Et moi je serai pour elle... C'est l'Eternel lui-même qui lui servira de rempart, et en même temps que sa protection sera pour elle comme une impénétrable muraille, sa présence au-dedans d'elle la fera resplendir de tout l'éclat des perfections divines (Esaïe 4.5 et suivants ; Apocalypse 21.23).

Ces paroles ne s'appliquent qu'imparfaitement à la Jérusalem qui fut rebâtie après l'exil. Les termes de la vision, surtout si nous y joignons les versets 10 à 12, débordent évidemment ce cadre si étroit. Sans doute, cette ville fut d'une manière remarquable, dans les siècles qui suivirent, l'objet de la protection divine ; elle échappa comme miraculeusement aux catastrophes qui atteignirent les peuples voisins. Elle parvint à un si haut degré de beauté et de prospérité qu'elle devint, au dire de Pline, de beaucoup la plus célèbre des villes de l'Orient ; mais c'est plus loin encore qu'il faut aller, si nous voulons contempler le plein accomplissement de ces promesses. La Jérusalem visible a eu ses fossés et ses remparts, qui en ont limité la longueur et la largeur ; tandis que le prophète annonce ici une Jérusalem sans limites extérieures. De telles paroles ne peuvent s'appliquer qu'à cette Jérusalem spirituelle sortie de la Jérusalem terrestre sous le nom d'Eglise du Christ et qui embrasse graduellement le monde entier, n'ayant d'autre protection que la souveraineté de son Chef et d'autre beauté que les merveilles de sa grâce accomplies au milieu d'elle.
