- 1 Samuel 1
  
  1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite:
  
  2 and he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
  
  3 This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there.
  
  4 When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
  
  5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb.
  
  6 Her rival provoked her severely, to make her fret, because Yahweh had shut up her womb.
  
  7 As he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of Yahweh, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and didn't eat.
  
  8 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why don't you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"
  
  9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of Yahweh's temple.
  
  10 She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, and wept bitterly.
  
  11 She vowed a vow, and said, "Yahweh of Armies, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your handmaid, and remember me, and not forget your handmaid, but will give to your handmaid a boy, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head."
  
  12 It happened, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Eli saw her mouth.
  
  13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
  
  14 Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunken? Put away your wine from you."
  
  15 Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh.
  
  16 Don't count your handmaid for a wicked woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation."
  
  17 Then Eli answered, "Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him."
  
  18 She said, "Let your handmaid find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way, and ate; and her facial expression wasn't sad any more.
  
  19 They rose up in the morning early, and worshiped before Yahweh, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her.
  
  20 It happened, when the time had come, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked him of Yahweh."
  
  21 The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
  
  22 But Hannah didn't go up; for she said to her husband, "Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and stay there forever."
  
  23 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may Yahweh establish his word." So the woman waited and nursed her son, until she weaned him.
  
  24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to Yahweh's house in Shiloh. The child was young.
  
  25 They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.
  
  26 She said, "Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to Yahweh.
  
  27 For this child I prayed; and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him.
  
  28 Therefore also I have granted him to Yahweh. As long as he lives he is granted to Yahweh." He worshiped Yahweh there.
  
  1 Samuel 2
  
  1 Hannah prayed, and said: "My heart exults in Yahweh! My horn is exalted in Yahweh. My mouth is enlarged over my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation.
  
  2 There is no one as holy as Yahweh, For there is no one besides you, nor is there any rock like our God.
  
  3 "Talk no more so exceeding proudly. Don't let arrogance come out of your mouth, For Yahweh is a God of knowledge. By him actions are weighed.
  
  4 "The bows of the mighty men are broken. Those who stumbled are armed with strength.
  
  5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread. Those who were hungry are satisfied. Yes, the barren has borne seven. She who has many children languishes.
  
  6 "Yahweh kills, and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol , and brings up.
  
  7 Yahweh makes poor, and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up.
  
  8 He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are Yahweh's. He has set the world on them.
  
  9 He will keep the feet of his holy ones, but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; for no man shall prevail by strength.
  
  10 Those who strive with Yahweh shall be broken to pieces. He will thunder against them in the sky. "Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed."
  
  11 Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. The child served Yahweh before Eli the priest.
  
  12 Now the sons of Eli were base men; they didn't know Yahweh.
  
  13 The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant came, while the flesh was boiling, with a fork of three teeth in his hand;
  
  14 and he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fork brought up the priest took therewith. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.
  
  15 Yes, before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man who sacrificed, "Give meat to roast for the priest; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw."
  
  16 If the man said to him, "Let the fat be burned first, and then take as much as your soul desires"; then he would say, "No, but you shall give it to me now; and if not, I will take it by force."
  
  17 The sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh; for the men despised the offering of Yahweh.
  
  18 But Samuel ministered before Yahweh, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod.
  
  19 Moreover his mother made him a little robe, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
  
  20 Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, "Yahweh give you seed of this woman for the petition which was asked of Yahweh." They went to their own home.
  
  21 Yahweh visited Hannah, and she conceived, and bore three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before Yahweh.
  
  22 Now Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons did to all Israel, and how that they lay with the women who served at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
  
  23 He said to them, "Why do you do such things? for I hear of your evil dealings from all this people.
  
  24 No, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: you make Yahweh's people disobey.
  
  25 If one man sin against another, God shall judge him; but if a man sin against Yahweh, who shall entreat for him?" Notwithstanding, they didn't listen to the voice of their father, because Yahweh intended to kill them.
  
  26 The child Samuel grew on, and increased in favor both with Yahweh, and also with men.
  
  27 A man of God came to Eli, and said to him, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Did I reveal myself to the house of your father, when they were in Egypt in bondage to Pharaoh's house?
  
  28 Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? Did I give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire?
  
  29 Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in my habitation, and honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?'
  
  30 "Therefore Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, 'I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever.' But now Yahweh says, 'Be it far from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
  
  31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father's house, that there shall not be an old man in your house.
  
  32 You shall see the affliction of my habitation, in all the wealth which I shall give Israel; and there shall not be an old man in your house forever.
  
  33 The man of yours, whom I shall not cut off from my altar, shall consume your eyes, and grieve your heart; and all the increase of your house shall die in the flower of their age.
  
  34 "'This shall be the sign to you, that shall come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall both die.
  
  35 I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind. I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before my anointed forever.
  
  36 It shall happen, that everyone who is left in your house shall come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and shall say, "Please put me into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread."'"
  
  1 Samuel 3
  
  1 The child Samuel ministered to Yahweh before Eli. The word of Yahweh was precious in those days; there was no frequent vision.
  
  2 It happened at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place (now his eyes had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see),
  
  3 and the lamp of God hadn't yet gone out, and Samuel had laid down in Yahweh's temple, where the ark of God was;
  
  4 that Yahweh called Samuel; and he said, "Here I am."
  
  5 He ran to Eli, and said, "Here I am; for you called me." He said, "I didn't call; lie down again." He went and lay down.
  
  6 Yahweh called yet again, "Samuel!" Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; for you called me." He answered, "I didn't call, my son; lie down again."
  
  7 Now Samuel didn't yet know Yahweh, neither was the word of Yahweh yet revealed to him.
  
  8 Yahweh called Samuel again the third time. He arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; for you called me." Eli perceived that Yahweh had called the child.
  
  9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
  
  10 Yahweh came, and stood, and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak; for your servant hears."
  
  11 Yahweh said to Samuel, "Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of everyone who hears it shall tingle.
  
  12 In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even to the end.
  
  13 For I have told him that I will judge his house forever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons brought a curse on themselves, and he didn't restrain them.
  
  14 Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be removed with sacrifice nor offering forever."
  
  15 Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of Yahweh. Samuel feared to show Eli the vision.
  
  16 Then Eli called Samuel, and said, "Samuel, my son!" He said, "Here I am."
  
  17 He said, "What is the thing that he has spoken to you? Please don't hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that he spoke to you."
  
  18 Samuel told him every bit, and hid nothing from him. He said, "It is Yahweh. Let him do what seems good to him."
  
  19 Samuel grew, and Yahweh was with him, and let none of his words fall to the ground.
  
  20 All Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of Yahweh.
  
  21 Yahweh appeared again in Shiloh; for Yahweh revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of Yahweh.
  
  1 Samuel 7
  
  1 The men of Kiriath Jearim came, and fetched up the ark of Yahweh, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of Yahweh.
  
  2 It happened, from the day that the ark stayed in Kiriath Jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after Yahweh.
  
  3 Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, "If you do return to Yahweh with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts to Yahweh, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines."
  
  4 Then the children of Israel removed the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and served Yahweh only.
  
  5 Samuel said, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray for you to Yahweh."
  
  6 They gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Yahweh, and fasted on that day, and said there, "We have sinned against Yahweh." Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.
  
  7 When the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. When the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
  
  8 The children of Israel said to Samuel, "Don't cease to cry to Yahweh our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines."
  
  9 Samuel took a suckling lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt offering to Yahweh: and Samuel cried to Yahweh for Israel; and Yahweh answered him.
  
  10 As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but Yahweh thundered with a great thunder on that day on the Philistines, and confused them; and they were struck down before Israel.
  
  11 The men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and struck them, until they came under Beth Kar.
  
  12 Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, "Yahweh helped us until now."
  
  13 So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more within the border of Israel. The hand of Yahweh was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
  
  14 The cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and Israel recovered its border out of the hand of the Philistines. There was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
  
  15 Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
  
  16 He went from year to year in circuit to Bethel and Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Israel in all those places.
  
  17 His return was to Ramah, for there was his house; and there he judged Israel: and he built there an altar to Yahweh.
  
  1 Samuel 8
  
  1 It happened, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
  
  2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah: they were judges in Beersheba.
  
  3 His sons didn't walk in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.
  
  4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel to Ramah;
  
  5 and they said to him, "Behold, you are old, and your sons don't walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."
  
  6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." Samuel prayed to Yahweh.
  
  7 Yahweh said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.
  
  8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also to you.
  
  9 Now therefore listen to their voice: however you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who shall reign over them."
  
  10 Samuel told all the words of Yahweh to the people who asked of him a king.
  
  11 He said, "This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them to him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots;
  
  12 and he will appoint them to him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and he will assign some to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots.
  
