- Juges 13
  
  1 The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh; and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.
  
  2 There was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and didn't bear.
  
  3 The angel of Yahweh appeared to the woman, and said to her, "See now, you are barren, and don't bear; but you shall conceive, and bear a son.
  
  4 Now therefore please beware and drink no wine nor strong drink, and don't eat any unclean thing:
  
  5 for, behold, you shall conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb: and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines."
  
  6 Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, "A man of God came to me, and his face was like the face of the angel of God, very awesome; and I didn't ask him where he was from, neither did he tell me his name:
  
  7 but he said to me, 'Behold, you shall conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.'"
  
  8 Then Manoah entreated Yahweh, and said, "Oh, Lord, please let the man of God whom you did send come again to us, and teach us what we shall do to the child who shall be born."
  
  9 God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah, her husband, wasn't with her.
  
  10 The woman made haste, and ran, and told her husband, and said to him, "Behold, the man has appeared to me, who came to me that day."
  
  11 Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, "Are you the man who spoke to the woman?" He said, "I am."
  
  12 Manoah said, "Now let your words happen. What shall the child's way of life and mission be?"
  
  13 The angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, "Of all that I said to the woman let her beware.
  
  14 She may not eat of anything that comes of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe."
  
  15 Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, "Please, let us detain you, that we may make a young goat ready for you."
  
  16 The angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, "Though you detain me, I won't eat of your bread; and if you will prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to Yahweh." For Manoah didn't know that he was the angel of Yahweh.
  
  17 Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, "What is your name, that when your words happen, we may honor you?"
  
  18 The angel of Yahweh said to him, "Why do you ask about my name, since it is wonderful?"
  
  19 So Manoah took the young goat with the meal offering, and offered it on the rock to Yahweh. Then the angel did a wonderful thing as Manoah and his wife looked on.
  
  20 For it happened, when the flame went up toward the sky from off the altar, that the angel of Yahweh ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground.
  
  21 But the angel of Yahweh didn't appear to Manoah or to his wife any more. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Yahweh.
  
  22 Manoah said to his wife, "We shall surely die, because we have seen God."
  
  23 But his wife said to him, "If Yahweh were pleased to kill us, he wouldn't have received a burnt offering and a meal offering at our hand, neither would he have shown us all these things, nor would at this time have told such things as these."
  
  24 The woman bore a son, and named him Samson: and the child grew, and Yahweh blessed him.
  
  25 The Spirit of Yahweh began to move him in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
  
  Juges 14
  
  1 Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines.
  
  2 He came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, "I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me as wife."
  
  3 Then his father and his mother said to him, "Is there never a woman among the daughters of your brothers, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?" Samson said to his father, "Get her for me; for she pleases me well."
  
  4 But his father and his mother didn't know that it was of Yahweh; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines had rule over Israel.
  
  5 Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah: and behold, a young lion roared against him.
  
  6 The Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on him, and he tore him as he would have torn a young goat; and he had nothing in his hand: but he didn't tell his father or his mother what he had done.
  
  7 He went down, and talked with the woman, and she pleased Samson well.
  
  8 After a while he returned to take her; and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey.
  
  9 He took it into his hands, and went on, eating as he went; and he came to his father and mother, and gave to them, and they ate: but he didn't tell them that he had taken the honey out of the body of the lion.
  
  10 His father went down to the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.
  
  11 It happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
  
  12 Samson said to them, "Let me tell you a riddle now. If you can declare it to me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing;
  
  13 but if you can't declare it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing." They said to him, "Put forth your riddle, that we may hear it."
  
  14 He said to them, "Out of the eater came forth food. Out of the strong came forth sweetness." They couldn't in three days declare the riddle.
  
  15 It happened on the seventh day, that they said to Samson's wife, "Entice your husband, that he may declare to us the riddle, lest we burn you and your father's house with fire. Have you called us to impoverish us? Is it not so?"
  
  16 Samson's wife wept before him, and said, "You just hate me, and don't love me. You have put forth a riddle to the children of my people, and haven't told it me." He said to her, "Behold, I haven't told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?"
  
