boissons ainsi que les holocaustes qu'il offrait dans la maison de l'Eternel. Elle en eut le souffle coupé
  
  6 et dit au roi : « C'était donc vrai, ce que j'ai appris dans mon pays au sujet de ta situation et de ta sagesse !
  
  7 Je ne le croyais pas avant de venir et de le voir de mes yeux. Et l’on ne m'en avait même pas raconté la moitié ! Tu as plus de sagesse et de prospérité que je ne l’avais appris par la rumeur.
  
  8 Heureux tes hommes, heureux tes serviteurs, puisqu’ils sont constamment devant toi et peuvent bénéficier de ta sagesse !
  
  9 Béni soit l'Eternel, ton Dieu, qui t'a choisi pour te placer sur le trône d'Israël ! C'est parce que l'Eternel aime éternellement Israël qu'il t'a établi roi pour que tu exerces le droit et la justice. »
  
  10 Elle donna au roi plus de 3 tonnes et demie d'or, une très grande quantité d'aromates et des pierres précieuses. Il ne vint plus autant d'aromates que la reine de Séba en donna au roi Salomon.
  
  11 Les bateaux de Hiram qui rapportèrent de l'or d'Ophir ramenèrent aussi une grande quantité de bois de santal et des pierres précieuses.
  
  12 Avec ce bois de santal, le roi fit des balustrades pour la maison de l'Eternel et pour le palais royal, ainsi que des harpes et des luths pour les musiciens. Il ne vint plus de ce bois de santal et l’on n'en a plus vu jusqu'à aujourd’hui.
  
  13 Le roi Salomon donna à la reine de Séba tout ce qu'elle désira, ce qu'elle demanda. Il lui fit en outre des cadeaux dignes d'un roi tel que lui. Puis elle repartit et rentra dans son pays avec ses serviteurs.
  
  14 Le poids de l'or qui arrivait chez Salomon chaque année était de près de 20 tonnes,
  
  15 en plus de ce qu'il retirait des négociants et du trafic commercial, ainsi que de tous les rois d'Arabie et des gouverneurs du pays.
  
  16 Le roi Salomon fit 200 grands boucliers en or battu, pour chacun desquels il employa 7 kilos d'or,
  
  17 et 300 autres boucliers en or battu, pour chacun desquels il employa près de 2 kilos d'or. Il les plaça dans la maison de la forêt du Liban.
  
  18 Le roi fit aussi un grand trône en ivoire et il le couvrit d'or pur.
  
  19 Ce trône avait 6 marches et son dossier était arrondi par-derrière. Il y avait des bras de chaque côté du siège ; deux lions se trouvaient près des bras,
  
  20 et 12 lions sur les six marches, de chaque côté. On n’a rien fait de pareil pour aucun royaume.
  
  21 Toutes les coupes du roi Salomon étaient en or, et toute la vaisselle de la maison de la forêt du Liban était en or pur. Rien n'était en argent : on n'en faisait aucun cas à l’époque de Salomon.
  
  22 En effet, le roi avait des bateaux long-courriers en mer avec ceux de Hiram. Tous les 3 ans les bateaux long-courriers arrivaient, chargés d'or, d'argent, d'ivoire, de singes et de paons.
  
  23 Le roi Salomon dépassa tous les rois de la terre par ses richesses et sa sagesse.
  
  24 Tout le monde cherchait à le voir pour bénéficier de la sagesse que Dieu lui avait donnée,
  
  25 et chacun apportait son cadeau : des objets en argent et en or, des habits, des armes, des aromates, des chevaux et des mulets. Cela se passait de cette manière chaque année.
  
  26 Salomon réunit des chars et de la cavalerie. Il avait 1400 chars et 12'000 cavaliers, qu'il plaça dans les villes où il gardait ses chars et à Jérusalem, près de lui.
  
  27 Le roi rendit l'argent aussi commun à Jérusalem que les pierres, et les cèdres aussi nombreux que les sycomores qui poussent dans la plaine.
  