  13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
  
  14 He will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive groves, even their best, and give them to his servants.
  
  15 He will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
  
  16 He will take your male servants, and your female servants, and your best young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work.
  
  17 He will take the tenth of your flocks: and you shall be his servants.
  
  18 You shall cry out in that day because of your king whom you shall have chosen you; and Yahweh will not answer you in that day."
  
  19 But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, "No; but we will have a king over us,
  
  20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles."
  
  21 Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Yahweh.
  
  22 Yahweh said to Samuel, "Listen to their voice, and make them a king." Samuel said to the men of Israel, "Every man go to his city."
  
  1 Samuel 9
  
  1 Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor.
  
  2 He had a son, whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a better person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
  
  3 The donkeys of Kish, Saul's father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, "Take now one of the servants with you, and arise, go seek the donkeys."
  
  4 He passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they didn't find them: then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they weren't there: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they didn't find them.
  
  5 When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, "Come, and let us return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys, and be anxious for us."
  
  6 He said to him, "See now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says comes surely to pass. Now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us concerning our journey whereon we go."
  
  7 Then Saul said to his servant, "But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?"
  
  8 The servant answered Saul again, and said, "Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way."
  
  9 (In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he said, "Come, and let us go to the seer"; for he who is now called a prophet was before called a Seer.)
  
  10 Then Saul said to his servant, "Well said. Come, let us go." So they went to the city where the man of God was.
  
  11 As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, "Is the seer here?"
  
  12 They answered them, and said, "He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.
  
  13 As soon as you have come into the city, you shall immediately find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you shall find him."
  
  14 They went up to the city. As they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place.
  
  15 Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,
  
  16 "Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel; and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked on my people, because their cry has come to me."
  
  17 When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, "Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! this same shall have authority over my people."
  
  18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, "Please tell me where the seer's house is."
  
  19 Samuel answered Saul, and said, "I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today. In the morning I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart.
  
  20 As for your donkeys who were lost three days ago, don't set your mind on them; for they are found. For whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you, and for all your father's house?"
  
  21 Saul answered, "Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me like this?"
  
  22 Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons.
  
  23 Samuel said to the cook, "Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, 'Set it aside.'"
  
  24 The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, "Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because for the appointed time has it been kept for you, for I said, 'I have invited the people.'" So Saul ate with Samuel that day.
  
  25 When they had come down from the high place into the city, he talked with Saul on the housetop.
  
  26 They arose early: and it happened about the spring of the day, that Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, "Get up, that I may send you away." Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
  
  27 As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, "Tell the servant pass on before us" (and he passed on), "but stand still first, that I may cause you to hear the word of God."
  
  1 Samuel 10
  
  1 Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it on his head, and kissed him, and said, "Isn't it that Yahweh has anointed you to be prince over his inheritance?
  
  2 When you have departed from me today, then you shall find two men by Rachel's tomb, in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will tell you, 'The donkeys which you went to seek have been found; and behold, your father has stopped caring about the donkeys, and is anxious for you, saying, "What shall I do for my son?"'
  
  3 "Then you shall go on forward from there, and you shall come to the oak of Tabor; and three men shall meet you there going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three young goats, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:
  
  4 and they will greet you, and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive of their hand.
  
  5 "After that you shall come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall happen, when you have come there to the city, that you shall meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tambourine, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they will be prophesying:
  
  6 and the Spirit of Yahweh will come mightily on you, and you shall prophesy with them, and shall be turned into another man.
  
  7 Let it be, when these signs have come to you, that you do as occasion shall serve you; for God is with you.
  
  8 "You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: you shall wait seven days, until I come to you, and show you what you shall do."
  
  9 It was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs happened that day.
  
  10 When they came there to the hill, behold, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily on him, and he prophesied among them.
  
  11 It happened, when all who knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said one to another, "What is this that has come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?"
  
  12 One of the same place answered, "Who is their father?" Therefore it became a proverb, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"
  
  13 When he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.
  
  14 Saul's uncle said to him and to his servant, "Where did you go?" He said, "To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel."
  
  15 Saul's uncle said, "Please tell me what Samuel said to you."
  
  16 Saul said to his uncle, "He told us plainly that the donkeys were found." But concerning the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he didn't tell him.
  
  17 Samuel called the people together to Yahweh to Mizpah;
  
  18 and he said to the children of Israel, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, 'I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you:'
  
  19 but you have this day rejected your God, who himself saves you out of all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said to him, 'No! Set a king over us.' Now therefore present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes, and by your thousands."
  
  20 So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
  
  21 He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by their families; and the family of the Matrites was taken; and Saul the son of Kish was taken: but when they sought him, he could not be found.
  
  22 Therefore they asked of Yahweh further, "Is there yet a man to come here?" Yahweh answered, "Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage."
  
  23 They ran and fetched him there; and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
  
  24 Samuel said to all the people, "You see him whom Yahweh has chosen, that there is none like him among all the people?" All the people shouted, and said, "Let the king live!"
  
  25 Then Samuel told the people the regulations of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before Yahweh. Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
  
  26 Saul also went to his house to Gibeah; and there went with him the army, whose hearts God had touched.
  
  27 But certain worthless fellows said, "How shall this man save us?" They despised him, and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
  
  1 Samuel 12
  
  1 Samuel said to all Israel, "Behold, I have listened to your voice in all that you said to me, and have made a king over you.
  
  2 Now, behold, the king walks before you; and I am old and gray-headed; and behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my youth to this day.
  
  3 Here I am. Witness against me before Yahweh, and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind my eyes therewith? I will restore it to you."
  
  4 They said, "You have not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither have you taken anything of any man's hand."
  
  5 He said to them, "Yahweh is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand." They said, "He is witness."
  
  6 Samuel said to the people, "It is Yahweh who appointed Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
  
  7 Now therefore stand still, that I may plead with you before Yahweh concerning all the righteous acts of Yahweh, which he did to you and to your fathers.
  
  8 "When Jacob had come into Egypt, and your fathers cried to Yahweh, then Yahweh sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt, and made them to dwell in this place.
  
  9 "But they forgot Yahweh their God; and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab; and they fought against them.
  
  10 They cried to Yahweh, and said, 'We have sinned, because we have forsaken Yahweh, and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve you.'
  
  11 Yahweh sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you lived in safety.
  
  12 "When you saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said to me, 'No, but a king shall reign over us;' when Yahweh your God was your king.
  
  13 Now therefore see the king whom you have chosen, and whom you have asked for: and behold, Yahweh has set a king over you.
  
  14 If you will fear Yahweh, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of Yahweh, then both you and also the king who reigns over you are followers of Yahweh your God.
  
  15 But if you will not listen to the voice of Yahweh, but rebel against the commandment of Yahweh, then will the hand of Yahweh be against you, as it was against your fathers.
  
  16 "Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which Yahweh will do before your eyes.
  
  17 Isn't it wheat harvest today? I will call to Yahweh, that he may send thunder and rain; and you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of Yahweh, in asking for a king."
  
  18 So Samuel called to Yahweh; and Yahweh sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared Yahweh and Samuel.
  
  19 All the people said to Samuel, "Pray for your servants to Yahweh your God, that we not die; for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask us a king."
  
  20 Samuel said to the people, "Don't be afraid. You have indeed done all this evil; yet don't turn aside from following Yahweh, but serve Yahweh with all your heart.
  
  21 Don't turn aside to go after vain things which can't profit nor deliver, for they are vain.
  
  22 For Yahweh will not forsake his people for his great name's sake, because it has pleased Yahweh to make you a people to himself.
  
  23 Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against Yahweh in ceasing to pray for you: but I will instruct you in the good and the right way.
  
  24 Only fear Yahweh, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things he has done for you.
  
  25 But if you shall still do wickedly, you shall be consumed, both you and your king."
  
  1 Samuel 15
  
  1 Samuel said to Saul, "Yahweh sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of the words of Yahweh.
  
  2 Thus says Yahweh of Armies, 'I have marked that which Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up out of Egypt.
  
  3 Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and don't spare them; but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'"
  
  4 Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.
  
  5 Saul came to the city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.
  
  6 Saul said to the Kenites, "Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt." So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
  
  7 Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, that is before Egypt.
  
  8 He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
  
  9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the cattle, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and wouldn't utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
  
  10 Then the word of Yahweh came to Samuel, saying,
  
  11 "It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments." Samuel was angry; and he cried to Yahweh all night.
  
  12 Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told Samuel, saying, "Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, and turned, and passed on, and went down to Gilgal."
  
  13 Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, "You are blessed by Yahweh! I have performed the commandment of Yahweh."
  
