    • Ruth 1

      1 It happened in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
      2 The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
      3 Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons.
      4 They took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they lived there about ten years.
      5 Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.
      6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Yahweh had visited his people in giving them bread.
      7 She went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.
      8 Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go, return each of you to her mother's house: Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me.
      9 Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband." Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
      10 They said to her, "No, but we will return with you to your people."
      11 Naomi said, "Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
      12 Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, 'I have hope,' if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons;
      13 would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me much for your sakes, for the hand of Yahweh has gone out against me."
      14 They lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth joined with her.
      15 She said, "Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people, and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law."
      16 Ruth said, "Don't entreat me to leave you, and to return from following after you, for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God;
      17 where you die, will I die, and there will I be buried. Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death part you and me."
      18 When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her.
      19 So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. It happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they asked, "Is this Naomi?"
      20 She said to them, "Don't call me Naomi. Call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
      21 I went out full, and Yahweh has brought me home again empty; why do you call me Naomi, since Yahweh has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?"
      22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

      Ruth 2

      1 Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech, and his name was Boaz.
      2 Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, "Let me now go to the field, and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor." She said to her, "Go, my daughter."
      3 She went, and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and she happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.
      4 Behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, "Yahweh be with you." They answered him, "Yahweh bless you."
      5 Then Boaz said to his servant who was set over the reapers, "Whose young lady is this?"
      6 The servant who was set over the reapers answered, "It is the Moabite lady who came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab.
      7 She said, 'Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.' So she came, and has continued even from the morning until now, except that she stayed a little in the house."
      8 Then Boaz said to Ruth, "Listen, my daughter. Don't go to glean in another field, and don't go from here, but stay here close to my maidens.
      9 Let your eyes be on the field that they reap, and go after them. Haven't I commanded the young men not to touch you? When you are thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink from that which the young men have drawn."
      10 Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said to him, "Why have I found favor in your sight, that you should take knowledge of me, since I am a foreigner?"
      11 Boaz answered her, "It has fully been shown me, all that you have done to your mother-in-law since the death of your husband; and how you have left your father and your mother, and the land of your birth, and have come to a people that you didn't know before.
      12 May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge."
      13 Then she said, "Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, because you have comforted me, and because you have spoken kindly to your handmaid, though I am not as one of your handmaidens."
      14 At meal time Boaz said to her, "Come here, and eat of the bread, and dip your morsel in the vinegar." She sat beside the reapers, and they reached her parched grain, and she ate, and was satisfied, and left some of it.
      15 When she had risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, "Let her glean even among the sheaves, and don't reproach her.
      16 Also pull out some for her from the bundles, and leave it, and let her glean, and don't rebuke her."
      17 So she gleaned in the field until evening; and she beat out that which she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley.
      18 She took it up, and went into the city; and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought out and gave to her that which she had left after she was sufficed.
      19 Her mother-in-law said to her, "Where have you gleaned today? Where have you worked? Blessed be he who noticed you." She showed her mother-in-law with whom she had worked, and said, "The man's name with whom I worked today is Boaz."
      20 Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, "Blessed be he of Yahweh, who has not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead." Naomi said to her, "The man is a close relative to us, one of our near kinsmen."
      21 Ruth the Moabitess said, "Yes, he said to me, 'You shall stay close to my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.'"
      22 Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, "It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his maidens, and that they not meet you in any other field."
      23 So she stayed close to the maidens of Boaz, to glean to the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and she lived with her mother-in-law.

      Ruth 3

      1 Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?
      2 Now isn't Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens you were? Behold, he winnows barley tonight in the threshing floor.
      3 Therefore wash yourself, anoint yourself, get dressed, and go down to the threshing floor, but don't make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.
      4 It shall be, when he lies down, that you shall mark the place where he shall lie, and you shall go in, and uncover his feet, and lay down; then he will tell you what you shall do."
      5 She said to her, "All that you say I will do."
      6 She went down to the threshing floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law told her.
      7 When Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. She came softly, uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
      8 It happened at midnight, that the man was startled and turned himself; and behold, a woman lay at his feet.
      9 He said, "Who are you?" She answered, "I am Ruth your handmaid. Therefore spread your skirt over your handmaid; for you are a near kinsman."
      10 He said, "Blessed are you by Yahweh, my daughter. You have shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as you didn't follow young men, whether poor or rich.
      11 Now, my daughter, don't be afraid; I will do to you all that you say; for all the city of my people does know that you are a worthy woman.
      12 Now it is true that I am a near kinsman; however there is a kinsman nearer than I.
      13 Stay this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform for you the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part. But if he will not do the part of a kinsman for you, then will I do the part of a kinsman for you, as Yahweh lives. Lie down until the morning."
      14 She lay at his feet until the morning. She rose up before one could discern another. For he said, "Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor."
      15 He said, "Bring the mantle that is on you, and hold it." She held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her; and he went into the city.
      16 When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, "How did it go, my daughter?" She told her all that the man had done to her.
      17 She said, "He gave me these six measures of barley; for he said, 'Don't go empty to your mother-in-law.'"
      18 Then she said, "Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will fall; for the man will not rest, until he has finished the thing this day."