  17 She wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it happened on the seventh day, that he told her, because she pressed him severely; and she told the riddle to the children of her people.
  
  18 The men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, "What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?" He said to them, "If you hadn't plowed with my heifer, you wouldn't have found out my riddle."
  
  19 The Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and struck thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave the changes of clothing to those who declared the riddle. His anger was kindled, and he went up to his father's house.
  
  20 But Samson's wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.
  
  Juges 15
  
  1 But it happened after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a young goat; and he said, "I will go in to my wife into the room." But her father wouldn't allow him to go in.
  
  2 Her father said, "I most certainly thought that you had utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Isn't her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please take her, instead."
  
  3 Samson said to them, "This time I will be blameless in regard of the Philistines, when I harm them."
  
  4 Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches, and turned tail to tail, and put a torch in the midst between every two tails.
  
  5 When he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks and the standing grain, and also the olive groves.
  
  6 Then the Philistines said, "Who has done this?" They said, "Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife, and given her to his companion." The Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.
  
  7 Samson said to them, "If you behave like this, surely I will be avenged of you, and after that I will cease."
  
  8 He struck them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and lived in the cleft of the rock of Etam.
  
  9 Then the Philistines went up, and encamped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.
  
  10 The men of Judah said, "Why have you come up against us?" They said, "We have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he has done to us."
  
  11 Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, "Don't you know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?" He said to them, "As they did to me, so have I done to them."
  
  12 They said to him, "We have come down to bind you, that we may deliver you into the hand of the Philistines." Samson said to them, "Swear to me that you will not fall on me yourselves."
  
  13 They spoke to him, saying, "No; but we will bind you fast, and deliver you into their hand; but surely we will not kill you." They bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock.
  
  14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him: and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on him, and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands dropped from off his hands.
  
  15 He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, and put forth his hand, and took it, and struck a thousand men therewith.
  
  16 Samson said, "With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps on heaps; with the jawbone of a donkey I have struck a thousand men."
  
  17 It happened, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramath Lehi.
  
  18 He was very thirsty, and called on Yahweh, and said, "You have given this great deliverance by the hand of your servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?"
  
  19 But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi, and water came out of it. When he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: therefore its name was called En Hakkore, which is in Lehi, to this day.
  
  20 He judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.
  
  Juges 16
  
  1 Samson went to Gaza, and saw there a prostitute, and went in to her.
  
  2 The Gazites were told, "Samson is here!" They surrounded him, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, "Wait until morning light, then we will kill him."
  
  3 Samson lay until midnight, and arose at midnight, and laid hold of the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and plucked them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron.
  
  4 It came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
  
  5 The lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, "Entice him, and see in which his great strength lies, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver."
  
  6 Delilah said to Samson, "Please tell me where your great strength lies, and what you might be bound to afflict you."
  
  7 Samson said to her, "If they bind me with seven green cords that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as another man."
  
  8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green cords which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
  
  9 Now she had an ambush waiting in the inner room. She said to him, "The Philistines are on you, Samson!" He broke the cords, as a string of tow is broken when it touches the fire. So his strength was not known.
  
  10 Delilah said to Samson, "Behold, you have mocked me, and told me lies: now please tell me with which you might be bound."
  
  11 He said to her, "If they only bind me with new ropes with which no work has been done, then shall I become weak, and be as another man."
  
  12 So Delilah took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said to him, "The Philistines are on you, Samson!" The ambush was waiting in the inner room. He broke them off his arms like a thread.
  
  13 Delilah said to Samson, "Until now, you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me with what you might be bound." He said to her, "If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web."
  
  14 She fastened it with the pin, and said to him, "The Philistines are on you, Samson!" He awakened out of his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the beam, and the web.
  
  15 She said to him, "How can you say, 'I love you,' when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and have not told me where your great strength lies."
  
  16 It happened, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was troubled to death.
  
  17 He told her all his heart, and said to her, "No razor has ever come on my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me, and I will become weak, and be like any other man."
  
  18 When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, "Come up this once, for he has told me all his heart." Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money in their hand.
  