  14 Samuel said, "Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?"
  
  15 Saul said, "They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the cattle, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God. We have utterly destroyed the rest."
  
  16 Then Samuel said to Saul, "Stay, and I will tell you what Yahweh has said to me last night." He said to him, "Say on."
  
  17 Samuel said, "Though you were little in your own sight, weren't you made the head of the tribes of Israel? Yahweh anointed you king over Israel;
  
  18 and Yahweh sent you on a journey, and said, 'Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.'
  
  19 Why then didn't you obey the voice of Yahweh, but took the spoils, and did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh?"
  
  20 Saul said to Samuel, "But I have obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
  
  21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and cattle, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God in Gilgal."
  
  22 Samuel said, "Has Yahweh as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Yahweh? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.
  
  23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected the word of Yahweh, he has also rejected you from being king."
  
  24 Saul said to Samuel, "I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of Yahweh, and your words, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
  
  25 Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Yahweh."
  
  26 Samuel said to Saul, "I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of Yahweh, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel."
  
  27 As Samuel turned about to go away, Saul grabbed the skirt of his robe, and it tore.
  
  28 Samuel said to him, "Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.
  
  29 Also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent."
  
  30 Then he said, "I have sinned: yet please honor me now before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and come back with me, that I may worship Yahweh your God."
  
  31 So Samuel went back with Saul; and Saul worshiped Yahweh.
  
  32 Then Samuel said, "Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites!" Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, "Surely the bitterness of death is past."
  
  33 Samuel said, "As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!" Samuel cut Agag in pieces before Yahweh in Gilgal.
  
  34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
  
  35 Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned for Saul: and Yahweh grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.
  
  1 Samuel 16
  
  1 Yahweh said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided a king for myself among his sons."
  
  2 Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." Yahweh said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.
  
  3 Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. You shall anoint to me him whom I name to you."
  
  4 Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, "Do you come peaceably?"
  
  5 He said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
  
  6 It happened, when they had come, that he looked at Eliab, and said, "Surely Yahweh's anointed is before him."
  
  7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, "Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for I see not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart."
  
  8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, "Neither has Yahweh chosen this one."
  
  9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. He said, "Neither has Yahweh chosen this one."
  
  10 Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, "Yahweh has not chosen these."
  
  11 Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your children here?" He said, "There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is keeping the sheep." Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and get him; for we will not sit down until he comes here."
  
  12 He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful face, and goodly to look on. Yahweh said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is he."
  
  13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
  
  14 Now the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him.
  
  15 Saul's servants said to him, "See now, an evil spirit from God troubles you.
  
  16 Let our lord now command your servants who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. It shall happen, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play with his hand, and you shall be well."
  
  17 Saul said to his servants, "Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me."
  
  18 Then one of the young men answered, and said, "Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Yahweh is with him."
  
  19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, "Send me David your son, who is with the sheep."
  
  20 Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by David his son to Saul.
  
  21 David came to Saul, and stood before him. He loved him greatly; and he became his armor bearer.
  
  22 Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Please let David stand before me; for he has found favor in my sight."
  
  23 It happened, when the spirit from God was on Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

  1 Il y avait un homme de Ramathaïm-Tsophim, de la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm, du nom d'Elkana. Il était le fils de Jeroham, fils d'Elihu, petit-fils de Thohu et arrière-petit-fils de Tsuph, et était éphraïmite.
  
  2 Il avait deux femmes. L'une s'appelait Anne, l'autre Peninna ; Peninna avait des enfants, tandis qu’Anne n'en avait pas.
  
  3 Chaque année, cet homme montait de sa ville jusqu’à Silo pour adorer l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers, et lui offrir des sacrifices. Là se trouvaient les deux fils d'Eli, Hophni et Phinées, qui étaient prêtres de l'Eternel.
  
  4 Le jour où Elkana offrait son sacrifice, il donnait des portions à sa femme Peninna et à tous les fils et à toutes les filles qu'il avait d'elle.
  
  5 Mais à Anne, il donnait une portion double, car il l’aimait, même si l'Eternel l’avait rendue stérile.
  
  6 Sa rivale la provoquait pour la pousser à s'irriter de ce que l'Eternel l'avait rendue stérile.
  
  7 Et toutes les années il en allait de même : chaque fois qu'Anne montait à la maison de l'Eternel, Peninna la provoquait de la même manière. Alors elle pleurait et ne mangeait pas.
  
  8 Son mari Elkana lui disait : « Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu et ne manges-tu pas ? Pourquoi ton cœur est-il attristé ? Est-ce que je ne vaux pas pour toi mieux que dix fils ? »
  
  9 Anne se leva, après que l'on eut mangé et bu à Silo. Le prêtre Eli était assis sur son siège, près de la porte du temple de l'Eternel.
  
  10 L'amertume dans l'âme, elle pria l'Eternel et pleura abondamment.
  
  11 Elle fit le vœu suivant : « Eternel, maître de l’univers, si tu consens à regarder la détresse de ta servante, si tu te souviens de moi, si tu n'oublies pas ta servante et lui donnes un fils, je le consacrerai à l'Eternel pour toute la durée de sa vie et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête. »
  
  12 Comme elle restait longtemps en prière devant l'Eternel, Eli observa sa bouche.
  
  13 Anne parlait dans son cœur et ne faisait que remuer les lèvres, on n'entendait pas sa voix. Eli pensa qu'elle était ivre,
  
  14 et il lui dit : « Jusqu'à quand seras-tu ivre ? Va cuver ton vin. »
  
  15 Anne répondit : « Ce n’est pas cela, mon seigneur. Je suis une femme à l’esprit abattu, je n'ai bu ni vin ni boisson enivrante, mais j'épanchais mon cœur devant l'Eternel.
  
  16 Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme légère, car c'est le trop-plein de ma douleur et de mon chagrin qui m'a fait parler jusqu'à présent. »
  
  17 Eli reprit la parole et dit : « Pars en paix et que le Dieu d'Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as adressée ! »
  
  18 Elle répondit : « Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux ! » Cette femme s'en alla. Elle se remit à manger et son visage ne fut plus le même.
  
  19 Ils se levèrent de bon matin et, après avoir adoré l'Eternel, ils partirent et retournèrent chez eux à Rama. Elkana eut des relations conjugales avec Anne, sa femme, et l'Eternel se souvint d'elle.
  
  20 Dans le cours de l'année, Anne devint enceinte et elle mit au monde un fils qu'elle appela Samuel, car, dit-elle, « je l'ai demandé à l'Eternel ».
  
  21 Son mari Elkana monta ensuite avec toute sa famille offrir à l'Eternel le sacrifice annuel et accomplir son vœu.
  
  22 Mais Anne ne monta pas à Silo. Elle dit à son mari : « Lorsque l'enfant sera sevré, je l’y conduirai afin qu'il soit présenté devant l'Eternel et qu'il reste là pour toujours. »
  
  23 Son mari Elkana lui dit : « Fais ce qui te semblera bon, attends de l'avoir sevré. Seulement, que l’Eternel accomplisse sa parole ! » La femme resta donc là et elle allaita son fils jusqu'au moment de son sevrage.
  
  24 Quand elle l'eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle à Silo. Elle prit 3 taureaux, 22 litres de farine et une outre de vin. Elle conduisit l’enfant à la maison de l'Eternel à Silo alors qu’il était encore tout jeune.
  
  25 Ils égorgèrent les taureaux et conduisirent l'enfant à Eli.
  
  26 Anne dit : « Mon seigneur, pardon, aussi vrai que ton âme vit, mon seigneur, c’est moi qui me tenais ici près de toi pour prier l'Eternel.
  
  27 C'était pour cet enfant que je priais, et l'Eternel a exaucé la prière que je lui adressais.
  
  28 Aussi, je veux le prêter à l'Eternel ; il sera toute sa vie prêté à l'Eternel. » Et ils se prosternèrent là devant l'Eternel.
  
  1 Samuel 2
  
  1 Anne fit cette prière : « Mon cœur se réjouit en l'Eternel, #ma force a été relevée par l'Eternel. #Ma bouche s'est ouverte contre mes ennemis, #car je me réjouis de ton secours. #
  
  2 Personne n'est saint comme l'Eternel. #Il n'y a pas d'autre Dieu que toi, #il n'y a pas de rocher pareil à notre Dieu.
  
  3 » Ne prononcez plus de paroles hautaines ! #Que l'arrogance ne sorte plus de votre bouche, #car l'Eternel est un Dieu qui sait tout #et qui pèse la valeur de toutes les actions.
  
  4 » L'arc des puissants est brisé, #et les faibles ont la force pour ceinture. #
  
  5 Ceux qui étaient rassasiés se louent pour du pain, #et ceux qui étaient affamés se reposent. #Même la stérile accouche sept fois, #et celle qui avait beaucoup d'enfants devient flétrie.
  
