S'ils entrent dans mon repos : le repos de Canaan, après les angoisses d'Egypte et les fatigues du désert (Deutéronome 12.9). Le ton menaçant de cette dernière note du psaume laisse deviner aux lecteurs l'avertissement qu'ils ont à retirer de l'histoire de leurs pères. Après bien des siècles de séjour en Canaan, Israël peut perdre le repos dont il a joui et se rendre indigne du repos plus grand encore que doit inaugurer la venue du Messie. L'Epitre aux Hébreux parle, à propos de ce passage, du repos dont celui de Canaan, n'est que l'image et qui est, dans le plein sens du mot, le repos de Dieu, celui dans lequel Dieu vit (Hébreux 4.1-10). Le peuple de la nouvelle alliance y sera introduit lors de la seconde venue du Seigneur (2Thessaloniciens 1.7), mais dès maintenant le racheté en possède le gage par le fait de sa communion avec le Sauveur.

Ce psaume conserve donc toute sa signification pour l'Eglise chrétienne, qui attend la seconde venue du Seigneur, comme le peuple de l'ancienne alliance attendait la première. Il a une importance particulière pour notre époque, où tant de choses font pressentir que nous sommes à la veille de graves événements et que nous marchons à grands pas au-devant de l'avènement du Seigneur.
