World English Bible For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.

Ce verset explique et motive (en effet) la question posée au verset précédent. La tournure que Paul emploie trahit un certain embarras, causé par son respect pour celui que tout Israélite vénère.

C'est pourquoi il commence par supposer qu'Abraham a été justifié par ses œuvres. Si tel est le cas, il a sans doute sujet de se glorifier à cause de ce privilège exceptionnel et unique, mais devant les hommes seulement, et non devant Dieu, envers qui il n'a fait que remplir son strict devoir. (Luc 17.10)