  6 » L'Eternel fait mourir et il fait vivre, #il fait descendre au séjour des morts et il en fait remonter. #
  
  7 L'Eternel appauvrit et il enrichit, #il abaisse et il élève. #
  
  8 De la poussière il retire le pauvre, #du fumier il relève le faible, #pour les faire asseoir avec les grands, #et il leur donne en possession un trône de gloire. » Oui, c’est à l'Eternel qu’appartiennent les fondements de la terre, #et c'est sur eux qu'il a établi le monde. #
  
  9 Il gardera les pas de ses bien-aimés, #tandis que les méchants seront réduits au silence dans les ténèbres. #En effet, l'homme ne triomphera pas par la force.
  
  10 » Les ennemis de l'Eternel trembleront. #Du haut du ciel il fera gronder son tonnerre contre eux. #L'Eternel jugera les extrémités de la terre. #Il donnera la puissance à son roi #et il relèvera la force de celui qu’il a désigné par onction. »
  
  11 Elkana repartit chez lui à Rama et l'enfant resta au service de l'Eternel devant le prêtre Eli.
  
  12 Les fils d'Eli étaient des vauriens qui ne connaissaient pas l'Eternel.
  
  13 Voici quelle était la manière d'agir de ces prêtres envers le peuple : lorsque quelqu'un offrait un sacrifice, le serviteur du prêtre arrivait au moment où l'on faisait cuire la viande ; tenant à la main une fourchette à trois dents,
  
  14 il piquait dans le récipient, dans le chaudron, dans la marmite ou dans le pot, et tout ce que la fourchette ramenait, le prêtre le prenait pour lui. Voilà comment ils agissaient vis-à-vis de tous les Israélites qui venaient à Silo.
  
  15 Avant même qu'on ne fasse brûler la graisse, le serviteur du prêtre arrivait et disait à celui qui offrait le sacrifice : « Donne de la viande à rôtir pour le prêtre ; il n’acceptera de ta part aucune viande cuite, c'est de la viande crue qu'il veut. »
  
  16 Si l'homme lui disait : « Quand on aura brûlé la graisse, tu prendras ce qui te plaira », le serviteur répondait : « Non ! Donne-la maintenant, sinon je la prends de force. »
  
  17 Ces jeunes gens se rendaient coupables d'un très grand péché devant l'Eternel, parce qu'ils traitaient avec mépris les offrandes faites à l'Eternel.
  
  18 Samuel faisait le service devant l'Eternel et cet enfant était habillé d'un éphod en lin.
  
  19 Sa mère lui faisait chaque année une petite robe et la lui apportait lorsqu’elle montait à Silo avec son mari pour offrir le sacrifice annuel.
  
  20 Eli bénit Elkana et sa femme en disant : « Que l'Eternel te fasse avoir des enfants de cette femme pour remplacer celui qu'elle a prêté à l'Eternel ! » Et ils repartirent chez eux.
  
  21 Lorsque l'Eternel fut intervenu pour Anne, elle devint enceinte et elle eut trois fils et deux filles. Quant au jeune Samuel, il grandissait devant l'Eternel.
  
  22 Eli était très âgé lorsqu’il apprit comment ses fils agissaient vis-à-vis de tout Israël. Il apprit aussi qu'ils couchaient avec les femmes qui se rassemblaient à l'entrée de la tente de la rencontre.
  
  23 Il leur dit : « Pourquoi faites-vous de telles choses ? En effet, tout le peuple me parle de vos mauvaises actions.
  
  24 Non, mes enfants, ce que j'entends dire n'est pas bon, vous faites pécher le peuple de l'Eternel.
  
  25 Si un homme pèche contre un autre homme, Dieu le jugera, mais s'il pèche contre l'Eternel, qui pourra intercéder en sa faveur ? » Mais ils n'écoutèrent pas leur père, car l'Eternel voulait les faire mourir.
  
  26 Le jeune Samuel continuait à grandir, et il était agréable aussi bien à l'Eternel qu’aux hommes.
  
  27 Un homme de Dieu se rendit vers Eli et lui dit : « Voici ce que dit l'Eternel : Ne me suis-je pas révélé aux membres de ta famille, lorsqu'ils étaient en Egypte et étaient esclaves du pharaon ?
  
  28 Je les ai choisis parmi toutes les tribus d'Israël pour être à mon service en tant que prêtres, pour monter à mon autel, pour brûler le parfum, pour porter l'éphod devant moi, et j'ai donné à la famille de ton père tous les sacrifices passés par le feu qu’offrent les Israélites.
  
  29 Pourquoi traitez-vous avec mépris mes sacrifices et mes offrandes, ceux que j'ai ordonné de faire dans ma demeure ? Et comment se fait-il que tu accordes plus d’importance à tes fils qu’à moi ? C’en est au point où vous vous engraissez des meilleures parts de toutes les offrandes d'Israël, mon peuple.
  
  30 C'est pourquoi, l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, déclare : J'avais certes dit que ta famille et celle de ton ancêtre marcheraient devant moi pour toujours, mais maintenant, l'Eternel le déclare, loin de moi cette intention ! En effet, j'honorerai celui qui m'honore, mais ceux qui me méprisent seront méprisés.
  
  31 Voici que viennent les jours où je vais briser ta force et celle de ta famille, de sorte qu'il n'y aura plus de vieillard chez toi.
  
  32 Tu verras un adversaire dans ma demeure, tandis qu'Israël sera comblé de biens par l'Eternel, et il n'y aura plus jamais de vieillard dans ta famille.
  
  33 Je laisserai subsister l'un des tiens près de mon autel afin d'épuiser tes yeux et d'attrister ton âme, mais tous les membres de ta famille mourront dans la force de l'âge.
  
  34 Tu auras pour signe ce qui arrivera à tes deux fils Hophni et Phinées : ils mourront tous les deux le même jour.
  
  35 Je ferai surgir pour moi un prêtre fidèle, qui agira selon mon cœur et selon mon désir. Je lui construirai une maison stable et il marchera toujours devant celui que j’aurai désigné par onction.
  
  36 Tous les membres restants de ta famille viendront se prosterner devant lui pour avoir une pièce d'argent et un morceau de pain ; ils diront : ‘Je t’en prie, rattache-moi à l'une des fonctions de prêtre, afin que j'aie un morceau de pain à manger.’ »
  
  1 Samuel 3
  
  1 Le jeune Samuel était au service de l'Eternel devant Eli. La parole de l'Eternel était rare à cette époque, les visions n'étaient pas fréquentes.
  
  2 Un jour, Eli, dont la vue commençait à faiblir et qui ne pouvait plus bien voir, était couché à sa place habituelle.
  
  3 La lampe de Dieu n'était pas encore éteinte et Samuel était couché dans le temple de l'Eternel, où se trouvait l'arche de Dieu.
  
  4 Alors l'Eternel appela Samuel. Il répondit : « Me voici »,
  
  5 courut vers Eli et dit : « Me voici, car tu m'as appelé. » Eli répondit : « Je n'ai pas appelé, retourne te coucher. » Et Samuel alla se coucher.
  
  6 L'Eternel appela de nouveau Samuel. Samuel se leva, alla vers Eli et dit : « Me voici, car tu m'as appelé. » Eli répondit : « Je n'ai pas appelé, mon fils, retourne te coucher. »
  
  7 Samuel ne connaissait pas encore l'Eternel, la parole de l'Eternel ne lui avait pas encore été révélée.
  
  8 L'Eternel appela de nouveau Samuel, pour la troisième fois. Samuel se leva, alla vers Eli et dit : « Me voici, car tu m'as appelé. » Eli comprit alors que c'était l'Eternel qui appelait l'enfant,
  
  9 et il dit à Samuel : « Va te coucher et, si l'on t'appelle, dis : ‘Parle, Eternel, car ton serviteur écoute.’ » Et Samuel alla se coucher à sa place.
  
  10 L'Eternel vint se tenir près de lui et appela comme les autres fois : « Samuel, Samuel ! » Samuel répondit : « Parle, car ton serviteur écoute. »
  
  11 Alors l'Eternel dit à Samuel : « Je vais faire en Israël une chose telle que toute personne qui l'apprendra en restera abasourdie.
  
  12 Ce jour-là j'accomplirai vis-à-vis d’Eli tout ce que j'ai prononcé contre sa famille ; je le commencerai et je le finirai.
  
  13 Je le lui ai déclaré, je veux punir sa famille pour toujours. En effet, il avait connaissance du crime par lequel ses fils se sont maudits et il ne leur a pas fait de reproches.
  