  19 She made him sleep on her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.
  
  20 She said, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" He awoke out of his sleep, and said, "I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free." But he didn't know that Yahweh had departed from him.
  
  21 The Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he ground at the mill in the prison.
  
  22 However the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaved.
  
  23 The lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, "Our god has delivered Samson our enemy into our hand."
  
  24 When the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, "Our god has delivered our enemy and the destroyer of our country, who has slain many of us, into our hand."
  
  25 It happened, when their hearts were merry, that they said, "Call for Samson, that he may entertain us." They called for Samson out of the prison; and he performed before them. They set him between the pillars;
  
  26 and Samson said to the boy who held him by the hand, "Allow me to feel the pillars whereupon the house rests, that I may lean on them."
  
  27 Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were on the roof about three thousand men and women, who saw while Samson performed.
  
  28 Samson called to Yahweh, and said, "Lord Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once, God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes."
  
  29 Samson took hold of the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and leaned on them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left.
  
  30 Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines!" He bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell on the lords, and on all the people who were therein. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than those who he killed in his life.
  
  31 Then his brothers and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burial site of Manoah his father. He judged Israel twenty years.

  1 Les Israélites firent encore ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel et l'Eternel les livra entre les mains des Philistins pendant 40 ans.
  
  2 Il y avait un homme de Tsorea, du clan des Danites, qui s'appelait Manoach. Sa femme était stérile et n’avait pas d’enfants.
  
  3 L'ange de l'Eternel apparut à la femme et lui dit : « Te voici stérile, sans enfants. Tu deviendras enceinte et tu mettras au monde un fils.
  
  4 Maintenant fais bien attention de ne boire ni vin ni liqueur forte et de ne rien manger d'impur,
  
  5 car tu vas devenir enceinte et tu mettras au monde un fils. Le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête, parce que cet enfant sera consacré à Dieu dès le ventre de sa mère. Ce sera lui qui commencera à délivrer Israël de la domination des Philistins. »
  
  6 La femme alla dire à son mari : « Un homme de Dieu est venu vers moi et il ressemblait à un ange de Dieu, il avait l’air effrayant. Je ne lui ai pas demandé d'où il venait et il ne m'a pas fait connaître son nom,
  
  7 mais il m'a dit : ‘Tu vas devenir enceinte et tu mettras au monde un fils. Maintenant ne bois ni vin ni liqueur forte et ne mange rien d'impur, parce que cet enfant sera consacré à Dieu dès le ventre de sa mère jusqu'au jour de sa mort.’ »
  
  8 Manoach fit cette prière à l'Eternel : « Ah ! Seigneur, que l'homme de Dieu que tu as envoyé vienne encore vers nous et qu'il nous enseigne ce que nous devons faire pour l'enfant qui naîtra ! »
  
  9 Dieu exauça la prière de Manoach et l'ange de Dieu vint encore vers la femme. Elle se trouvait dans un champ et Manoach, son mari, n'était pas avec elle.
  
  10 Elle courut vite annoncer la nouvelle à son mari et lui dit : « L'homme qui est venu l'autre jour vers moi m'est apparu. »
  
  11 Manoach se leva pour suivre sa femme, alla vers l'homme et lui demanda : « Est-ce toi qui as parlé à ma femme ? » Il répondit : « C'est moi. »
  
  12 Manoach dit : « Lorsque ta parole s'accomplira, comment faudra-t-il agir vis-à-vis de l'enfant et qu'y aura-t-il à faire ? »
  
  13 L'ange de l'Eternel répondit à Manoach : « Ta femme s'abstiendra de tout ce que je lui ai dit.
  
  14 Elle ne goûtera à aucun produit de la vigne, elle ne boira ni vin ni liqueur forte et elle ne mangera rien d'impur. Elle respectera tout ce que je lui ai prescrit. »
  
  15 Manoach dit à l'ange de l'Eternel : « Permets-nous de te retenir et de te préparer un chevreau. »
  
  16 L'ange de l'Eternel répondit à Manoach : « Même si tu me retiens, je ne mangerai pas de ton plat. En revanche, si tu veux faire un holocauste, offre-le à l'Eternel. » Manoach ne savait pas que c'était un ange de l'Eternel.
  
