Attendez-moi. Cette attente pourrait être celle du jugement ; dans ce cas, cette parole serait une menace. Mais le verbe hébreu est ordinairement employé pour désigner l'attente de la foi (Psaumes 33.20 ; Esaïe 64.3) ; et ce sens n'est pas impossible ici. L'Eternel invite les fidèles à persévérer dans la foi pendant que le jugement s'exercera, jusqu'au jour où se lèvera le salut (verset 9). Le jugement ne menace pas seulement Juda, mais toutes les nations. Ces paroles ont d'ailleurs une portée plus lointaine que 1.2-3. Le jugement qu'elles décrivent est celui qui préparera les derniers temps où, après avoir passé par un châtiment sévère, les nations arriveront à la connaissance du Dieu d'Israël. Ce n'est donc pas un jour d'anéantissement, mais un jour d'épuration des peuples, qu'annonce le prophète.

Pour le butin : Dieu est représenté comme un vainqueur pillant ses ennemis. On a appliqué quelquefois ce terme de butin aux élus que Dieu tirerait des nations châtiées pour être sa propriété, ses adorateurs.

Lorsque la vengeance contre la nation d'Israël sera accomplie, la venue de l'Évangile pourra alors s’opérer.

L’influence de purification de l'Évangile et le langage pur de la Grâce enseigneront l’humilité, la repentance et la foi, aux hommes.

Il est bon de trouver « pureté » et « piété » dans la conversation courante. L'état pur et heureux de l'Église, aux derniers jours, semble ici prévu. Le Seigneur éliminera toute vantardise et ne laissera rien qui offre aux hommes de quoi se vanter ; le Seigneur Jésus est la Sagesse et la Justice, Il offre aux repentants la sanctification et la Rédemption. Le repentir et les obligations spirituelles envers le Rédempteur rendront les véritables croyants honnêtes et sincères, quelle que soit leur piété !