  28 C'était en Egypte que Salomon achetait ses chevaux. Une caravane de marchands du roi allait les chercher par groupes à un prix fixe :
  
  29 il fallait 600 pièces d’argent pour faire venir un char d'Egypte, et 150 pièces pour un cheval. Ils en ramenaient de même pour tous les rois des Hittites et pour les rois de Syrie.
  
  1 Rois 11
  
  1 Le roi Salomon aima beaucoup de femmes étrangères, en plus de la fille du pharaon : des Moabites, des Ammonites, des Edomites, des Sidoniennes, des Hittites.
  
  2 Elles appartenaient aux nations à propos desquelles l'Eternel avait dit aux Israélites : « Vous n'irez pas chez elles et elles ne viendront pas chez vous. Elles entraîneraient certainement votre cœur à suivre leurs dieux. » Ce fut à ces nations que Salomon s'attacha, par amour pour ces femmes.
  
  3 Il eut 700 princesses pour femmes ainsi que 300 concubines, et ses femmes détournèrent son cœur.
  
  4 A l'époque de la vieillesse de Salomon, ses femmes entraînèrent son cœur à suivre d'autres dieux et il ne s’attacha pas sans réserve à l'Eternel, son Dieu, comme l'avait fait son père David.
  
  5 Il suivit Astarté, la divinité des Sidoniens, et Milcom, l'abominable dieu des Ammonites.
  
  6 Salomon fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel et il ne le suivit pas pleinement, contrairement à son père David.
  
  7 Ce fut alors qu’il construisit, sur la montagne qui se trouve en face de Jérusalem, un haut lieu pour Kemosh, l'abominable dieu de Moab, et pour Moloc, l'abominable dieu des Ammonites.
  
  8 Il agit de cette manière à l’intention de toutes ses femmes étrangères pour qu’elles puissent offrir des parfums et des sacrifices à leurs dieux.
  
  9 L'Eternel fut irrité contre Salomon, parce qu'il avait détourné son cœur de lui, le Dieu d'Israël, qui lui était apparu deux fois.
  
  10 Il lui avait pourtant expressément défendu de suivre d'autres dieux, mais Salomon ne respecta pas ce commandement de l'Eternel.
  
  11 L'Eternel dit alors à Salomon : « Puisque tu as agi de cette manière et que tu n'as pas respecté mon alliance ni les prescriptions que je t'avais données, je vais t’arracher la royauté et la donner à ton serviteur.
  
  12 Toutefois, je ne le ferai pas pendant ta vie à cause de ton père David. C'est de la main de ton fils que je l'arracherai.
  
  13 Je n'arracherai cependant pas tout le royaume à ton fils : je lui laisserai une tribu à cause de mon serviteur David et de Jérusalem, la ville que j’ai choisie. »
  
  14 L'Eternel fit surgir un adversaire pour Salomon : Hadad, l'Edomite, membre de la famille royale d'Edom.
  
  15 Lorsque David avait combattu contre Edom, Joab, le chef de l'armée, était monté pour enterrer les Israélites morts et il avait tué tous les Edomites de sexe masculin.
  
  16 Il était resté 6 mois en Edom avec tout Israël, jusqu'à ce qu'il en ait éliminé tous les hommes.
  
  17 Hadad avait alors pris la fuite avec des serviteurs édomites de son père et s’était rendu en Egypte. Il était encore un tout jeune garçon.
  
  18 Partis de Madian, ils étaient allés à Paran, avaient pris avec eux des hommes de Paran et étaient arrivés en Egypte, chez le pharaon, le roi d'Egypte. Celui-ci avait donné une maison à Hadad, avait pourvu à son entretien et lui avait accordé des terres.
  
  19 Hadad avait trouvé grâce aux yeux du pharaon, à tel point que celui-ci lui avait donné pour épouse la sœur de sa femme, la reine Thachpenès.
  
  20 La sœur de Thachpenès avait donné un fils à Hadad : Guenubath, et Thachpenès l’avait élevé dans la maison du pharaon. Ainsi, Guenubath avait vécu dans la maison du pharaon, au milieu de ses enfants.
  
