Qu'est-ce à dire, en effet ? grec car quoi ?

- Si quelques-uns n'ont pas cru...L'acte d'incrédulité auquel il est fait allusion, ne peut être que le rejet du Messie Jésus, crucifié à la demande des Juifs ; c'est ce qui ressort du verbe au passé défini (aoriste) et de la mention, au verset 2, des "oracles de Dieu," dont les promesses messianiques étaient le contenu principal.

- "L'avantage" des Juifs aurait paru dans toute sa grandeur, s'ils avaient cru. Croire est l'indispensable condition pour recevoir toute grâce de Dieu ; c'est par la foi que l'homme s'approprie cette grâce. Mais leur incrédulité (Grec : leur infidélité) ne détruit point la fidélité de Dieu.

Dieu ne retire pas ses promesses, leur accomplissement final manifestera sa fidélité avec d'autant plus d'éclat. Les incrédules d'entre les Juifs se privent de la grâce, mais l'alliance de Dieu avec son peuple subsiste ; rien n'est changé de la part de Dieu.

Jésus met dans la bouche de son Père, à l'adresse des Israélites qui refusaient de se repentir, et qui étalent représentés par le fils allié de la parabole, ces mots : "Mon enfant, tu es toujours avec moi, et tout ce que j'ai est à toi." (Luc 15.31)

Et même après que le peuple élu eut crucifié le Messie, et qu'il eût affirmé son incrédulité en s'opposant à l'Evangile, son endurcissement n'était que partiel et momentané ; c'est ce que Paul donne à entendre, en désignant les Juifs qui n'ont pas cru par le mot : quelques-uns. Il veut insinuer que Dieu n'a pas rejeté son peuple comme tel, mais que ce peuple est destiné à rentrer un jour, d'une manière effective, dans l'alliance éternelle et indestructible de son Dieu. Cette pensée sera développée à Romains 11.
