Pour le premier membre de ce verset, voir 17.5 ; pour le second, voir 19.17. La sagesse israélite, pour recommander la mansuétude à l'égard du pauvre, s'appuie sur l'identité d'origine de tous les hommes et sur le respect que mérite un être créé à l'image de Dieu (Job 31.15). Le dédain qu'on a pour un pauvre remonte jusqu'au Créateur.
