Grec : Si donc l'incirconcision observe...Et l'incirconcision par nature accomplissant la loi te jugera, toi le transgresseur de la loi avec (ou à travers) la lettre et la circoncision.

Paul emploie le terme abstrait l'incirconcision, au lieu de l'incirconcis, parce qu'il énonce un principe. Il ajoute : par nature, parce que l'incirconcision a son excuse dans le fait qu'elle est l'état naturel.

Le verbe au futur : te jugera, ne doit pas s'entendre du jugement dernier ; c'est un futur logique : s'il remplit la condition indiquée, l'incirconcis te jugera, c'est-àdire : en la remplissant, il affirmera sa supériorité morale, qui pourra recevoir sa confirmation éclatante au jour du jugement dernier. (comparez Matthieu 12.41,42)

La supposition que fait l'apôtre, de gentils qui, sans être circoncis, gardent les ordonnances de la loi, (comparez versets 14,15) a été réalisée par un Corneille (Actes 10) et d'autres pieux prosélytes, puis surtout par les païens convertis à l'Evangile, (verset 29) comparer : Philippiens 3.3,Matthieu 8.11,12.

C'est eux que l'apôtre a ici en vue, et non plus seulement, comme à verset 14, l'élite des gentils.

Le sens général de la pensée de l'apôtre est : la circoncision ou l'incirconcision, en ellesmêmes, ne sont rien ; l'obéissance aux commandements de Dieu est tout. (1Corinthiens 7.19 ; Galates 5.6)

L'homme s'obstine à placer l'essence de la religion dans les œuvres extérieures tous les enseignements de l'Ecriture le ramènent au dedans, à l'être plutôt qu'au faire, parce que le premier produit toujours le dernier, mais non l'inverse.