  17 Il dit à l'ange de l'Eternel : « Quel est ton nom, afin que nous te donnions gloire quand ta parole s'accomplira ? »
  
  18 L'ange de l'Eternel lui répondit : « Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom ? Il est merveilleux. »
  
  19 Manoach prit le chevreau et l'offrande, et il fit un sacrifice à l'Eternel sur le rocher. Il se produisit quelque chose de merveilleux, pendant que Manoach et sa femme regardaient :
  
  20 pendant que la flamme montait de l'autel vers le ciel, l'ange de l'Eternel monta dans cette flamme. A cette vue, Manoach et sa femme tombèrent le visage contre terre.
  
  21 L'ange de l'Eternel ne leur fut plus visible. Manoach comprit alors que c'était l'ange de l'Eternel,
  
  22 et il dit à sa femme : « Nous allons mourir, car nous avons vu Dieu. »
  
  23 Sa femme lui répondit : « Si l'Eternel avait voulu nous faire mourir, il n'aurait pas pris de nos mains l'holocauste et l'offrande, il ne nous aurait pas fait voir tout cela et il ne nous aurait pas maintenant fait entendre de pareilles choses. »
  
  24 La femme mit au monde un fils et l’appela Samson. L'enfant grandit et l'Eternel le bénit.
  
  25 L'Esprit de l'Eternel commença à le pousser à l’action à Machané-Dan, entre Tsorea et Eshthaol.
  
  Juges 14
  
  1 Samson descendit à Thimna, et il y vit une jeune fille philistine.
  
  2 A son retour chez lui, il annonça à son père et à sa mère : « J'ai vu une jeune fille philistine à Thimna. Prenez-la maintenant pour ma femme. »
  
  3 Son père et sa mère lui dirent : « N'y a-t-il donc pas de femme dans notre tribu et dans notre peuple tout entier, pour que tu ailles prendre une femme chez les Philistins, ces incirconcis ? » Samson répéta à son père : « Prends-la pour moi, car elle me plaît. »
  
  4 Son père et sa mère ne savaient pas que cela venait de l'Eternel. Samson cherchait en effet une occasion de dispute avec les Philistins. A cette époque-là, les Philistins dominaient sur Israël.
  
  5 Samson descendit avec son père et sa mère à Thimna. Lorsqu'ils arrivèrent aux vignes de Thimna, un jeune lion rugissant vint à sa rencontre.
  
  6 L'Esprit de l'Eternel vint sur Samson et, sans rien à la main, il déchira le lion comme s’il s’agissait d’un chevreau. Il ne dit pas à son père et à sa mère ce qu'il avait fait.
  
  7 Une fois descendu, il parla à la femme et elle lui plut.
  
  8 Quelque temps après, il se rendit de nouveau à Thimna pour l’épouser et il fit un détour pour voir le cadavre du lion. Il constata qu’il y avait un essaim d'abeilles et du miel dans le corps du lion.
  
  9 Il prit le miel dans ses mains et en mangea pendant la route. Arrivé près de son père et de sa mère, il leur en donna et ils en mangèrent, mais il ne leur dit pas qu'il avait pris ce miel dans le corps du lion.
  
  10 Le père de Samson descendit chez la femme et là, Samson fit un festin, car c'était la coutume chez les jeunes hommes.
  
  11 Dès qu'on le vit, on invita 30 compagnons qui restèrent avec lui.
  
  12 Samson leur dit : « Je vais vous proposer une énigme. Si vous réussissez à m’en donner l’explication au cours des 7 jours du festin, si vous la découvrez, je vous donnerai 30 chemises et 30 vêtements de rechange.
  
  13 Mais si vous ne pouvez pas m’en donner l’explication, ce sera vous qui me donnerez 30 chemises et 30 vêtements de rechange. » Ils lui dirent : « Propose ton énigme et nous l'écouterons. »
  
  14 Et il leur dit : « De celui qui mange est sorti ce qui se mange, et du fort est sorti le doux. » Pendant 3 jours, ils ne purent expliquer l'énigme.
  
