Proverbes 19.17

מַלְוֵ֣ה יְ֭הוָה ח֣וֹנֵֽן דָּ֑ל וּ֝גְמֻל֗וֹ יְשַׁלֶּם־לֽוֹ׃
Celui qui a pitié du pauvre prête à l'Éternel, Qui lui rendra selon son oeuvre.

Prête à l'Eternel. Ces mots sont en tête dans l'original : Il prête à l'Eternel, celui qui a pitié du misérable. Comparez 14.21. Dieu ne lui rendra pas seulement le capital ; il y ajoutera des intérêts.
Il fallait flatter notre avidité par la promesse d'un gain surabondant (saint Basile). Riches, si vous avez un pauvre débiteur, vous avez un riche garant (saint Augustin).