  21 Lorsque Hadad apprit en Egypte que David était couché avec ses ancêtres et que Joab, le chef de l'armée, était mort, il demanda au pharaon : « Laisse-moi partir dans mon pays. »
  
  22 Le pharaon lui dit : « Que te manque-t-il auprès de moi, pour que tu cherches à rentrer dans ton pays ? » Il répondit : « Rien, mais laisse-moi partir. »
  
  23 Dieu fit surgir un autre adversaire pour Salomon : Rezon, le fils d'Eliada, qui s'était enfui de chez son maître Hadadézer, le roi de Tsoba.
  
  24 Il avait rassemblé des hommes auprès de lui et il était chef d’une bande, lorsque David avait massacré les troupes de son maître. Ils étaient allés à Damas et s'y étaient installés, et ils en devinrent les rois.
  
  25 Il fut un adversaire d'Israël pendant toute la vie de Salomon, en même temps qu'Hadad lui faisait du mal, et il détestait Israël. Il régna sur la Syrie.
  
  26 Jéroboam aussi, un serviteur de Salomon, se révolta contre le roi. Il était le fils de Nebath, un Ephratien de Tseréda, et sa mère était une veuve du nom de Tserua.
  
  27 Voici à quelle occasion il se révolta contre le roi. Salomon était en train de construire Millo et de réparer la brèche faite dans la ville de David, son père.
  
  28 Jéroboam était fort et vaillant. Ayant vu ce jeune homme à l'œuvre, Salomon lui donna la surveillance de tous les travaux de la famille de Joseph.
  
  29 A la même époque, Jéroboam sortit de Jérusalem et rencontra en chemin le prophète Achija de Silo, habillé d'un manteau neuf. Ils se trouvaient tous les deux seuls dans les champs.
  
  30 Achija attrapa le manteau neuf qu'il portait, le déchira en 12 morceaux
  
  31 et dit à Jéroboam : « Prends 10 morceaux pour toi ! En effet, voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël : ‘Je vais arracher le royaume de la main de Salomon et je te donnerai 10 tribus.
  
  32 Mais il gardera une tribu, à cause de mon serviteur David et de Jérusalem, la ville que j'ai choisie de préférence à toutes les tribus d'Israël.
  
  33 Cela arrivera parce qu'ils m'ont abandonné et se sont prosternés devant Astarté, la divinité des Sidoniens, devant Kemosh, le dieu de Moab, et devant Milcom, le dieu des Ammonites, et parce qu'ils n'ont pas marché dans mes voies pour faire ce qui est droit à mes yeux et pour mettre en pratique mes prescriptions et mes règles comme l'a fait David, le père de Salomon.
  
  34 Je ne lui retirerai pas tout le royaume. En effet, je le garderai comme prince tout le temps qu’il vivra, à cause de mon serviteur David, que j'ai choisi et qui a respecté mes commandements et mes prescriptions.
  
  35 En revanche, je retirerai le royaume à son fils et je t'en donnerai 10 tribus.
  
  36 Je laisserai une tribu à son fils afin que mon serviteur David ait toujours un successeur devant moi à Jérusalem, la ville que j'ai choisie pour y établir mon nom.
  
  37 Je vais te prendre pour que tu règnes sur tout le territoire que tu voudras et tu seras roi d'Israël.
  
  38 Si tu obéis à tout ce que je t'ordonnerai, si tu marches dans mes voies et si tu fais ce qui est droit à mes yeux, en respectant mes prescriptions et mes commandements comme l'a fait mon serviteur David, je serai avec toi, je te construirai une maison stable, comme j'en ai construit une à David, et je te donnerai Israël.
  
  39 J'humilierai ainsi la descendance de David, mais ce ne sera pas définitif.’ »
  
  40 Salomon chercha à faire mourir Jéroboam, mais il se leva et se réfugia en Egypte vers Shishak, le roi d'Egypte. Il resta en Egypte jusqu'à la mort de Salomon.
  
  41 Le reste des actes de Salomon, tout ce qu'il a accompli et sa sagesse, cela est décrit dans les annales de Salomon.
  
  42 Salomon régna 40 ans à Jérusalem sur l’ensemble d’Israël.
  
  43 Puis il se coucha avec ses ancêtres et il fut enterré dans la ville de son père David. Son fils Roboam devint roi à sa place.
