Reconnaissez que c'est lui... qui est Dieu : non plus pour trembler d'épouvante (Psaumes 2.11 ; 46.11), mais pour accourir à lui avec joie, comme à celui qui vous donne tout, bien qu'il ait été longtemps pour vous un inconnu.

C'est lui qui nous a faits. On applique généralement ce nous au peuple d'Israël, ce peuple ferait comprendre à toute la terre qu'il doit à l'Eternel seul toutes les délivrances qui ont fait de lui un peuple aussi privilégié. Nous pensons plutôt qu'il s'agit ici, comme dans ce qui précède, de tous les hommes. Ce Dieu, que vous avez méconnu, c'est lui qui nous a tous faits. Les paroles suivantes : Nous sommes son peuple, concernent aussi, dans ce cas, tous les peuples, réunis maintenant sous la houlette d'un seul berger. L'humanité tout entière est ainsi élevée à la dignité conférée jusqu'ici à Israël seul (Jean 10.16). C'est ici une prophétie analogue à celle du Psaume 87.

Et non pas nous. Une autre leçon, qui fait l'effet d'une correction, donne le sens suivant : et nous sommes à lui. La leçon que nous conservons, bien qu'on l'ait taxée de non sens, réfute précisément la perpétuelle folie de l'homme, qui, de nos jours, comme il y a deux mille ans, prétend expliquer l'origine du monde et la sienne propre, en se passant du Dieu vivant.