  15 Le quatrième jour, ils dirent à la femme de Samson : « Flatte ton mari pour qu’il nous donne l’explication de l'énigme. Sinon, nous te brûlerons, toi et ta famille. C'est pour nous dépouiller que vous nous avez invités, n'est-ce pas ? »
  
  16 La femme de Samson se mit à pleurer auprès de lui et à dire : « Tu n'as pour moi que de la haine, tu ne m'aimes pas : tu as proposé une énigme aux membres de mon peuple et tu ne me l'as pas expliquée ! » Il lui répondait : « Je ne l'ai expliquée ni à mon père ni à ma mère. Est-ce à toi que je l'expliquerais ? »
  
  17 Elle pleura auprès de lui jusqu’à la fin des 7 jours que dura leur festin. Le septième jour, il la lui expliqua, car elle le harcelait. Elle donna alors l'explication de l'énigme aux membres de son peuple.
  
  18 Les habitants de la ville dirent à Samson le septième jour, avant le coucher du soleil : « Quoi de plus doux que le miel et quoi de plus fort que le lion ? » Il leur répondit : « Si vous n'aviez pas labouré avec ma génisse, vous n'auriez pas découvert mon énigme. »
  
  19 L'Esprit de l'Eternel vint sur lui et il descendit à Askalon. Il y tua 30 hommes, prit leurs affaires et donna les vêtements de rechange à ceux qui avaient donné l’explication de l'énigme. Rempli de colère, il remonta chez son père.
  
  20 Sa femme fut donnée en mariage à l'un de ses compagnons, avec lequel il était lié d’amitié.
  
  Juges 15
  
  1 Quelque temps après, à l'époque de la moisson des blés, Samson alla voir sa femme en lui apportant un chevreau. Il dit : « Je veux entrer vers ma femme dans sa chambre. » Mais le père de sa femme ne lui permit pas d'entrer.
  
  2 « J'ai pensé, dit-il, que tu avais de la haine envers elle et je l'ai donnée à ton compagnon. Sa jeune sœur n'est-elle pas plus belle qu'elle ? Epouse-la donc à sa place. »
  
  3 Samson leur dit : « Cette fois je ne serai pas coupable envers les Philistins, si je leur fais du mal. »
  
  4 Samson s'en alla. Il attrapa 300 renards et prit des flambeaux. Puis il attacha les renards par la queue, deux par deux, en mettant une torche au milieu des queues.
  
  5 Il alluma les flambeaux, lâcha les renards dans les blés des Philistins et mit ainsi le feu aux tas de gerbes, au blé sur pied et même aux plantations d'oliviers.
  
  6 Les Philistins demandèrent : « Qui a fait cela ? » On répondit : « C’est Samson, le gendre du Thimnien, parce que ce dernier lui a pris sa femme et l'a donnée à son compagnon. » Les Philistins montèrent et la brûlèrent, ainsi que son père.
  
  7 Samson leur dit : « Est-ce ainsi que vous agissez ? Je ne m’arrêterai qu'après m'être vengé de vous. »
  
  8 Il les battit à plate couture, puis il descendit et se retira dans la grotte du rocher d'Etam.
  
  9 Alors les Philistins se mirent en marche, campèrent en Juda et se déployèrent jusqu'à Léchi.
  
  10 Les hommes de Juda dirent : « Pourquoi êtes-vous montés contre nous ? » Ils répondirent : « Nous sommes montés pour capturer Samson, afin de le traiter comme il nous a traités. »
  
  11 Sur quoi 3000 Judéens descendirent à la grotte du rocher d'Etam et dirent à Samson : « Ne sais-tu pas que les Philistins exercent leur domination sur nous ? Que nous as-tu donc fait ? » Il leur répondit : « Je les ai traités comme ils m'ont traité. »
  
  12 Ils lui dirent : « Nous sommes descendus pour te capturer afin de te livrer entre les mains des Philistins. » Samson leur dit : « Jurez-moi que vous ne me tuerez pas. »
  
  13 Ils lui répondirent : « Non. Nous voulons seulement t’attacher et te livrer entre leurs mains, mais nous ne te ferons pas mourir. » Ils l’attachèrent avec deux cordes neuves et le firent sortir de la grotte.
  