      Ruth 4

      1 Now Boaz went up to the gate, and sat down there. Behold, the near kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by; to whom he said, "Come over here, friend, and sit down!" He turned aside, and sat down.
      2 He took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, "Sit down here." They sat down.
      3 He said to the near kinsman, "Naomi, who has come back out of the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's.
      4 I thought to disclose it to you, saying, 'Buy it before those who sit here, and before the elders of my people.' If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know. For there is no one to redeem it besides you; and I am after you." He said, "I will redeem it."
      5 Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must buy it also from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance."
      6 The near kinsman said, "I can't redeem it for myself, lest I mar my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption for yourself; for I can't redeem it."
      7 Now this was the custom in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things: a man took off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor; and this was the way of attestation in Israel.
      8 So the near kinsman said to Boaz, "Buy it for yourself." He took off his shoe.
      9 Boaz said to the elders, and to all the people, "You are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, from the hand of Naomi.
      10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, I have purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance, that the name of the dead not be cut off from among his brothers, and from the gate of his place. You are witnesses this day."
      11 All the people who were in the gate, and the elders, said, "We are witnesses. May Yahweh make the woman who has come into your house like Rachel and like Leah, which two built the house of Israel; and treat you worthily in Ephrathah, and be famous in Bethlehem.
      12 Let your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, of the seed which Yahweh shall give you of this young woman."
      13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife; and he went in to her, and Yahweh gave her conception, and she bore a son.
      14 The women said to Naomi, "Blessed be Yahweh, who has not left you this day without a near kinsman; and let his name be famous in Israel.
      15 He shall be to you a restorer of life, and sustain you in your old age, for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him."
      16 Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse to it.
      17 The women, her neighbors, gave him a name, saying, "There is a son born to Naomi"; and they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
      18 Now this is the history of the generations of Perez: Perez became the father of Hezron,
      19 and Hezron became the father of Ram, and Ram became the father of Amminadab,
      20 and Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon became the father of Salmon,
      21 and Salmon became the father of Boaz, and Boaz became the father of Obed,
      22 and Obed became the father of Jesse, and Jesse became the father of David.

