World English Bible At that time will I bring you in, and at that time will I gather you; for I will give you honor and praise among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says Yahweh.

Chez tous les peuples de la terre : Israël restauré sera l'objet de l'admiration du monde entier.

A vos yeux : quand cette délivrance aura lieu, ils auront beau ne pas y croire, ils devront pourtant se convaincre, de leurs propres yeux, qu'elle est réelle.

Conclusion

Sophonie, au temps de Josias, a encore devant lui l'empire de Ninive comme puissance dominante, mais il voit en esprit sa chute déjà consommée et son regard contemple un nouveau jugement qui va frapper la terre et envelopper Juda lui-même. Celui-ci, enivré par une prospérité passagère, se corrompt de plus en plus, et Sophonie ne voit plus d'autre perspective pour son salut que le jugement de destruction par lequel seul il peut être purifié et rendu à Dieu. Ce jugement se confond à ses yeux avec la catastrophe finale et universelle qui doit amener ici-bas l'établissement du règne de Dieu. Aussi accentue-t-il fortement l'idée du jour de l'Eternel, qui est la pensée fondamentale de son livre. Dans le tableau de ce jour se réunissent, comme dans la perspective prophétique en général et en particulier dans celle d'Esaïe, ces trois grandes intuitions :

  1. le châtiment du peuple de Dieu par les nations païennes ;
  2. le jugement de celles-ci par l'Eternel lui-même ;
  3. l'apparition d'un nouveau peuple de Dieu formé du reste sauvé soit des nations païennes, soit d'Israël même.

C'est dans ce dernier tableau que Sophonie déploie le mieux son originalité. Les lèvres des païens purifiées par l'adoration unique de l'Eternel, Israël, objet de l'amour silencieux de son Dieu : ces traits lui appartiennent en propre et révèlent toute la tendresse de son cœur. Ainsi se trouve présenté dans ces trois courts chapitres le rapide enchaînement des événements des derniers temps. Plus qu'aucun écrit prophétique, le livre de Sophonie peut être considéré comme le résumé de toute la prophétie des Hébreux.

Il ne manque à son tableau que la personne de Celui qui doit être l'instrument de Dieu pour la consommation de son plan. Cette omission étonne, après les prophéties d'Esaïe et de Michée ; mais ce fait prouve que chaque prophète ne donne que ce qui lui est communiqué en propre, et que, si quelqu'un d'entre eux fait des emprunts à ses devanciers, quant à la forme, cette imitation ne va pas jusqu'au fond même des choses. Mais le mot 3.17 : L'Eternel est au milieu de toi, un vaillant Sauveur, est significatif, et si Sophonie ne le développe pas davantage, c'est qu'il n'a rien reçu à ajouter aux révélations de ses devanciers sur ce sujet, et que la perspective du jugement, qu'il a mission de présenter comme inévitable, domine son intuition.