  14 Lorsqu'il arriva à Léchi, les Philistins poussèrent des cris en le voyant. Alors l'Esprit de l'Eternel vint sur lui. Les cordes qu'il avait aux bras devinrent pareilles à du lin brûlé par le feu et ses liens tombèrent de ses mains.
  
  15 Il trouva une mâchoire d'âne fraîche, tendit la main pour la prendre et tua 1000 hommes avec elle.
  
  16 Samson dit alors : « Avec une mâchoire d'âne, j’ai fait un tas, deux tas. Avec une mâchoire d'âne, j'ai tué 1000 hommes. »
  
  17 Quand il eut fini de parler, il jeta la mâchoire. Et l'on appela cet endroit Ramath-Léchi.
  
  18 Pressé par la soif, Samson fit appel à l'Eternel en disant : « C'est toi qui as permis cette grande délivrance par l’intermédiaire de ton serviteur. Et maintenant, devrais-je mourir de soif et tomber entre les mains des incirconcis ? »
  
  19 Dieu fendit la cavité du rocher qui se trouve à Léchi et il en sortit de l'eau. Samson but, il retrouva ses forces et reprit vie. C'est pour cela qu'on a appelé cette source En-Hakkoré. Elle existe aujourd'hui encore à Léchi.
  
  20 Samson fut juge en Israël à l’époque des Philistins, pendant vingt ans.
  
  Juges 16
  
  1 Samson partit pour Gaza. Il y vit une prostituée et entra chez elle.
  
  2 On dit aux habitants de Gaza : « Samson est arrivé ici. » Ils l'encerclèrent et se tinrent toute la nuit en embuscade à la porte de la ville. Ils restèrent tranquilles toute la nuit, se disant : « Au lever du jour, nous le tuerons. »
  
  3 Samson resta couché jusqu'à minuit. Vers minuit, il se leva, attrapa les battants de la porte de la ville ainsi que leurs deux montants, les arracha avec la barre, les mit sur ses épaules et les transporta au sommet de la montagne qui fait face à Hébron.
  
  4 Après cela, il aima une femme dans la vallée de Sorek. Elle s’appelait Delila.
  
  5 Les princes des Philistins montèrent vers elle et lui dirent : « Flatte-le pour savoir d'où lui vient sa grande force et comment nous pourrions le maîtriser. Nous l’attacherons pour le dompter et nous te donnerons chacun 1100 pièces d'argent. »
  
  6 Delila dit à Samson : « Dis-moi donc d'où vient ta grande force et avec quoi il faudrait t’attacher pour te dompter. »
  
  7 Samson lui répondit : « Si on m’attachait avec cordes fraîches, qui ne soient pas encore sèches, je deviendrais faible et je serais pareil à un autre homme. »
  
  8 Les princes des Philistins apportèrent à Delila 7 cordes fraîches, qui n'étaient pas encore sèches. Elle l’attacha avec ces cordes.
  
  9 Or des hommes se tenaient en embuscade chez elle, dans une chambre. Elle dit à Samson : « Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! » Il cassa les cordes aussi facilement qu’un cordon de chanvre rongé par le feu, et l'on ne sut pas d'où venait sa force.
  
  10 Delila dit à Samson : « Tu t'es moqué de moi, tu m'as dit des mensonges. Maintenant, indique-moi donc avec quoi il faut t’attacher. »
  
  11 Il lui dit : « Si on m’attachait avec des cordes neuves, dont on ne se soit jamais servi, je deviendrais faible et je serais pareil à un autre homme. »
  
  12 Delila prit des cordes neuves, avec lesquelles elle l’attacha. Puis elle lui dit : « Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! » Or des hommes se tenaient en embuscade dans une chambre. Samson cassa comme un simple fil les cordes qu'il avait aux bras.
  