    • Ruth 1

      1 A l’époque des juges, il y eut une famine dans le pays. Un homme de Bethléhem de Juda partit avec sa femme et ses deux fils s’installer dans le pays de Moab.
      2 Le nom de cet homme était Elimélec, celui de sa femme Naomi, et ses deux fils s'appelaient Machlon et Kiljon ; ils étaient éphratiens, de Bethléhem en Juda. Arrivés au pays de Moab, ils s'y établirent.
      3 Elimélec, le mari de Naomi, mourut et elle resta avec ses deux fils.
      4 Ils prirent des femmes moabites – l'une s’appelait Orpa et l'autre Ruth – et ils habitèrent là environ 10 ans.
      5 Machlon et Kiljon moururent aussi tous les deux et Naomi resta privée de ses deux fils et de son mari.
      6 Alors elle se leva, elle et ses belles-filles, afin de quitter le pays de Moab. En effet, elle y avait appris que l'Eternel était intervenu en faveur de son peuple et lui avait donné du pain.
      7 Elle partit de l'endroit où elle habitait, accompagnée de ses deux belles-filles, et elle se mit en route pour retourner dans le pays de Juda.
      8 Naomi dit à ses deux belles-filles : « Allez-y, retournez chacune dans la famille de votre mère ! Que l'Eternel agisse avec bonté envers vous, comme vous l'avez fait envers ceux qui sont morts et envers moi !
      9 Que l'Eternel fasse trouver à chacune du repos dans la maison d'un mari ! » Puis elle les embrassa. Elles se mirent à pleurer tout haut
      10 et lui dirent : « Non, nous irons avec toi vers ton peuple. »
      11 Naomi dit : « Retournez chez vous, mes filles ! Pourquoi viendriez-vous avec moi ? Suis-je encore en état d'avoir des fils qui puissent devenir vos maris ?
      12 Retournez chez vous, mes filles, allez-y ! Je suis trop vieille pour me remarier. Et même si je disais : ‘J'ai de l'espérance’, même si cette nuit j'étais avec un homme et que je mette au monde des fils,
      13 attendriez-vous pour cela qu'ils aient grandi, refuseriez-vous pour cela de vous marier ? Non, mes filles, car à cause de vous je suis dans une grande amertume parce que l'Eternel est intervenu contre moi. »
      14 Elles se remirent à pleurer tout haut. Orpa embrassa sa belle-mère, mais Ruth lui resta attachée.
      15 Naomi dit à Ruth : « Tu vois, ta belle-sœur est retournée vers son peuple et vers ses dieux ; retourne chez toi comme elle ! »
      16 Ruth répondit : « Ne me pousse pas à te laisser, à repartir loin de toi ! Où tu iras j'irai, où tu habiteras j'habiterai ; ton peuple sera mon peuple et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu ;
      17 où tu mourras je mourrai et j'y serai enterrée. Que l'Eternel me traite avec la plus grande sévérité si autre chose que la mort me sépare de toi ! »
      18 La voyant décidée à l’accompagner, Naomi cessa d'insister auprès d'elle.
      19 Elles firent ensemble le voyage jusqu'à leur arrivée à Bethléhem. Lorsqu'elles entrèrent dans Bethléhem, toute la ville fut dans l’agitation à cause d'elles. Les femmes disaient : « Est-ce bien Naomi ? »
      20 Elle leur dit : « Ne m'appelez pas Naomi, appelez-moi Mara, car le Tout-Puissant m'a remplie d'amertume.
      21 J'étais dans l'abondance à mon départ et l'Eternel me ramène les mains vides. Pourquoi m'appelleriez-vous Naomi, après que l'Eternel s'est prononcé contre moi, après que le Tout-Puissant a provoqué mon malheur ? »
      22 C’est ainsi que Naomi et sa belle-fille, Ruth la Moabite, revinrent du pays de Moab. Elles arrivèrent à Bethléhem au début de la moisson de l’orge.

      Ruth 2

      1 Naomi avait un parent de son mari. C'était un homme puissant et riche du clan d'Elimélec qui s’appelait Boaz.
      2 Ruth la Moabite dit à Naomi : « Laisse-moi aller ramasser des épis abandonnés dans un champ, derrière celui aux yeux duquel je trouverai grâce. » Elle lui répondit : « Vas-y, ma fille. »
      3 Ruth alla ramasser des épis dans un champ, derrière les moissonneurs. Il se trouva que la parcelle de terre appartenait à Boaz, du clan d'Elimélec.
      4 Or, Boaz vint de Bethléhem. Il dit aux moissonneurs : « Que l'Eternel soit avec vous ! » Ils lui répondirent : « Que l'Eternel te bénisse ! »
      5 Boaz dit à son serviteur chargé de surveiller les moissonneurs : « A qui est cette jeune femme ? »
      6 Le serviteur chargé de surveiller les moissonneurs répondit : « C'est une jeune femme moabite qui est revenue avec Naomi du pays de Moab.
      7 Elle a dit : ‘Permettez-moi donc de glaner, de ramasser des épis entre les gerbes derrière les moissonneurs’et, depuis son arrivée ce matin jusqu'à présent, elle est restée debout et ne s'est reposée qu'un moment dans la maison. »
      8 Boaz dit à Ruth : « Ecoute, ma fille, ne va pas ramasser des épis dans un autre champ ; ne t'éloigne pas d'ici, reste avec mes servantes.
      9 Regarde où l'on moissonne dans le champ et va après elles. J'ai défendu à mes serviteurs de te toucher. Quand tu auras soif, tu iras aux vases et tu boiras de ce que les serviteurs auront puisé. »
      10 Alors elle tomba le visage contre terre, se prosterna et lui dit : « Comment ai-je trouvé grâce à tes yeux pour que tu t'intéresses à moi, une étrangère ? »
      11 Boaz lui répondit : « On m'a rapporté tout ce que tu as fait pour ta belle-mère depuis la mort de ton mari et comment tu as quitté ton père et ta mère et le pays de ta naissance pour aller vers un peuple que tu ne connaissais pas auparavant.
      12 Que l'Eternel te rende ce que tu as fait et que ta récompense soit entière de la part de l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, sous les ailes duquel tu es venue te réfugier ! »
      13 Elle dit : « Oh ! Que je trouve grâce à tes yeux, mon seigneur, car tu m'as consolée et tu as parlé au cœur de ta servante. Pourtant je ne suis pas, moi, comme l'une de tes servantes. »
      14 Au moment du repas, Boaz dit à Ruth : « Approche-toi, mange du pain, trempe ton morceau dans la vinaigrette. » Elle s'assit à côté des moissonneurs. On lui donna du grain rôti ; elle mangea à satiété et garda le reste.
      15 Puis elle se leva pour ramasser des épis. Boaz donna cet ordre à ses serviteurs : « Qu'elle ramasse aussi des épis entre les gerbes et ne lui faites aucun mal.
      16 Vous retirerez même pour elle des gerbes quelques épis que vous la laisserez ramasser sans lui faire de reproches. »
      17 Elle ramassa des épis dans le champ jusqu'au soir, puis elle battit ce qu'elle avait récolté. Il y eut environ 22 litres d'orge.
      18 Elle l'emporta et rentra dans la ville, et sa belle-mère vit ce qu'elle avait ramassé. Elle sortit aussi les restes de son repas et les lui donna.
      19 Sa belle-mère lui dit : « Où as-tu ramassé des épis aujourd'hui ? Où as-tu travaillé ? Béni soit celui qui s'est intéressé à toi ! » Ruth raconta à sa belle-mère chez qui elle avait travaillé : « L'homme chez qui j'ai travaillé aujourd'hui s'appelle Boaz », dit-elle.
      20 Naomi dit à sa belle-fille : « Qu'il soit béni de l'Eternel, qui garde sa bonté pour les vivants comme pour les morts ! Cet homme nous est proche – lui dit encore Naomi – il est un de ceux qui ont droit de rachat sur nous. »
      21 Ruth la Moabite ajouta : « Il m'a dit aussi : ‘Reste avec mes serviteurs jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient terminé toute ma moisson.’ »
      22 Naomi dit à sa belle-fille Ruth : « Il est bon que tu sortes avec ses servantes, ma fille, et qu'on ne te rencontre pas dans un autre champ. »
      23 Ruth resta donc avec les servantes de Boaz pour ramasser des épis jusqu'à la fin de la moisson de l’orge et de la moisson du blé. Elle habitait avec sa belle-mère.