  14 C'est pourquoi je jure à la famille d'Eli que jamais son crime ne sera expié, ni par des sacrifices ni par des offrandes. »
  
  15 Samuel resta couché jusqu'au matin, puis il ouvrit les portes de la maison de l'Eternel. Il avait peur de raconter la vision à Eli,
  
  16 mais Eli l’appela et dit : « Samuel, mon fils ! » Il répondit : « Me voici ! »
  
  17 Eli dit : « Quelle est la parole que l'Eternel t'a adressée ? Ne m’en cache rien. Que Dieu te traite avec la plus grande sévérité, si tu me caches quoi que ce soit de tout ce qu'il t'a dit ! »
  
  18 Samuel lui raconta tout, sans rien lui cacher, et Eli dit : « C'est l'Eternel, qu'il fasse ce qui lui semblera bon ! »
  
  19 Samuel grandissait. L'Eternel était avec lui et ne laissa aucune de ses paroles rester sans effet.
  
  20 Tout Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer-Shéba, reconnut que Samuel était établi prophète de l'Eternel.
  
  21 L'Eternel continuait à apparaître à Silo ; en effet l'Eternel se révélait à Samuel à Silo en lui adressant la parole.
  
  1 Samuel 7
  
  1 Les habitants de Kirjath-Jearim vinrent et firent monter l'arche de l'Eternel chez eux. Ils la conduisirent dans la maison d'Abinadab, sur la colline, et ils consacrèrent son fils Eléazar pour la garder.
  
  2 Il s'était passé bien du temps depuis le jour où l'arche avait été déposée à Kirjath-Jearim. Vingt années avaient passé. Alors toute la communauté d'Israël poussa des gémissements vers l'Eternel.
  
  3 Samuel dit à toute la communauté d'Israël : « Si c'est de tout votre cœur que vous revenez à l'Eternel, enlevez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astartés, dirigez votre cœur vers l'Eternel et servez-le lui seul. Il vous délivrera alors de l’oppression des Philistins. »
  
  4 Les Israélites enlevèrent du milieu d'eux les Baals et les Astartés, et ils servirent l'Eternel seul.
  
  5 Samuel dit : « Rassemblez tout Israël à Mitspa et je prierai l'Eternel pour vous. » Et ils se rassemblèrent à Mitspa.
  
  6 Ils puisèrent de l'eau et la versèrent devant l'Eternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là en disant : « Nous avons péché contre l'Eternel ! » Samuel jugea les Israélites à Mitspa.
  
  7 Les Philistins apprirent que les Israélites s'étaient rassemblés à Mitspa, et les princes des Philistins montèrent pour attaquer Israël. A cette nouvelle, les Israélites eurent peur des Philistins,
  
  8 et ils dirent à Samuel : « N'arrête pas de crier pour nous à l'Eternel, notre Dieu, afin qu'il nous sauve de la domination des Philistins. »
  
  9 Samuel prit un tout jeune agneau et l'offrit tout entier en holocauste à l'Eternel. Il cria à l'Eternel pour Israël et l'Eternel l'exauça.
  
  10 Pendant que Samuel offrait l'holocauste, les Philistins s'approchèrent pour attaquer Israël. L'Eternel fit gronder ce jour-là son tonnerre sur les Philistins et les mit en déroute. Ils furent battus devant Israël.
  
  11 Les hommes d'Israël sortirent de Mitspa, poursuivirent les Philistins et les battirent jusqu'au-dessous de Beth-Car.
  
  12 Samuel prit une pierre qu'il plaça entre Mitspa et Shen, et il l'appela Eben-Ezer en disant : « Jusqu'ici l'Eternel nous a secourus. »
  
  13 Ainsi, les Philistins furent humiliés et ils ne vinrent plus sur le territoire d'Israël. La main de l'Eternel fut contre les Philistins pendant toute la vie de Samuel.
  
  14 Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises à Israël retournèrent à Israël, depuis Ekron jusqu'à Gath, avec leur territoire ; Israël les arracha à la domination des Philistins. Il y eut aussi paix entre Israël et les Amoréens.
  
  15 Samuel fut juge en Israël pendant toute sa vie.
  
  16 Il allait chaque année faire le tour de Béthel, de Guilgal et de Mitspa, et il jugeait Israël dans toutes ces villes.
  
  17 Puis il revenait à Rama, où se trouvait sa maison. Il y jugeait Israël et il construisit là un autel en l’honneur de l'Eternel.
  
  1 Samuel 8
  
  1 Lorsque Samuel devint vieux, il établit ses fils juges sur Israël.
  
  2 Son fils aîné se nommait Joël, et le second Abija. Ils étaient juges à Beer-Shéba.
  
  3 Les fils de Samuel ne marchèrent pas sur ses traces ; ils se livraient à des profits malhonnêtes, acceptaient des cadeaux et tordaient le droit.
  
  4 Tous les anciens d'Israël se rassemblèrent et allèrent trouver Samuel à Rama.
  
  5 Ils lui dirent : « Te voilà vieux et tes fils ne marchent pas sur tes traces. Maintenant, établis sur nous un roi pour nous juger, comme on en trouve dans toutes les nations. »
  
  6 Cela déplut à Samuel qu'ils disent : « Donne-nous un roi pour nous juger », et il pria l'Eternel.
  
  7 L'Eternel dit à Samuel : « Ecoute le peuple dans tout ce qu'il te dira, car ce n'est pas toi qu'ils rejettent, c'est moi, afin que je ne règne plus sur eux.
  
  8 Ils agissent envers toi comme ils l’ont toujours fait depuis que je les ai fait sortir d'Egypte jusqu'à aujourd’hui : ils m'ont abandonné pour servir d'autres dieux.
  
  9 Ecoute-les donc, mais donne-leur des avertissements, fais-leur connaître les droits du roi qui régnera sur eux. »
  
  10 Samuel rapporta toutes les paroles de l'Eternel au peuple qui lui demandait un roi.
  
  11 Il dit : « Voici quels seront les droits du roi qui régnera sur vous. Il prendra vos fils et les mettra sur ses chars ou parmi ses cavaliers, ou encore ils devront courir devant son char.
  
  12 Il fera d'eux des chefs de milliers et des chefs de cinquantaines. Il les emploiera à labourer ses terres, à récolter ses moissons, à fabriquer ses armes de guerre et l’équipement de ses chars.
  
  13 Il prendra vos filles pour faire d’elles des parfumeuses, des cuisinières et des boulangères.
  
  14 Il prendra la meilleure partie de vos champs, de vos vignes et de vos oliviers et la donnera à ses serviteurs.
  
  15 Il prendra la dîme du produit de vos champs et de vos vignes et la donnera à ses serviteurs.
  
  16 Il prendra vos esclaves et vos servantes, vos meilleurs bœufs et vos ânes et se servira d’eux pour ses travaux.
  
  17 Il prendra la dîme de vos troupeaux et vous serez vous-mêmes ses esclaves.
  
  18 Alors vous crierez contre votre roi, celui que vous vous serez choisi, mais l'Eternel ne vous exaucera pas. »
  
  19 Le peuple refusa d'écouter Samuel. « Cela ne fait rien, dirent-ils, il y aura quand même un roi sur nous,
  
  20 et nous aussi nous serons pareils à toutes les nations : notre roi nous jugera, il marchera à notre tête et conduira nos guerres. »
  
  21 Après avoir entendu toutes les paroles du peuple, Samuel les répéta à l'Eternel,
  
  22 et l'Eternel lui dit : « Ecoute-les et établis un roi sur eux. » Samuel dit aux hommes d'Israël : « Que chacun retourne dans sa ville. »
  
  1 Samuel 9
  
  1 Il y avait un homme de Benjamin, appelé Kis. Il était fils d'Abiel, petit-fils de Tseror, descendant de Becorath, d'Aphiach, lui-même fils d'un Benjaminite. C'était un vaillant guerrier.
  
  2 Il avait un fils du nom de Saül, qui était jeune et beau, plus beau que tous les Israélites, et qui les dépassait tous d’une tête.
  
  3 Les ânesses de Kis, le père de Saül, s'égarèrent et Kis dit à son fils Saül : « Prends avec toi l'un des serviteurs, lève-toi et va à la recherche des ânesses. »
  
  4 Saül traversa la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm et le pays de Shalisha sans les trouver ; ils passèrent par le pays de Shaalim et elles n'y étaient pas ; ils parcoururent le pays de Benjamin et ils ne les trouvèrent pas.
  