  13 Delila dit à Samson : « Jusqu'à maintenant tu t'es moqué de moi, tu m'as dit des mensonges. Indique-moi avec quoi il faut t’attacher. » Il lui dit : « Tu n'as qu'à tisser les 7 tresses de ma tête avec la chaîne d’un métier à tisser. »
  
  14 Elle les fixa au moyen d’une cheville. Puis elle lui dit : « Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! » Il se réveilla et arracha la cheville du métier à tisser ainsi que le tissu.
  
  15 Elle lui dit : « Comment peux-tu dire : ‘Je t'aime !’puisque ton cœur n'est pas avec moi ? Voilà 3 fois que tu t'es moqué de moi et tu ne m'as pas indiqué d'où vient ta grande force. »
  
  16 Comme elle était chaque jour à le harceler de paroles et à le pousser à bout, il perdit patience au point de désirer la mort.
  
  17 Il lui ouvrit tout son cœur et lui dit : « Le rasoir n'est pas passé sur ma tête parce que je suis consacré à Dieu depuis le ventre de ma mère. Si j'étais rasé, ma force m'abandonnerait, je deviendrais faible et je serais pareil à tout autre homme. »
  
  18 Voyant qu'il lui avait ouvert tout son cœur, Delila envoya appeler les princes des Philistins et leur fit dire : « Montez cette fois-ci, car il m'a ouvert tout son cœur. » Les princes des Philistins montèrent vers elle et apportèrent l'argent.
  
  19 Elle endormit Samson sur ses genoux. Puis, ayant appelé un homme, elle lui fit raser les 7 tresses de la tête de Samson et commença ainsi à le dompter. Il perdit sa force.
  
  20 Elle dit alors : « Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! » Il se réveilla et dit : « Je m'en tirerai comme les autres fois, je me dégagerai. » Il ne savait pas que l'Eternel s'était retiré de lui.
  
  21 Les Philistins s’emparèrent de lui et lui crevèrent les yeux. Ils le firent descendre à Gaza et l’attachèrent avec des chaînes en bronze. Il dut tourner la meule pour le blé dans la prison.
  
  22 Cependant les cheveux de Samson recommençaient à pousser, depuis le moment où il avait été rasé.
  
  23 Or les princes des Philistins se rassemblèrent pour offrir un grand sacrifice à Dagon, leur dieu, et pour se réjouir. Ils disaient : « Notre dieu a livré Samson, notre ennemi, entre nos mains. »
  
  24 En le voyant, les membres du peuple célébrèrent leur dieu en disant : « Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains notre ennemi, celui qui semait la dévastation dans notre pays et qui multipliait nos morts. »
  
  25 Dans leur joie, ils dirent : « Qu'on appelle Samson et qu'il nous amuse ! » On fit sortir Samson de la prison et il joua devant eux. Lorsqu’on le plaça entre les colonnes,
  
  26 Samson dit au jeune homme qui le tenait par la main : « Laisse-moi toucher les colonnes sur lesquelles repose la maison et m'appuyer contre elles. »
  
  27 La maison était remplie d'hommes et de femmes. Tous les princes des Philistins étaient là, et il y avait sur le toit environ 3000 personnes, hommes et femmes, qui regardaient Samson jouer.
  
  28 Alors Samson fit appel à l'Eternel en disant : « Seigneur Eternel, souviens-toi de moi, je t’en prie ! O Dieu, donne-moi de la force cette fois seulement, et que d'un seul coup je tire vengeance des Philistins pour mes deux yeux ! »
  
  29 Puis il attrapa les deux colonnes du milieu sur lesquelles reposait la maison et s'appuya contre elles. L'une était à sa droite, et l'autre à sa gauche.
  
  30 Samson dit : « Que je meure avec les Philistins ! » Il se pencha de toutes ses forces, et la maison tomba sur les princes et sur tout le peuple qui s’y trouvait. Ceux qu'il tua à sa mort furent plus nombreux que ceux qu'il avait tués pendant sa vie.
  
  31 Ses frères et toute la famille de son père descendirent et l'emportèrent. Lorsqu'ils furent remontés chez eux, ils l'enterrèrent entre Tsorea et Eshthaol dans le tombeau de son père Manoach. Il avait été juge en Israël pendant 20 ans.
