J’aimerais à présent m’adresser en particulier aux Juifs parmi vous. Peut-être est-ce avec fierté que vous portez ce nom ; vous vous sentez tranquilles et en sécurité parce que vous possédez la loi ; vous vous faites une gloire de connaître le vrai Dieu et de le servir.

La construction de la phrase qui comprend les versets versets 17-24 est irrégulière : il n'y a pas de proposition principale qui réponde à la subordonnée introduite par : or, si.

D'après quelques interprètes, Paul aurait formulé cette proposition principale dans verset 21 et suivants, et l'aurait introduite par donc, en oubliant qu'il avait commencé la phrase par or, si.

Il nous semble plutôt que les versets versets 21-24 expriment encore les prémisses du raisonnement et que la conclusion est sous entendue après verset 24.

Cette conclusion, que Paul juge oiseux de formuler, est : "Tu seras condamné, au jour du jugement, aussi bien que le païen."

Les prémisses de la conclusion sont constituées par une double énumération, celle des privilèges dont se glorifie le Juif (versets 17-20) et celle des contrastes qu'il y a entre ses prétentions et sa conduite. (versets 21-24)

Ces versets versets 17-24 développent le principe énoncé à verset 13, dans son application spéciale aux Juifs.

A verset 17, Paul énumère les dons que le Juif a reçus : son nom glorieux de Juif ; la loi, signe manifeste de la faveur divine, sur laquelle il croit pouvoir se reposer ; Dieu enfin, dont il se glorifie, s'enorgueillissant dans la pensée que le Dieu qu'il invoque est le seul vrai Dieu.

"A la gradation des trois substantifs, Juif, loi, Dieu, correspond celle des trois verbes : se nommer, se reposer, se glorifier." (Godet).

L'apôtre consacre son discours aux Juifs : il expose leurs péchés et leur culpabilité, malgré leur profession de foi et leurs vaines prétentions. Une humble louange à Dieu, pleine de reconnaissance, est la racine et la plénitude de toute piété. Mais l'orgueil, la vantardise et la fausse louange du Seigneur, sont à la base de l’hypocrisie. La fierté spirituelle est ce qu’il y a de plus dangereux dans les différentes manifestations de l’orgueil.

Quand les soi-disant chrétiens ne vivent pas conformément au témoignage qu’ils professent, ils déshonorent le Seigneur et commettent un grand mal. Beaucoup méprisent à tort l’ignorance et la foi chétive de certaines personnes de leur entourage ; ils affichent cependant une certaine prétention quant à leur savoir, malgré le vide et le manque de puissance de leur vie spirituelle. Ils sont fiers d’annoncer l'Évangile, mais leur vie profane déshonore Dieu, si bien que Son Nom est finalement blasphémé...