  5 Ils étaient arrivés dans le pays de Tsuph, lorsque Saül dit au serviteur qui l'accompagnait : « Viens, retournons chez nous. Sinon mon père oubliera les ânesses et s'inquiétera pour nous. »
  
  6 Le serviteur lui dit : « Il y a dans cette ville un homme de Dieu, et c'est un homme estimé. Tout ce qu'il dit arrive à coup sûr. Allons-y donc ! Peut-être nous fera-t-il connaître le chemin que nous devons prendre. »
  
  7 Saül dit à son serviteur : « Mais si nous y allons, qu’apporterons-nous à l'homme de Dieu ? En effet, il n'y a plus de provisions dans nos sacs et nous n'avons aucun cadeau à lui offrir. Qu'avons-nous ? »
  
  8 Le serviteur reprit la parole et dit à Saül : « J'ai sur moi un peu d'argent ; je le donnerai à l'homme de Dieu et il nous indiquera notre chemin. »
  
  9 Quand on allait consulter Dieu, on disait autrefois en Israël : « Venez, allons trouver le voyant ! » Celui qu'on appelle aujourd'hui « prophète » s'appelait en effet autrefois « voyant ».
  
  10 Saül dit à son serviteur : « Tu as raison. Viens, allons-y ! » Et ils se rendirent à la ville où se trouvait l'homme de Dieu.
  
  11 Alors qu’ils montaient à la ville, ils rencontrèrent des jeunes filles sorties pour puiser de l'eau et ils leur demandèrent : « Le voyant est-il ici ? »
  
  12 Elles leur répondirent : « Oui, il est devant toi, mais dépêche-toi : il est venu aujourd’hui en ville parce qu'il y a un sacrifice pour le peuple sur le haut lieu.
  
  13 Dès que vous serez entrés dans la ville, vous pourrez le trouver avant qu'il ne monte au haut lieu pour manger. En effet, le peuple ne mangera pas avant son arrivée, parce qu'il doit bénir le sacrifice ; après cela seulement, les invités mangeront. Montez donc, car vous le trouverez maintenant. »
  
  14 Ils montèrent alors à la ville. Ils étaient arrivés au milieu de la ville quand ils rencontrèrent Samuel qui sortait pour monter au haut lieu.
  
  15 Or, un jour avant l'arrivée de Saül, l'Eternel avait averti Samuel en disant :
  
  16 « Demain, à cette heure-ci, je t'enverrai un homme du pays de Benjamin. Tu le désigneras par onction comme chef de mon peuple, d'Israël. Il sauvera mon peuple de l’oppression des Philistins. En effet, j'ai regardé mon peuple parce que son cri est venu jusqu'à moi. »
  
  17 Lorsque Samuel eut aperçu Saül, l'Eternel lui dit : « Voici l'homme dont je t'ai parlé, c'est lui qui régnera sur mon peuple. »
  
  18 Saül s'approcha de Samuel au milieu de la porte de la ville et lui dit : « Indique-moi, je t’en prie, où se trouve la maison du voyant. »
  
  19 Samuel répondit à Saül : « C'est moi qui suis le voyant. Monte devant moi au haut lieu et vous mangerez aujourd'hui avec moi. Je te laisserai partir demain, après t’avoir donné réponse pour tout ce qui te préoccupe.
  
  20 Ne t'inquiète pas pour les ânesses que tu as perdues il y a trois jours, car elles sont retrouvées. Et pour qui est réservé tout ce qu'il y a de précieux en Israël ? N'est-ce pas pour toi et pour toute ta famille ? »
  
  21 Saül répondit : « Ne suis-je pas benjaminite, membre de l'une des plus petites tribus d'Israël, et mon clan n'est-il pas le plus insignifiant de tous ceux que compte la tribu de Benjamin ? Pourquoi donc me tiens-tu ce discours ? »
  
  22 Samuel prit Saül et son serviteur, les fit entrer dans la salle et leur donna une place à la tête des invités. Il y avait là une trentaine d’hommes.
  
  23 Samuel dit au cuisinier : « Sers la portion que je t'ai donnée en te disant de la mettre à part. »
  
  24 Le cuisinier préleva la cuisse et ce qui l'entoure, et il la servit à Saül. Samuel dit : « Voici ce qui a été réservé. Sers-toi et mange, car on l'a gardé pour toi lorsque j'ai invité le peuple. » Ainsi, Saül mangea avec Samuel ce jour-là.
  
  25 Ils redescendirent du haut lieu à la ville et Samuel s'entretint avec Saül sur la terrasse du toit.
  
  26 Puis ils se levèrent de bon matin. A l'aurore, Samuel appela Saül sur le toit en disant : « Viens et je te laisserai partir. » Saül se leva et ils sortirent tous les deux, Samuel et lui.
  
  27 Quand ils furent descendus à la limite de la ville, Samuel dit à Saül : « Dis à ton serviteur de passer devant nous. » Le serviteur passa devant. « Arrête-toi maintenant, reprit Samuel, et je vais te faire connaître la parole de Dieu. »
  
  1 Samuel 10
  
  1 Samuel prit une fiole d'huile qu'il versa sur la tête de Saül. Il l'embrassa et dit : « L'Eternel t'a désigné par onction pour que tu sois le chef de son héritage.
  
  2 Aujourd'hui, après m'avoir quitté, tu trouveras deux hommes près du tombeau de Rachel, sur la frontière de Benjamin, à Tseltsach. Ils te diront : ‘Les ânesses à la recherche desquelles tu es allé sont retrouvées. Maintenant ton père ne pense plus aux ânesses, mais il s'inquiète pour vous, il dit : Que dois-je faire au sujet de mon fils ?’
  
  3 De là tu iras plus loin et tu arriveras au chêne de Thabor, où tu rencontreras trois hommes en train de monter vers Dieu à Béthel. Ils portent l'un 3 chevreaux, l'autre 3 gâteaux de pain et l'autre une outre de vin.
  
  4 Ils te demanderont comment tu vas et te donneront deux pains. Tu les accepteras de leur part.
  
  5 Après cela, tu arriveras à Guibea-Elohim, où se trouve une garnison de Philistins. En entrant dans la ville, tu rencontreras une troupe de prophètes qui descendent du haut lieu, précédés du luth, du tambourin, de la flûte et de la harpe, et qui prophétisent.
  
  6 L'Esprit de l'Eternel viendra sur toi ; tu prophétiseras avec eux et tu deviendras un autre homme.
  
  7 Lorsque ces signes se seront réalisés pour toi, fais ce que tu trouveras à faire, car Dieu est avec toi.
  
  8 Puis tu descendras avant moi à Guilgal. Je descendrai vers toi pour offrir des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion. Tu attendras 7 jours, jusqu'à ce que j'arrive vers toi et que je te dise ce que tu dois faire. »
  
  9 Dès que Saül eut tourné le dos pour se séparer de Samuel, Dieu lui donna un autre cœur et tous ces signes se réalisèrent le même jour.
  
  10 Lorsqu'ils arrivèrent à Guibea, une troupe de prophètes vint à sa rencontre. L'Esprit de Dieu vint sur lui et il prophétisa au milieu d'eux.
  
  11 Tous ceux qui l'avaient connu auparavant virent qu'il prophétisait avec les prophètes, et les membres du peuple se disaient l'un à l'autre : « Qu'est-il arrivé au fils de Kis ? Saül est-il aussi parmi les prophètes ? »
  
  12 Quelqu'un de Guibea ajouta : « Et qui est leur père ? » De là vient le proverbe : « Saül est-il aussi parmi les prophètes ? »
  
  13 Lorsqu'il eut fini de prophétiser, Saül se rendit au haut lieu.
  
  14 Son oncle lui demanda, ainsi qu’à son serviteur : « Où êtes-vous allés ? » Saül répondit : « A la recherche des ânesses, mais nous ne les avons pas aperçues et nous sommes allés trouver Samuel. »
  
  15 L'oncle de Saül reprit : « Raconte-moi donc ce que vous a dit Samuel. »
  
  16 Saül répondit à son oncle : « Il nous a assuré que les ânesses étaient retrouvées. » Il ne lui dit rien de la royauté dont avait parlé Samuel.
  
  17 Samuel convoqua le peuple devant l'Eternel à Mitspa.
  
  18 Il annonça aux Israélites : « Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël : C’est moi qui ai fait sortir Israël d'Egypte, qui vous ai délivrés de la domination des Egyptiens et de tous les royaumes qui vous opprimaient.
  
  19 Et aujourd'hui, vous rejetez votre Dieu, celui qui vous a délivrés de tous vos maux et de toutes vos souffrances, et vous lui dites : ‘Etablis un roi sur nous !’Présentez-vous maintenant devant l'Eternel par tribus et par milliers. »
  
  20 Samuel fit approcher toutes les tribus d'Israël, et la tribu de Benjamin fut désignée.
  
  21 Il fit approcher la tribu de Benjamin clan par clan, et le clan de Matri fut désigné. Puis Saül, fils de Kis, fut désigné. On le chercha, mais on ne le trouva pas.
  