      Ruth 3

      1 Sa belle-mère Naomi lui dit : « Ma fille, je voudrais assurer ton repos afin que tu sois heureuse.
      2 Eh bien ! Boaz, l’homme dont tu as accompagné les servantes, n'est-il pas notre parent ? Or, il doit procéder cette nuit au tri de l’orge qui est dans l'aire de battage.
      3 Lave-toi et parfume-toi, puis remets tes habits et descends à l'aire. Tu ne te feras pas connaître à lui jusqu'à ce qu'il ait fini de manger et de boire.
      4 Quand il ira se coucher, observe l'endroit où il se couche. Ensuite va découvrir ses pieds et te coucher. Il te dira lui-même ce que tu as à faire. »
      5 Ruth lui répondit : « Je ferai tout ce que tu as dit. »
      6 Elle descendit à l'aire de battage et fit tout ce qu'avait ordonné sa belle-mère.
      7 Boaz mangea et but, et son cœur était joyeux. Il alla se coucher au bout du tas de gerbes. Ruth vint alors tout doucement, découvrit ses pieds et se coucha.
      8 Au milieu de la nuit, Boaz eut un frisson ; il se pencha et vit une femme couchée à ses pieds.
      9 Il dit : « Qui es-tu ? » Elle répondit : « Je suis Ruth, ta servante. Etends le pan de ton manteau sur ta servante, car tu as droit de rachat. »
      10 Il dit : « Sois bénie de l'Eternel, ma fille ! Ce dernier trait témoigne encore plus en ta faveur que le premier, car tu n'as pas recherché des jeunes gens, pauvres ou riches.
      11 Maintenant, ma fille, n’aie pas peur ! Je ferai pour toi tout ce que tu diras, car tout le monde chez nous sait que tu es une femme de valeur.
      12 Il est bien vrai que j'ai droit de rachat, mais il existe un autre parent, plus proche que moi, qui a ce droit.
      13 Passe la nuit ici. Demain, s'il veut exercer envers toi son droit de rachat, c’est bien, qu'il le fasse ; mais s'il ne lui plaît pas de l'exercer envers toi, je le ferai, moi, l'Eternel est vivant ! Reste couchée jusqu'au matin. »
      14 Elle resta couchée à ses pieds jusqu'au matin et se leva avant qu'on puisse se reconnaître l'un l'autre. Boaz dit : « Qu'on ne sache pas que cette femme est entrée dans l'aire de battage. »
      15 Et il ajouta : « Donne le manteau qui est sur toi, tiens-le. » Elle le tint et il compta 6 mesures d'orge qu'il chargea sur elle. Puis il entra dans la ville.
      16 Ruth revint chez sa belle-mère et Naomi dit : « Est-ce toi, ma fille ? » Ruth lui raconta tout ce que cet homme avait fait pour elle.
      17 Elle dit : « Il m'a donné ces 6 mesures d'orge en disant : ‘Tu ne retourneras pas les mains vides vers ta belle-mère.’ »
      18 Naomi dit : « Ma fille, reste tranquille jusqu'à ce que tu saches comment finira l’affaire, car cet homme ne se donnera pas de repos avant de l’avoir réglée aujourd'hui. »

