15 et 16 Pour dépeindre l'horreur de ce jour, Sophonie accumule les expressions les plus énergiques que possède la langue ; voir Esaïe 13.6-9 et surtout Joël 2.1-2, auquel ce morceau doit avoir été emprunté en grande partie.

Jour de fureur... Ces premiers mots ont inspiré le fameux chant de l'Eglise catholique connu sous le nom de Dies irae (traduction de la Vulgate).