  22 On consulta de nouveau l'Eternel en demandant : « Y a-t-il encore un homme qui soit venu ici ? » L'Eternel dit : « Il est caché vers les bagages. »
  
  23 On courut le tirer de là et il se présenta au milieu du peuple. Il les dépassait tous d’une tête.
  
  24 Samuel dit à tout le peuple : « Voyez-vous celui que l'Eternel a choisi ? Il n'y a personne dans tout le peuple qui soit pareil à lui. » Et tout le peuple cria : « Vive le roi ! »
  
  25 Samuel fit alors connaître au peuple le droit relatif à la royauté, et il l'écrivit dans un livre qu'il déposa devant l'Eternel. Puis il renvoya tout le peuple, chacun chez soi.
  
  26 Saül aussi alla chez lui à Guibea, accompagné des hommes de valeur dont Dieu avait touché le cœur.
  
  27 Il y eut toutefois des vauriens qui dirent : « Quoi ! C'est celui-ci qui nous sauvera ! » Ils le méprisèrent et ne lui apportèrent aucun cadeau, mais Saül n'y prêta pas attention.
  
  1 Samuel 12
  
  1 Samuel dit à tout Israël : « Je vous ai écoutés dans tout ce que vous m'avez dit et j'ai établi un roi sur vous.
  
  2 Désormais, c’est le roi qui marchera à votre tête. Quant à moi, je suis vieux, j'ai les cheveux blancs, et mes fils sont avec vous. J'ai marché à votre tête depuis ma jeunesse jusqu'à aujourd’hui.
  
  3 Me voici ! Rendez témoignage contre moi, en présence de l'Eternel et de celui qu’il a désigné par onction. De qui ai-je pris le bœuf ou l'âne ? Qui ai-je opprimé ou traité durement ? De qui ai-je reçu un cadeau pour fermer les yeux sur lui ? Je vous le rendrai. »
  
  4 Ils répondirent : « Tu ne nous as pas opprimés, tu ne nous as pas traités durement et tu n'as rien reçu de personne. »
  
  5 Il leur dit encore : « L'Eternel et celui qu’il a désigné par onction sont témoins contre vous aujourd’hui que vous n'avez rien trouvé entre mes mains. » Et ils répondirent : « Ils en sont témoins. »
  
  6 Alors Samuel dit au peuple : « C'est l'Eternel qui a établi Moïse et Aaron et qui a fait sortir vos ancêtres d'Egypte.
  
  7 Maintenant, tenez-vous là et je vous jugerai devant l’Eternel sur tous les bienfaits qu’il vous a accordés, à vous et à vos ancêtres.
  
  8 Après la venue de Jacob en Egypte, vos ancêtres ont crié à l'Eternel et il a envoyé Moïse et Aaron. Ceux-ci ont fait sortir vos ancêtres d'Egypte et les ont fait habiter dans ce pays.
  
  9 Mais ils ont oublié l'Eternel, leur Dieu, et il les a vendus à Sisera, le chef de l'armée de Hatsor, aux Philistins et au roi de Moab, qui leur ont fait la guerre.
  
  10 Ils ont encore crié à l'Eternel en disant : ‘Nous avons péché, car nous avons abandonné l'Eternel et nous avons servi les Baals et les Astartés. Délivre-nous maintenant de nos ennemis, et nous te servirons.’
  
  11 L'Eternel a envoyé Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthé et Samuel, et il vous a délivrés des ennemis qui vous environnaient, et vous avez habité en sécurité.
  
  12 Puis, vous avez vu que Nachash, le roi des Ammonites, venait vous attaquer et vous m'avez dit : ‘Cela suffit. Il faut qu’un roi règne sur nous.’Et pourtant l'Eternel, votre Dieu, était votre roi.
  
  13 Voici donc le roi que vous avez choisi, que vous avez réclamé. L'Eternel a bien voulu établir un roi sur vous,
  
  14 à condition que vous craigniez l'Eternel, que vous le serviez, que vous lui obéissiez, que vous ne vous révoltiez pas contre sa parole, mais que vous vous attachiez à l'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous et le roi qui règne sur vous.
  
  15 Mais si vous n'obéissez pas à la voix de l'Eternel et si vous vous révoltez contre sa parole, la main de l'Eternel se portera contre vous, comme elle s’est portée contre vos ancêtres.
  
  16 Attendez encore ici et regardez l’acte extraordinaire que l'Eternel va réaliser sous vos yeux.
  
  17 Ne sommes-nous pas à l’époque de la moisson des blés ? Je vais faire appel à l'Eternel et il enverra le tonnerre et la pluie. Sachez et comprenez alors combien vous avez eu tort aux yeux de l'Eternel de réclamer un roi. »
  
  18 Samuel fit appel à l'Eternel et, le jour même, l'Eternel envoya du tonnerre et de la pluie. Tout le peuple éprouva une grande crainte vis-à-vis de l'Eternel et de Samuel,
  
  19 et tout le peuple dit à Samuel : « Prie l'Eternel, ton Dieu, pour nous tes serviteurs, afin que nous ne mourions pas. En effet, nous avons ajouté à tous nos péchés le tort de réclamer un roi. »
  
  20 Samuel dit au peuple : « N’ayez pas peur ! Vous avez certes fait tout ce mal, mais ne vous détournez pas de l'Eternel et servez-le de tout votre cœur.
  
  21 Ne vous détournez pas de lui, car cela reviendrait à suivre des choses sans valeur, qui ne peuvent apporter ni profit ni délivrance parce qu’elles sont elles-mêmes sans consistance.
  
  22 L'Eternel n'abandonnera pas son peuple, et ce à cause de son grand nom, car il a décidé de faire de vous son peuple.
  
  23 Je ne veux certes pas pécher contre l'Eternel en cessant de prier pour vous ! Au contraire, je vous enseignerai le chemin bon et droit.
  
  24 Seulement, craignez l'Eternel et servez-le fidèlement, de tout votre cœur. Voyez en effet quels actes extraordinaires il a accomplis parmi vous !
  
  25 Si en revanche vous faites le mal, vous disparaîtrez, vous et votre roi. »
  
  1 Samuel 15
  
  1 Samuel dit à Saül : « C'est moi que l'Eternel a envoyé pour te consacrer par onction comme roi sur son peuple, sur Israël. Ecoute donc les paroles prononcées par l'Eternel !
  
  2 ‘Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers : Je me souviens de ce que les Amalécites ont fait à Israël lorsqu'ils lui ont barré le chemin à sa sortie d'Egypte.
  
  3 Va maintenant frapper les Amalécites. Vouez à la destruction tout ce qui leur appartient. Tu ne les épargneras pas et tu feras mourir hommes et femmes, enfants et bébés, bœufs et brebis, chameaux et ânes.’ »
  
  4 Saül convoqua le peuple et le passa en revue à Thelaïm : il y avait 200'000 fantassins ainsi que 10'000 hommes de Juda.
  
  5 Saül marcha jusqu'à la ville d'Amalek et plaça une embuscade dans la vallée.
  
  6 Il dit aux Kéniens : « Partez, retirez-vous, quittez les Amalécites afin que je ne vous fasse pas subir le même sort qu’à eux. En effet, vous avez fait preuve de bonté envers tous les Israélites lorsqu'ils sont montés d'Egypte. » Les Kéniens se retirèrent alors du milieu des Amalécites.
  
  7 Saül porta des coups à Amalek depuis Havila jusqu'à Shur, qui fait face à l'Egypte.
  
  8 Il captura Agag, roi d'Amalek, vivant et il voua à la destruction tout le peuple en le passant au fil de l'épée.
  
  9 Mais Saül et le peuple épargnèrent Agag ainsi que les meilleures brebis, les meilleurs bœufs, les meilleures bêtes de la seconde portée, les agneaux gras et tout ce qu'il y avait de bon ; ils ne voulurent pas le vouer à la destruction. En revanche, ils exterminèrent tout ce qui était sans valeur et chétif.
  
  10 L'Eternel adressa la parole à Samuel :
  
  11 « Je regrette d'avoir établi Saül pour roi, car il se détourne de moi et n'accomplit pas mes paroles. » Samuel fut irrité et il cria à l'Eternel toute la nuit.
  