      Ruth 4

      1 Boaz monta à la porte de la ville et s'y arrêta. Or, celui qui avait droit de rachat et dont Boaz avait parlé vint à passer. Boaz lui dit : « Approche-toi, assieds-toi ici, toi un tel. » Il s'approcha et s’assit.
      2 Boaz prit alors dix hommes parmi les anciens de la ville et dit : « Asseyez-vous ici. » Ils s'assirent.
      3 Puis il dit à celui qui avait le droit de rachat : « Naomi est revenue du pays de Moab, et elle vend la parcelle de terre qui appartenait à notre frère Elimélec.
      4 J'ai cru devoir t'en informer et te dire : ‘Fais-en l’acquisition devant les habitants de la ville et les anciens de mon peuple.’Si tu veux la racheter, rachète-la, mais si tu ne veux pas, déclare-le-moi afin que je le sache. En effet, il n'y a personne avant toi qui ait le droit de rachat et je l'ai après toi. » Il répondit : « Je la rachèterai. »
      5 Boaz dit : « Le jour où tu achèteras le champ à Naomi, tu l’acquerras aussi de Ruth la Moabite, la femme du défunt, et tu devras maintenir le nom du défunt sur son héritage. »
      6 Celui qui avait le droit de rachat répondit : « Je ne peux pas exercer ce droit de rachat pour mon compte, sinon je détruirai mon héritage. Prends pour toi mon droit de rachat, car je ne peux pas l’exercer. »
      7 Autrefois en Israël, pour valider toute affaire relative à un rachat ou à un échange, on retirait sa sandale et on la donnait à l'autre : c’était ce geste qui servait d’attestation en Israël.
      8 Celui qui avait le droit de rachat dit donc à Boaz : « Fais-en l’acquisition pour ton compte » et retira sa sandale.
      9 Alors Boaz dit aux anciens et à tout le peuple : « Vous êtes témoins aujourd'hui que j'ai acquis de la main de Naomi tout ce qui appartenait à Elimélec, à Kiljon et à Machlon,
      10 et que j’ai également acquis pour femme Ruth la Moabite, femme de Machlon, pour maintenir le nom du défunt sur son héritage afin qu’il ne disparaisse pas parmi ses frères ni à la porte de sa ville. Vous en êtes témoins aujourd'hui ! »
      11 Tout le peuple qui était à la porte et les anciens dirent : « Nous en sommes témoins ! Que l'Eternel rende la femme qui entre dans ta famille semblable à Rachel et à Léa, qui ont toutes les deux donné naissance à la communauté d'Israël ! Montre ta force dans Ephrata et fais-toi un nom dans Bethléhem !
      12 Puisse la descendance que l'Eternel te donnera par cette jeune femme faire ressembler ta famille à celle de Pérets, que Tamar a donné à Juda ! »
      13 Boaz épousa Ruth ; elle devint sa femme et il s’unit à elle. L'Eternel permit à Ruth de devenir enceinte et elle mit au monde un fils.
      14 Les femmes dirent à Naomi : « Béni soit l'Eternel qui ne t'a pas laissée manquer aujourd'hui d’une personne ayant le droit de rachat ! Que son nom soit célébré en Israël !
      15 Cet enfant sera ton réconfort et le soutien de ta vieillesse, car ta belle-fille qui t'aime l'a mis au monde, elle qui vaut mieux pour toi que sept fils. »
      16 Naomi prit l'enfant, le serra sur sa poitrine et l’éleva.
      17 Les voisines lui donnèrent un nom en disant : « Un fils est né à Naomi », et elles l'appelèrent Obed. Ce fut le père d'Isaï, père de David.
      18 Voici la lignée de Pérets.
      19 Pérets eut pour fils Hetsron, Hetsron eut Ram, Ram eut Amminadab,
      20 Amminadab eut pour fils Nachshon, Nachshon eut Salmon,
      21 Salmon eut pour fils Boaz, Boaz eut Obed,
      22 Obed eut pour fils Isaï et Isaï eut David.
