Zacharie 2.4

A ce jeune homme. C'est à tort que quelques-uns ont rapporté ces mots à Zacharie lui-même ; il s'agit de l'homme au cordeau ; le prophète est simple spectateur de toute cette scène. Peut-être quelques interprètes ne se sont-ils pas trompés en croyant que ce terme de jeune homme fait pressentir quelque précipitation dans l'acte que l'homme au cordeau se disposait à accomplir.

C'est comme ville ouverte. Ce message a évidemment pour but d'engager l'homme au cordeau à renoncer à son dessein de tracer l'enceinte future de Jérusalem et l'emplacement de ses remparts. Jérusalem est appelée à de si hautes destinées que rien ne doit mettre obstacle à son accroissement indéfini, et voilà pourquoi elle doit ressembler à une ville ouverte de tous côtés sur la campagne. Cet homme est donc la personnification de la pensée humaine, à laquelle se substitue expressément la pensée divine, exprimée par l'ange.