  12 Il se leva de bon matin pour aller à la rencontre de Saül. On vint lui dire : « Saül s’est rendu à Carmel et il s'y est érigé un monument. Puis il est reparti et, passant plus loin, il est descendu à Guilgal. »
  
  13 Samuel se rendit vers Saül, et Saül lui dit : « Sois béni de l'Eternel ! J'ai accompli la parole de l'Eternel. »
  
  14 Samuel dit : « Qu'est-ce donc que ce bêlement de brebis qui parvient à mes oreilles et ce mugissement de bœufs que j'entends ? »
  
  15 Saül répondit : « Ils les ont amenés de chez les Amalécites, parce que le peuple a épargné les meilleures brebis et les meilleurs bœufs afin de les offrir en sacrifice à l'Eternel, ton Dieu. Le reste, nous l'avons voué à la destruction. »
  
  16 Samuel dit à Saül : « Arrête ! Je vais te révéler ce que l'Eternel m'a dit cette nuit. » Saül lui dit : « Parle ! »
  
  17 Samuel dit : « Alors que tu étais petit à tes propres yeux, n'es-tu pas devenu le chef des tribus d'Israël et l'Eternel ne t'a-t-il pas désigné par onction pour que tu sois roi sur Israël ?
  
  18 L'Eternel t'avait envoyé en disant : ‘Va vouer à la destruction ces pécheurs que sont les Amalécites. Tu leur feras la guerre jusqu'à ce que tu les aies exterminés.’
  
  19 Pourquoi n'as-tu pas écouté l'Eternel ? Pourquoi t'es-tu jeté sur le butin et as-tu fait ce qu’il désapprouve ? »
  
  20 Saül répondit à Samuel : « J'ai écouté l'Eternel et j'ai suivi la voie où il m'envoyait. J'ai ramené Agag, le roi d'Amalek, et j'ai voué les Amalécites à la destruction.
  
  21 Mais le peuple a pris sur le butin les meilleures brebis et les meilleurs bœufs qui devaient être consacrés, afin de les offrir en sacrifice à l'Eternel, ton Dieu, à Guilgal. »
  
  22 Samuel dit : « L'Eternel trouve-t-il autant de plaisir dans les holocaustes et les sacrifices que dans l'obéissance à sa voix ? Non, l'obéissance vaut mieux que les sacrifices et l'écoute attentive vaut mieux que la graisse des béliers.
  
  23 Oui, la révolte est aussi coupable que la divination, et la résistance au Seigneur est aussi fautive que le recours aux théraphim. Puisque tu as rejeté la parole de l'Eternel, il te rejette lui aussi comme roi. »
  
  24 Alors Saül dit à Samuel : « J'ai péché, car j'ai enfreint l'ordre de l'Eternel et tes paroles. J’ai eu peur du peuple et je l'ai écouté.
  
  25 Maintenant, je t'en prie, pardonne mon péché, reviens avec moi et j'adorerai l'Eternel. »
  
  26 Samuel dit à Saül : « Je ne reviendrai pas avec toi, car tu as rejeté la parole de l'Eternel et l'Eternel te rejette. Tu ne seras plus roi sur Israël. »
  
  27 Alors que Samuel tournait le dos pour s'en aller, Saül l’attrapa par le pan de son manteau, qui fut arraché.
  
  28 Samuel lui dit : « L'Eternel t’arrache aujourd'hui la royauté d'Israël et la donne à un autre, qui est meilleur que toi.
  
  29 Celui qui est la force d'Israël ne ment pas et n’éprouve pas de regrets, car il n'est pas un homme pour avoir des regrets. »
  
  30 Saül répéta : « J'ai péché ! Maintenant honore-moi devant les anciens de mon peuple et devant Israël. Reviens avec moi et j'adorerai l'Eternel, ton Dieu. »
  
  31 Samuel revint à la suite de Saül, et Saül adora l'Eternel.
  
  32 Puis Samuel dit : « Amenez-moi Agag, le roi d'Amalek. » Agag s'avança vers lui d'un air joyeux ; il se disait : « Certainement, l'amertume de la mort s’est écartée. »
  
  33 Samuel dit : « De même que ton épée a privé des femmes de leurs enfants, de même ta mère sera privée d'un fils. » Et Samuel mit Agag en pièces devant l'Eternel à Guilgal.
  
  34 Samuel partit pour Rama et Saül remonta chez lui à Guibea de Saül.
  
  35 Samuel n'alla plus voir Saül jusqu'au jour de sa mort. En effet, il pleurait sur lui, parce que l'Eternel regrettait de l'avoir établi roi d'Israël.
  
  1 Samuel 16
  
  1 L'Eternel dit à Samuel : « Quand cesseras-tu de pleurer sur Saül ? Je l'ai rejeté afin qu'il ne règne plus sur Israël. Remplis ta corne d'huile et pars ! Je t'envoie chez Isaï, le Bethléhémite, car j'ai vu parmi ses fils celui que je désire pour roi. »
  
  2 Samuel dit : « Comment pourrais-je y aller ? Saül l'apprendra et me tuera. » L'Eternel dit : « Tu prendras une génisse avec toi et tu diras : ‘Je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Eternel.’
  
  3 Tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice. Je te préciserai ce que tu dois faire et tu désigneras par onction pour moi celui que je t’indiquerai. »
  
  4 Samuel fit ce que l'Eternel avait dit et se rendit à Bethléhem. Les anciens de la ville accoururent effrayés à sa rencontre et demandèrent : « Ton arrivée annonce-t-elle quelque chose d'heureux ? »
  
  5 Il répondit : « Oui, je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Eternel. Consacrez-vous et venez avec moi au sacrifice. » Il fit aussi consacrer Isaï et ses fils et les invita au sacrifice.
  
  6 Lorsqu'ils entrèrent, il se dit, en voyant Eliab : « Certainement, celui que l'Eternel désigne par onction est ici devant lui. »
  
  7 Mais l'Eternel dit à Samuel : « Ne prête pas attention à son apparence et à sa grande taille, car je l'ai rejeté. En effet, l’Eternel n’a pas le même regard que l’homme : l'homme regarde à ce qui frappe les yeux, mais l'Eternel regarde au cœur. »
  
  8 Isaï appela Abinadab et le fit passer devant Samuel. Samuel dit : « L'Eternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci. »
  
  9 Isaï fit passer Shamma et Samuel dit : « L'Eternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci. »
  
  10 Isaï fit passer sept de ses fils devant Samuel et Samuel dit à Isaï : « L'Eternel n'a choisi aucun d'eux. »
  
  11 Puis Samuel dit à Isaï : « Tous tes fils sont-ils là ? » Il répondit : « Il reste encore le plus jeune, mais il garde les brebis. » Alors Samuel dit à Isaï : « Envoie quelqu’un le chercher, car nous ne prendrons pas place avant qu'il ne soit arrivé. »
  
  12 Isaï envoya quelqu’un le chercher. Il était roux, avec de beaux yeux et une belle apparence. L'Eternel dit à Samuel : « Lève-toi, verse de l’huile sur lui, car c'est lui ! »
  
  13 Samuel prit la corne d'huile et le consacra par onction au milieu de ses frères. L'Esprit de l'Eternel vint sur David, à partir de ce jour et par la suite. Samuel se leva et partit à Rama.
  
  14 L'Esprit de l'Eternel se retira de Saül, et celui-ci fut tourmenté par un mauvais esprit envoyé par l'Eternel.
  
  15 Les serviteurs de Saül lui dirent : « Voici qu’un mauvais esprit envoyé par Dieu te tourmente.
  
  16 Que notre seigneur parle ! Tes serviteurs sont à ta disposition. Ils chercheront un homme qui sache jouer de la harpe. Quand le mauvais esprit envoyé par Dieu sera sur toi, il en jouera et tu seras soulagé. »
  
  17 Saül répondit à ses serviteurs : « Trouvez-moi donc un homme qui joue bien et amenez-le-moi. »
  
  18 L'un des serviteurs prit la parole et dit : « J'ai vu un fils d'Isaï, le Bethléhémite, qui sait jouer. C'est aussi un homme fort et vaillant, un guerrier. Il parle bien, a une belle apparence et l'Eternel est avec lui. »
  
  19 Saül envoya des messagers à Isaï pour lui dire : « Envoie-moi ton fils David, celui qui est avec les brebis. »
  
  20 Isaï prit un âne qu'il chargea de pain, d'une outre de vin et d'un chevreau, et il envoya tout cela à Saül par l’intermédiaire de son fils David.
  
  21 David arriva vers Saül et se présenta devant lui. Il plut beaucoup à Saül et il fut désigné pour porter ses armes.
  
  22 Saül fit dire à Isaï : « Je t’en prie, laisse David à mon service, car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux. »
  
  23 Lorsque le mauvais esprit envoyé par Dieu était sur Saül, David prenait la harpe et en jouait. Saül se calmait alors et se sentait mieux, et le mauvais esprit s'éloignait de lui.
